Chapter 49 - Northern Province

The sun had barely risen when Choolwe and Luyando began the long journey north.

The road stretched endlessly before them, cutting through villages, forests, and wide open plains. It was a journey Chumuka had almost made years earlier. Looking at the map on the passenger seat, Choolwe realized her mother had marked this very route with a red circle.

She stopped the car for a moment.

Lifting the notebook from the dashboard, she gently touched the page.

"So this is where you wanted to go, Mama."

Luyando smiled sadly.

"She always believed every answer was waiting somewhere."

Choolwe closed the notebook.

"Then we'll find it."

For hours they drove in silence.

The closer they came to the village listed in Joseph Banda's records, the more nervous Choolwe became.

She wasn't simply chasing a stranger anymore.

She was finishing her mother's final journey.

---

By late afternoon they arrived in the small village.

Unlike the busy towns they had passed, this place moved slowly.

Children played football on dusty roads.

Women carried water from a nearby stream.

Old men sat beneath enormous trees discussing the day's events.

Everyone seemed to know everyone.

Luyando approached an elderly shopkeeper.

"Excuse me," she asked politely.

"We're looking for the Banda family."

The old man smiled.

"There are many Bandas."

She unfolded the volunteer application.

"We're looking for the family of Joseph Banda."

The smile faded.

"Oh..."

"You know him?"

The old man nodded slowly.

"I knew him."

"Knew?"

"He passed away twelve years ago."

Both women froze.

Another lead...

Another person gone.

"I'm sorry," Choolwe whispered.

The old man pointed toward a modest brick house surrounded by flowering bushes.

"His older brother still lives there."

"He'll remember."

---

The house was quiet.

An elderly man opened the wooden gate before they even knocked.

His eyes immediately settled on the old photograph Choolwe was carrying.

"You've come because of Joseph."

It wasn't a question.

It was a statement.

"You know why we're here?" Choolwe asked.

The man nodded.

"My brother told me this day would come."

He invited them inside.

The sitting room walls were covered with family photographs.

One picture immediately caught Choolwe's attention.

Joseph.

Standing beside a young woman.

Holding a little girl who looked no older than three.

Her heart began pounding.

"Who is that child?"

The old man smiled gently.

"That little girl..."

"...changed my brother's life."

Luyando leaned forward.

"Is that Nalishuwa?"

The old man looked surprised.

"You know her name?"

Choolwe slowly nodded.

"My mother spent thirty years searching for her."

The man's expression softened.

"So..."

"You're Chumuka's daughter."

Neither Choolwe nor Luyando had mentioned Chumuka's name.

Yet somehow...

He already knew exactly who they were.

He stood silently for a moment before walking toward an old wooden cabinet.

From the highest shelf he removed a small tin box.

It was old.

Rust covered its edges.

He placed it carefully on the table.

"My brother left this with me."

"He said..."

The old man paused as emotion filled his voice.

"...'One day, a woman named Chumuka—or someone carrying her eyes—will come looking.'"

Choolwe felt tears welling up.

Joseph had remembered.

For all these years...

He had been waiting.

The old man gently opened the tin box.

Inside lay several letters.

A necklace.

A child's drawing.

And one sealed envelope.

Across the front were written six words that made Choolwe's hands tremble.

"For Chumuka... from Nalishuwa."

The room fell completely silent.

Thirty years after her disappearance...

Nalishuwa's voice was finally about to be heard.
