Chapter 3 - The Price of an Unknown Class

Morning came quietly.

Too quietly.

Kairo Vance opened his eyes slowly.

The ceiling above him looked the same as always.

But something inside him had changed.

He could feel it.

Like a second heartbeat… beneath his own.

His shadow stretched slightly on the floor.

And for a brief moment—

It moved on its own.

Kairo sat up.

"…Still here."

A faint flicker appeared in his vision.

[Relic Status: Ashborn Wraith – Bound]

Condition: Stable

Location: Host Shadow

Kairo exhaled slowly.

"So it wasn't a dream."

A low pulse of energy responded from his shadow.

Not words.

Just awareness.

He stood up and got ready for school.

🏫 THE SCHOOL

The atmosphere was different today.

Whispers filled the corridors the moment Kairo entered.

"…That's him."

"The guy with the unknown class…"

"I heard his crystal went dark…"

"Is he even human or what?"

Kairo walked through it all without reacting.

Same expression.

Same silence.

But now—

People were watching more carefully.

Not just mocking.

Observing.

He noticed it.

That shift.

Fear mixed with curiosity.

In the classroom, the teacher entered with a serious expression.

"Everyone, attention."

The room went quiet.

"The academy has requested a full evaluation session today."

Excitement immediately spread.

A student raised his hand.

"Sir, is this for ranking assessment?"

"Yes," the teacher replied.

Then his eyes shifted slightly.

"…And for special cases."

All eyes slowly moved to Kairo.

He didn't react.

But inside his shadow—

Something stirred.

⚡ EVALUATION HALL

The hall was large.

Circular.

Built for combat testing.

Students stood in groups, waiting for their turn.

Ranks were being recorded.

Some showed fire abilities.

Others summoned beasts.

Others enhanced their bodies.

Then—

It was Kairo's turn.

A silence fell over the hall.

Even instructors looked up.

"Unknown Class," one of them muttered.

"Let's see what that means."

Kairo stepped forward.

Calm.

Unbothered.

He entered the center of the arena.

A combat instructor stepped in opposite him.

Tall.

Built.

Confident.

"Don't worry," the instructor said lightly.

"This is just a basic evaluation. Show me anything you've got."

A few students laughed quietly.

Because everyone already knew—

He had nothing.

The instructor raised his hand.

"Begin."

⚔️ FIRST TEST

The instructor moved first.

Fast.

A blur of motion.

A basic strike aimed to knock Kairo out instantly.

Kairo didn't move.

At least… not at first.

The moment the strike came within range—

His shadow reacted.

A dark ripple spread beneath him.

WHOOM

The instructor's fist stopped mid-air.

Something invisible had caught it.

The instructor frowned.

"What—?"

Kairo's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…I didn't do that."

From his shadow—

A faint shape emerged for a split second.

A claw of darkness.

Then it vanished.

The instructor jumped back immediately.

The hall went silent.

"…What was that?" someone whispered.

Kairo finally looked at his hand.

So it wasn't just inside him.

It was… responding.

The instructor tightened his stance.

"Again."

This time, he moved seriously.

Faster.

Stronger.

Kairo stepped aside slightly.

But again—

The shadow moved first.

A sharp burst of darkness forced the instructor back.

He slid across the floor.

Shock appeared on his face.

"That power… isn't F-rank."

Murmurs exploded in the hall.

"He blocked that?"

"He didn't even move properly…"

"That shadow thing… what is it?"

Kairo frowned slightly.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

He hadn't commanded anything.

But his shadow… reacted on instinct.

Like it was protecting him.

⚠️ SYSTEM RESPONSE

A faint screen flickered in Kairo's vision.

[Warning]

Relic behavior is deviating from host control.

Kairo's eyes narrowed.

"…Deviating?"

[Additional Notice]

External observation detected.

He paused.

"…What?"

For a split second—

He felt it.

Not in the hall.

Not nearby.

Somewhere far away.

Something was watching him.

👁️ THE WATCHER

On top of the academy building—

A man stood silently.

His face hidden beneath a coat.

He watched the arena through a small device.

"…Interesting."

Behind him, another voice spoke.

"Sir, should we report this?"

The man smiled faintly.

"No."

He lowered the device.

"Mark him."

"He might be one of them."

⚡ BACK IN THE HALL

The instructor raised his hand slowly.

"…This test is over."

Confusion spread instantly.

"Over?"

"But we didn't see his ability!"

"What was that shadow thing?"

Kairo turned slightly.

Still calm.

But now—

Even the instructors weren't sure what they had seen.

As he walked out of the arena—

His shadow moved once more.

Just slightly.

Almost like it was awake.

And somewhere far away—

Something else began to respond.
