Chapter 44 - Bonds That Refuse to Break

The estate was quieter at night.

Not empty.

Just… restrained.

Like even the walls had learned when not to speak.

Adrian stood in the inner courtyard alone for a moment, hands in his pockets, staring up at the sky that never seemed as simple as it used to.

Behind him, footsteps approached.

He didn't turn.

He already knew who it was.

Selene.

Then Lirael.

Then Niamh.

They stopped a few steps away, not surrounding him, not crowding him—just present in a way that felt intentional.

Adrian exhaled slowly. "…You all came."

Selene spoke first, voice calm. "We felt the pull."

Lirael crossed her arms slightly. "It is stronger tonight."

Niamh tilted her head. "Something in you is stabilizing."

Adrian frowned slightly. "That sounds like I'm malfunctioning."

Selene shook her head. "No."

A pause.

"You are evolving your resonance bond."

Silence.

Adrian glanced at her. "My what now?"

Lirael stepped forward slightly. "The connection between you and us is not static."

Niamh added softly. "It responds to your presence. Your state. Your awareness."

Adrian sighed. "…Everything in my life responds to me. I'm starting to notice a pattern."

Selene looked at him directly.

"This is different," she said.

A pause.

"It is not reaction."

"It is synchronization."

Silence settled.

Adrian rubbed the back of his neck. "…So what does that mean in normal words?"

Lirael answered.

"It means the bond is deepening without forcing."

Niamh's voice softened. "It is becoming more stable."

Selene added quietly.

"And more complete."

Adrian exhaled slowly. "…That sounds like a problem waiting to happen."

Lirael shook her head. "Not a problem."

"A consequence," Selene corrected.

Adrian looked between them. "…I'm guessing I didn't ask for this either."

Niamh smiled faintly. "No one asks for resonance bonds."

A pause.

"They happen when existence aligns."

Silence.

Adrian looked away for a moment.

"…Great," he muttered. "Even relationships in my life come with cosmic disclaimers."

That earned a faint reaction from Lirael.

Almost a smile.

Almost.

Selene stepped closer slightly.

"You are distracted," she said.

Adrian blinked. "…I am?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"From yourself."

Silence.

That landed differently.

Adrian sighed. "I've got a lot going on."

Lirael's tone softened slightly. "That is not the same as being present."

Niamh nodded. "You are always reacting. Never settling."

Adrian frowned slightly. "…Settling sounds dangerous in my situation."

Selene shook her head again.

"Not settling into weakness," she said.

"Settling into connection."

Silence.

Adrian didn't respond immediately.

For once, he just stood there.

Thinking.

Then he exhaled slowly.

"…Alright," he said quietly.

"Then what do I do?"

Lirael stepped closer.

"You stop treating the bond like a side effect," she said.

Niamh added softly.

"And acknowledge it as part of your strength."

Selene looked at him steadily.

"And part of your identity."

Silence.

Adrian glanced at each of them again.

Then shrugged faintly.

"…You make it sound easy," he said.

Selene answered immediately.

"It is not easy."

A pause.

"But it is necessary."

Adrian gave a small, tired smile.

"…Everything is necessary lately," he muttered.

Then he looked at them more seriously.

"So what changes?"

Silence.

Selene answered first.

"You will feel us more clearly."

Lirael followed.

"And we will feel you."

Niamh added softly.

"Even when distance grows."

Adrian exhaled.

"…That sounds like no privacy at all."

Selene shook her head.

"It is not invasion."

"It is alignment."

Silence.

Adrian looked at the night sky again.

Then slowly nodded.

"…Fine," he said quietly.

"I'll try not to fight it."

Lirael studied him for a moment.

Then spoke.

"You always say that before you adapt."

Adrian glanced at her. "…Is that a complaint?"

"No," she replied.

"It is observation."

Niamh stepped slightly closer.

Then gently placed her hand near his—close, but not forcing contact.

Selene did the same on the other side.

Lirael followed after a moment.

A subtle formation.

Not binding.

Not ritual.

Just presence aligning around him.

Adrian felt it immediately.

Not pressure.

Not control.

Warmth… structured into awareness.

He exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah," he muttered.

"That's different."

Selene's voice softened.

"It is you," she said.

A pause.

"But more complete."

Silence lingered again.

Not heavy this time.

Just steady.

And for once—

Adrian didn't feel like the world was watching to define him.

He felt like something inside it was finally choosing to stand with him.
