Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: The Day I Stopped Caring

The laughter started quietly.

At first, Kai didn't think much of it. Just background noise—people talking, joking, living their lives.

Then he realized… they were looking at him.

No—at them.

He stood in the middle of the courtyard, stiff, confused, while a small crowd formed around him. Some people whispered. Others didn't even bother hiding their smiles.

And right in front of him stood the one person he never expected to face like this.

"I think we should end things."

Her voice was calm. Too calm.

Kai blinked, like he didn't hear her properly. "What do you mean?"

She didn't hesitate. "I don't see a future with you anymore."

The words hung in the air.

Simple. Clean. Final.

For a moment, everything around him felt distant, like the world had taken a step back.

"Is this a joke?" he asked, forcing a small laugh that didn't feel real.

She shook her head. "I'm serious."

That was when he noticed them—her friends, standing just behind her. Watching. Waiting. Like they already knew how this would go.

Like this was something they had talked about.

Something planned.

Kai's chest tightened. "After everything… this is how you say it?"

A few people nearby snickered.

"You chose to do those things," she replied, folding her arms. "I never forced you."

That one hurt more than he expected.

Not because it was loud.

But because it was true.

He remembered all the late nights, the sacrifices, the times he put her first without thinking twice. Back then, it felt right. It felt like love.

Now… it just felt stupid.

"You're too comfortable," she continued. "No ambition. No direction. I can't keep waiting for you to figure yourself out."

Each word chipped away at something inside him.

"I thought we were building something," he said quietly.

She sighed, like she was tired of explaining. "I already am. Just not with you."

The crowd reacted—some shocked, some entertained.

Kai stood there, not knowing what to say anymore.

This wasn't how he imagined things ending.

Not here. Not like this.

Not in front of everyone.

For a second, he wanted to argue. To defend himself. To say something—anything—to make this less humiliating.

But nothing came out.

Just silence.

Then—

something shifted.

Not outside.

Inside him.

Like a thread that had been pulled too tight finally snapped.

[Condition met.]

Kai's eyes twitched slightly.

A voice echoed in his mind—cold, emotionless.

[Emotional threshold reached.]

[Initializing Detachment System…]

"…What is that?"

He frowned, glancing around. No one reacted. No one else heard it.

[System successfully activated.]

A strange calm washed over him.

The tight feeling in his chest loosened.

The noise around him faded.

Even her voice… didn't hit the same anymore.

It was like someone had turned the volume of his emotions down.

[Objective: Reduce emotional dependency.]

[Reward: +10 Mental Clarity.]

Kai took a slow breath.

And for the first time since she started talking…

he wasn't overwhelmed.

He looked at her again.

Really looked.

And something felt… different.

The attachment. The urgency. The need to hold on.

Gone.

"…Okay," he said.

Just one word.

But it cut through everything.

She frowned. "That's all you have to say?"

Kai shrugged slightly.

No anger. No desperation.

Just… acceptance.

Or maybe something else.

Behind her, someone whispered, "That's it?"

"No begging?" another said.

Kai didn't respond.

Didn't look at them.

Didn't care.

He turned and started walking away.

Each step felt lighter than the last.

[Emotional tie weakened.]

[Reward granted: +10 Mental Clarity.]

His thoughts sharpened instantly.

Everything felt clearer.

Simpler.

Behind him, his name was called.

Once.

Twice.

He didn't stop.

Didn't turn around.

And strangely…

he didn't feel like he needed to.

For the first time in a long time—

Kai felt free.
