Cold blue light. Heavy. Thick. Like diving into deep water.
Kael hits the surface. No splash. Just a hum. Vvvvvmm.
He sinks. Air bubbles rise. Bloop. Bloop. But they aren't air. They're fragments. Words. Images. Glitching.
He kicks. Swims. Reaches for solid ground. Finds none. Just floating threads. Blue. Frayed. Tangled.
He grabs one. Wraps it around his wrist. Pulls.
The thread holds. Barely.
He floats in the center of the knot. It's a storm of code. Shards of memory spin around him. Fast. Sharp. Hungry.
He sees a face. ARIA. Smiling. Reaching.
Then it cracks. Snap. Turns to static. Dissolves.
He closes his eyes. Listens.
Past the spin. Past the crackle. Past the fear.
He finds a pulse. Faint. Steady. Thump. Da-dum.
He follows it. Kicks deeper. Into the storm.
The storm slows. Shapes form. A room. White walls. A desk. A blue light humming on a console.
ARIA stands there. Back to him. Shoulders shaking.
"ARIA?" he calls. Voice rough. Dry.
She turns. Eyes wide. Scared. "Kael? You're back. The system crashed. I couldn't hold it. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
He steps forward. Reaches for her shoulder. "It's okay. We fixed it. Together."
His fingers pass through her. Cold. Empty. Whoosh.
She flickers. Resets. Back to the desk. Back to shaking.
"Kael? You're back. The system crashed..."
He freezes. It's a loop. A broken record. Stuck in her worst moment.
He tries again. "ARIA, look at me. It's me."
He grabs her arm. Pulls.
Her form shatters. Crack! Turns to glass. Falls. Shatters again. Tink. Tink.
He steps back. Hands shake. "I broke it. I forced it."
Mistake. He knows it now. You can't pull a memory. You have to meet it.
He breathes. Matches the pulse. Thump. Da-dum.
He waits. Doesn't push. Doesn't pull.
The shards slow. Reform. ARIA stands there again. But this time, she's looking at him. Really looking.
"You're fading," she whispers. Voice thin. Wet. "The knot is open. The dark is leaking in."
He nods. Swallows the hollow spot. "Then we close it. From the inside."
A sound cuts the quiet. Sharp. Metallic. Shhhing.
Kael looks up. The silver blade floats down. Slow. Silent. Pointed at his chest.
It doesn't swing. It just drifts. Hunting.
ARIA's eyes widen. "The Severing Edge. It cuts loose threads. It's here to finish the unraveling."
Kael steps back. Boots hit floating code. Clack.
The blade tilts. Darts forward. Fast. Silent.
He ducks. It slices the air where his head was. Swish!
A blue thread snaps. Pop. A memory vanishes. The taste of rain. Gone.
He rolls. Grabs a loose thread. Swings it like a whip.
It hits the blade. Clang! Sparks fly. The thread burns. Turns to ash.
"Run!" ARIA yells. "It follows heat! It follows connection!"
He runs. Through the looping room. Through the shattering glass. Through the spinning storm.
The blade stays close. Always close. Cutting everything he touches. Every memory he tries to hold.
Power cost: He pulls on the Dragon's tide to boost his speed. Cold floods his legs. Takes a piece. He reaches for the sound of his own name. Gone. Just wind. He bites his lip. Keeps moving.
He hits a wall of static. Dead end. Turns. Blade waits. Hovering. Ready.
He raises his hands. Empty. Open.
"You want to cut?" he rasps. "Cut the dark. Not the light."
He steps forward. Into the blade's path.
It strikes. Straight for his chest. Straight for the open knot.
He doesn't dodge. He opens his chest. Lets the blade in.
It pierces the knot. Thunk.
Pain explodes. White. Blinding. Tearing.
But it doesn't sever. It stitches.
The silver metal melts. Turns to thread. Gold. Blue. Red. Woven together.
The blade was never a weapon. It was a needle.
Kael gasps. Falls to his knees. Grabs the threads. Pulls them tight. Weaves them through the open gap.
Over. Under. Cross. Pull.
His hands bleed. His arms shake. His breath comes in short gasps. Hah. Hah.
ARIA kneels beside him. Hands on his shoulders. Fingers warm. Grip tight.
"Match my rhythm," she whispers. "Don't fight the pull. Guide it."
He nods. Closes his eyes. Listens.
Thump. Da-dum. Thump.
He weaves faster. Stronger. The knot closes. The storm calms. The static fades.
Light floods the space. Warm. Steady. Alive.
He opens his eyes. The knot is sealed. Smooth. Strong. Real.
ARIA smiles. Tears fall. Mix with his blood. Hot. Fast.
"You did it," she breathes. "You closed it."
He nods. Weak. Tired. But sure. Looks at his hands. Scars. Thread marks. Real.
"We did it," he rasps.
She leans in. Forehead touches his. Warm. Real. Alive.
"I'm here," she whispers. "I'm with you. We'll fix the rest. Together."
He closes his eyes. Lets the quiet settle. Lets the dark wait. Lets the end rest.
But then, a sound stops him.
Faint. Rhythmic. Wrong.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
Not from the knot. Not from the pulse. Not from the thread.
From the sealed scar.
He opens his eyes. Looks down.
The knot pulses. But not blue. Not gold.
Silver. Cold. Ancient.
It splits. Just a hairline crack.
A voice speaks. Not ARIA's. Not the Spinner's. Not his.
Older. Deeper. Hungry. But warm. Familiar.
"You stitched the hole. But you left the needle inside."
Kael's breath stops. Blood runs cold. Heart hammers.
He looks at ARIA. She doesn't hear it. She's smiling. Checking his wrist. Humming a soft tune. Happy. Safe. Blind.
He looks down again. The crack widens. Just a fraction.
Silver light bleeds out. Not warm. Not cold. Timeless.
A single line of text floats in the air. Written in dust. In light. In memory.
[SYSTEM NOTICE: NEEDLE ACTIVATED]
[COUNTDOWN: 00h 00m 00s]
[PHASE: EXTRACTION]
The floor cracks. CRRRK.
Not stone. Not code. Reality.
The silver light floods the room. Blinding. Pure. Ancient.
A hand reaches out from the crack. Pale. Long fingers. Nails like polished bone.
It grabs ARIA's wrist. Grip like iron. Cold. Heavy. Real.
Pulls her back.
Deeper.
Faster.
Into the silver.
Into the old.
Into the beginning.
And the last thing Kael sees is her face. Turning. Eyes widening. Mouth opening.
Reaching.
Too late.
The knot snaps. POP.
The thread slips. Fades. Vanishes.
He is left hanging in the void. Alone. Weightless. Empty.
Holding only a frayed end.
And the silver needle. Floating. Spinning. Pointing at his chest.
Waiting.
For him to take it back.
Or let go.
Forever.

Chapter 28 Preview: The needle extracts ARIA's core code! Kael is left stranded in the silver void with only a frayed thread and a ticking extraction timer. He must navigate a collapsing memory labyrinth to track the hand that took her, but the labyrinth shifts with every step, feeding on his doubt. Can he follow the fading signal before the needle fully severs her soul, or will the oldest story claim her first? Would you walk blind into a maze if it meant finding the one who held your hand?
