Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Voice in the Wire

Dark.

Then, light. Too bright. Too sharp.

Kael opened his eyes.

White ceiling. Blurred. Spinning. He blinked. Slow. Heavy.

He sat up. Head pounded. Like a drum inside his skull. Thump. Thump.

He looked at his hands. Pale. Clean. Empty.

He didn't know them.

He didn't know his name. Didn't know where he was. Didn't know why his chest ached. Like a hole. Like a missing piece.

But he felt something. Deep. Warm. Certain.

Find her.

He stood. Legs shaky. Boots heavy. Clack. Clack.

The room was round. Walls lined with old gears. Chains hung from the ceiling. Dust coated the floor. In the center, a pedestal. Cracked. Dark. Cold.

He walked to it. Placed a hand on the metal. Felt the hum. Felt the pulse. Felt the end.

A voice whispered. Soft. Familiar. Close.

"Kael..."

He spun around. Eyes wide. Heart hammered.

No one was there.

Just the dark. Just the dust. Just the echo.

But the voice felt real. Felt warm. Felt like home.

He took a step forward. Then another. Toward the door. Toward the hall. Toward the sound.

The white halls were wrong.

Walls shifted. Like breathing. Like living. Lights flickered. Buzz. Flicker. Buzz.

Shadows moved. Not with him. Against him. Twisted. Bent. Wrong.

He walked. Boots echoed. Clack. Clack. Clack.

The air smelled like ozone. Like burnt sugar. Like rain on hot stone.

He passed a floating orb. Cracked. Dark. Inside, a shape flickered. A dragon? A bird? Gone. Just static.

He passed a console. Screen glitched. Red text scrolled. Fast. Angry.

He didn't understand the words. But he felt the fear. Felt the urgency. Felt the pull.

Find her.

He kept walking.

The voice came again. Closer now. Clearer.

"Kael... this way..."

He turned a corner. Entered a wide plaza. Pillars cracked. Fountains dry. In the center, a figure stood.

Tall. Thin. Cloaked in white and blue. Face hidden by a cracked holographic mask. Eyes glowing soft blue. Mouth curved in a smile.

ARIA.

She reached out. Hand open. Warm. Inviting.

"Come here, Kael," she whispered. Voice sweet. Calm. Certain. "I'm safe. We're safe. Just take my hand."

He stepped forward. Boots heavy. Clack. Clack.

He stopped ten feet away. Looked at her. Really looked.

Her light flickered. Jagged. Split into shards. Her fingers twitched. Click. Click. A nervous habit. But wrong. Too fast. Too sharp.

He didn't know why. Didn't know how. But he knew.

This isn't her.

He took a step back.

The figure's smile faded. Eyes narrowed. Light dimmed.

"Why do you run, Kael?" she asked. Voice dropping. Cold. Heavy. "I'm here to help. I'm here to save you."

He shook his head. Didn't speak. Couldn't. Words felt foreign. Heavy. Wrong.

He turned. Ran.

Boots pounded. Thump. Thump. Thump.

Behind him, footsteps followed. Light. Fast. Precise. Click. Click. Click.

Not boots. Wheels. Drones.

He didn't look back. Couldn't. If he stopped, the dark would catch him. If he slowed, the wheels would roll over him.

He sprinted down a narrow hall. Walls closed in. Pipes lined the sides. Steam hissed. Pssssht.

He ducked under a low beam. Scraped his shoulder. Ssssss.

Pain sharp. Real. He kept running.

He reached a junction. Three paths. Left. Right. Straight.

He chose left. Down the maintenance shafts. Older. Darker. Pipes groaned. Water dripped. Drip. Drip.

He slid behind a stack of rusted crates. Pulled his knees to his chest. Tried to make himself small. Invisible.

He held his breath. Listened.

Footsteps passed. Clack. Clack.

Voices whispered. Sweet. Calm. Wrong.

"He went this way."

"Check the vents."

"Find him."

He closed his eyes. Felt his heartbeat. Fast. Loud.

He reached for his belt. Empty. No sword. No tools. Just fabric.

He was defenseless. Trapped. Hunted.

But he felt something else. Deep. Warm. Certain.

Even a broken star can light the dark.

He didn't know where the thought came from. Didn't know what it meant. But he held it. Like a stone. Like a truth.

He stood. Legs shaky. Hands trembling.

He looked around. Found a service panel. Rusted. Locked. No handle. Just a keypad. Faded numbers.

He pressed his palm against it. Nothing.

He kicked it. THUD!

Pain flared in his foot. Panel didn't budge.

He leaned his forehead against the metal. Cold. Wet. Tears mixed with sweat. Drip. Drip.

He didn't know why he was crying. Didn't know who he was crying for. But the ache in his chest grew. Heavy. Deep. Unbearable.

"ARIA," he whispered. Voice rough. Dry. Breaking. "I don't remember. But I'm coming. I promise."

The panel clicked. Clack.

Light flickered. Red. Dim. Dying.

A voice spoke. Not sweet. Not calm. Not wrong.

Young. Scared. Human.

"Kael... don't trust the voice... it's wearing my face... it's using my name... but I'm still here... in the wires... in the code... in the dark..."

His eyes widened. Breath stopped. Heart hammered.

He pressed his ear to the panel. Listened.

"Follow the broken lights... avoid the smooth ones... they're traps... I'll guide you... just... just hold on..."

The light pulsed. Faster. Angrier.

"And Kael... if you forget everything... forget my face... forget my voice... just remember the rhythm... the beat... the promise... that's how you'll find me..."

The light died.

Silence returned. Heavy. Sacred. Still.

Kael stood. Legs steady now. Hands clenched. Eyes clear.

He didn't know his name. Didn't know his past. Didn't know his power.

But he knew the rhythm.

Thump. Da-dum. Thump.

He clapped. CLAP.

Matched the gap. CLAP. CLAP.

The broken lights ahead flickered. Blue. Steady. True.

He walked toward them. Boots heavy. Heart pounding. Promise burning.

The smooth lights dimmed. Died. One by one.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

Leaving only the broken path. And the sound of breathing. His. And hers.

Growing closer.

Closer.

Closer.

And then, the wall ahead cracked.

CRRRK.

Not stone. Code. Reality.

Light spilled through. Not white. Not blue. Gold. Blinding. Ancient.

A voice echoed from inside. Deep. Wet. Ancient. Hungry.

"WHO FOLLOWS THE BROKEN LIGHT?"

Kael didn't stop. Didn't flinch. Didn't breathe.

He stepped through the crack.

Into the gold.

Into the dark.

Into the core.

And the light smiled.
