Chapter 6 - Promise

It had been two weeks since Mark agreed to marry Sara, but he had not asked to meet her even once, and that made Sara worried.

Meanwhile, Caden constantly asked Lilly to meet him. They looked like a couple in love, while hers felt more like an arranged marriage.

Sara wanted to confirm whether Mark truly wanted to marry her or not.

Even today passed the same way. In the next few days, Caden came with his mother to decide the wedding date. He looked like a man deeply in love with Lilly, but when it came to Mark, there was no clue what he was thinking. He hadn't even called her once.

Sara stood alone on the balcony, staring blankly outside, when Aunt Raven suddenly suggested,

"Why don't we hold both weddings together?"

Hearing about a wedding with Mark immediately caught Sara's attention.

"Sara, what do you think about marrying on the same day as Lilly?" Aunt Raven asked.

Sara smiled weakly. "You should ask Mark that."

"I'll call them now," Aunt Raven said.

She called Mark's mother while Sara listened nervously.

"Hello, Mrs. Wilkinson," Aunt Raven said.

"Yes, Mrs. Long," Mark's mother replied.

"We are thinking about the wedding date. Have you decided on one yet?"

"Not yet. What about you?"

"We are thinking about the end of this month."

"I'll ask Mark," Mrs. Wilkinson replied.

After a pause, Aunt Raven added, "We are also thinking of holding both sisters' weddings on the same day, if you are okay with it."

Mrs. Wilkinson replied after a moment, "Alright. We will come to your house this evening."

"Okay," Aunt Raven said before ending the call.

Hearing this made Sara a little excited. Mark would come today, and she could finally talk to him.

Lilly, who was sitting with Caden, also heard the news that Mark was coming. She suddenly became nervous.

Everyone waited for Mark and his mother to arrive, while the family stayed busy discussing wedding decorations and the venue.

At the same time, Mark and his mother prepared to visit Sara's house.

Inside the car, his mother kept glancing at him. Even though he had agreed to the marriage and the wedding date, he still didn't look happy.

Out of curiosity, she finally asked,

"If you didn't want to marry this early, you shouldn't have agreed when they asked."

"The earlier, the better," Mark replied quietly.

His answer only worried her more.

"Then why don't you look happy?" she asked.

"Mom, I'm fine," he said, forcing a small smile.

Mark entered Lilly's house—not in the way he had once imagined, but as the man discussing her sister's wedding.

The moment he stepped inside, he saw Lilly sitting beside Caden.

He ignored everyone else.

He sat down beside his mother while Sara brought snacks for them.

Everyone became busy discussing the wedding date, but Sara could only look at Mark.

He doesn't even look at me, she thought. Then why did he agree to marry me?

In the end, the wedding date was fixed for the end of this month, but Sara still didn't get a chance to speak with him.

Sara's mother insisted everyone stay for dinner.

This time, Sara made sure to sit beside Mark, but even then, he barely spoke a word to her.

The disappointment on Sara's face was obvious to Lilly.

Seeing this made Lilly anxious. She decided she would talk to Mark after dinner.

At the table, Caden stayed busy taking care of Lilly, remembering her likes and dislikes. Meanwhile, both future mothers-in-law talked happily together like real sisters, while Sara's mother and Aunt Raven fussed over their future sons-in-law.

After a while, Sara's father returned home from work and joined them.

"I'm not happy that both my daughters will leave this house on the same day," he said softly.

"Uncle, I'm happy we are marrying on the same day," Caden replied cheerfully.

"You're only happy because you're marrying Lilly," Lilly teased.

"Yes," Caden admitted shamelessly, "but I was also thinking… why don't we go on our honeymoon together?"

Lilly immediately started coughing after hearing that.

In panic, both Caden and Mark grabbed glasses of water at the same time and reached toward her.

But Lilly accepted the glass from Caden.

"Thank you," she said softly to both of them.

Mark silently placed his glass back down.

Sara noticed this and thought, Even if he doesn't talk much, at least he cares about people.

After dinner, Lilly sent Mark a message asking him to come to the backyard.

Everyone else stayed busy talking about wedding preparations while Mark quietly stepped outside.

"Why did you call me here?" Mark asked.

"Can I request one more thing from you?" Lilly said softly.

"What do you want now? Is there still something left?" Mark replied bitterly.

"I know you're angry, and you have every right to be… but can you promise me that you'll always take care of Sara?"

"So you called me here for this?" Mark asked in disappointment.

"Please. Just this one thing. I'll never ask you for anything again."

"I already told you I'll marry her for your happiness, but I can't love her. She'll have to bear that."

"Please, Mark," Lilly pleaded.

"I will never hurt her. That's the only promise I can make."

After saying that, Mark walked away.

Lilly returned inside, but Mark remained standing alone outside.

A few moments later, Sara came looking for him.

"Why are you standing out here alone?" she asked hesitantly.

Mark panicked slightly. "Nothing."

He immediately started walking back toward the house.

Leaving Sara behind, she finally asked,

"Do you want to marry me?"

Mark stopped walking.

"Yes," he answered softly.

Sara stepped closer. "Then why don't you seem interested in our wedding?"

"You don't need to worry. I want to marry you."

"Then why won't you even look at me?"

Mark finally turned to face her.

"I'm not good at talking," he said quietly.

"I'm asking seriously. Is someone forcing you to marry me?"

Mark looked nervous for a moment before replying,

"I'll take care of you. Don't think too much."

"Okay," Sara said softly. "I just wanted to confirm."

No one expected the days to pass so quickly with all the wedding preparations.

Sara waited every day, hoping Mark would ask her out at least once, but he never did.

Still, because he had assured her that marrying her was his own choice, she felt relieved.

Finally, the wedding day arrived.

Lilly and Sara sat together in a room crowded with people while getting ready.

Caden kept messaging Lilly every few minutes as if he could no longer wait.

"Mark didn't even meet me once, and now we're directly getting married," Sara complained while getting ready.

"Aren't you the one eager to marry him?" her mother teased.

"Even Lilly met Caden so many times, and here I am," Sara muttered lightly.

Lilly, who was getting ready beside her, looked at Sara worriedly.

"Do you want to run away from the marriage?" her mother joked.

"No, Mom," Sara replied immediately.

Then their father entered the room.

"Girls, hurry up. The grooms have already arrived. They're waiting on the stage."

"Yes, Dad," Sara replied.

"Yes, Uncle," Lilly said.

The two girls stood up and looked at each other in their wedding dresses.

"Sara, take care of yourself. And if you ever have any problems, promise me you'll tell me," Lilly said while hugging her.

"Why are you acting like I'm going to war?" Sara laughed.

Lilly continued staring at her seriously.

"Okay, okay, I will. Now stop looking at me like that," Sara replied.

They looked at each other one last time before standing beside Sara's father.

Outside, the host enthusiastically announced the wedding ceremony, while inside, both girls stood nervously, waiting to walk out.
