Chapter 7 - Chapter 6: Laughter in the Raven's Claws

# Chapter 6: Laughter in the Raven's Claws

The dungeons of Onigashima — carved into the petrified demon's skull — smelled of rust, ammonia, and fear. Down here, in the deepest cavern, where the walls were slicked with a greasy film, time had stopped. The only sounds in the silence were the slow, heavy rhythm of breathing and a quiet, broken weeping that rang like shattered crystal.

Yuno hung from chains of sea-prism stone driven directly into the cavern's ceiling. His once-immaculate Golden Dawn mantle had been reduced to filthy rags, and his golden eyes had gone dull, veiled by a fog of exhaustion. The sea-prism stone worked on him like poison — it didn't merely block his mana, it drained the very essence of his existence as a mage. Each time Yuno tried to summon even the smallest gust of wind, the chains flared with cold blue light and a convulsion tore through his body, squeezing his muscles to the point of tearing.

Beside his head, locked inside a tiny cage made of the same stone, Sylph threw herself from wall to wall. The Wind Spirit looked translucent — almost without substance. Her wings were pinned against her body, and her tiny fists beat uselessly against the bars.

"Yuno… please… don't give up…" she whispered, her voice trembling with a terror she had never known in the world of Clover. "They're… they're not people. There's no mana in them… only darkness and cold."

Yuno didn't answer. He stared into the void in front of him, replaying the moment King had knocked him out of the sky. One sweep of a wing — and everything he had worked toward for years, all of his four-leaf clover magic, had crumbled like dry leaves. He, the genius of his generation, had been brought down by a creature that didn't even use a grimoire.

Then, without warning, the silence shattered — a bright, cheerful blast of trumpets, followed by the thunder of heavy footsteps. The cavern doors burst open, and Queen came dancing through them, moving to music only he could hear. His massive body in its striped jumpsuit took up nearly the entire width of the corridor, and his mechanical arm sparked as it beat out a rhythm against his metal belly.

"Funk! Oh-h-h-h, yeah! Good morning, little bird!" Queen roared, planting himself directly in front of Yuno. "How do you like your accommodations? Five stars, personalized service, all-inclusive package of pain and despair!"

Queen narrowed his eyes, studying Yuno through the thick lenses of his glasses.

"You know why you're still alive, kid? King wanted to snap your neck right then and there — I talked him out of it. A mage with a fuel reserve like yours is a rare find. That four-leaf clover of yours is a perfect vessel. It'd be a shame to let it go to waste."

Queen reached into his coat and produced a fruit. It was a deep, near-black shade of blue, covered in spiral patterns that seemed to shift and writhe on their own. The fruit radiated an aura of such wild, animal power that Sylph shrieked from inside her cage and pressed herself into the farthest corner.

"The Blue Raven SMILE," Queen announced with great ceremony, holding the fruit up right before Yuno's face. "My finest masterpiece. It was unstable back in Wano, but here — fed on your *pure* mana — it will become something beyond reckoning. Eat."

"Go to hell," Yuno rasped, forcing his head up. For just a moment, his old pride flared in his eyes. "I'm… a Magic Knight. I will never… be your pet."

Queen stopped dancing. His face went cold and hard in an instant, revealing the true nature of a Disaster.

"A Magic Knight?" he said. "Kid, your kingdom doesn't exist anymore. There's only Kaido's territory. And you either serve him, or you become fertilizer for my gardens."

Queen seized Yuno's jaw with his mechanical hand. A menacing crack — metal biting into flesh, leaving no room for resistance.

"Feed him!" Queen ordered the Gifted who stepped forward.

Yuno tried to clench his teeth, but the grip was such that his bones began to shift. The blue fruit was forced down his throat. The taste was revolting — rotted meat mixed with bitter bile and the flavor of burning rubber. Yuno gagged and tried to spit the pieces out, but Queen simply covered his mouth until he had swallowed every last bit.

For the first few seconds, nothing happened.

Then reality exploded.

*My blood… it's boiling.*

Yuno felt a volcano wake inside him. Every cell in his body came under assault from a foreign will. This was not magic — it was a genetic violation, crude and merciless. His bones began to lengthen, snapping apart at the joints with a series of sharp cracks. Yuno's scream was powerful enough to split the stone walls of the cavern.

"LOOK! LOOK AT THE BIRTH OF A MONSTER!" Queen launched into his insane dance again, flailing his arms overhead.

From Yuno's back — splitting through skin and mantle with a wet, splintering sound — black, bony wings began to tear free. They were nothing like King's elegant wings. These feathers were soaked in darkness and blood, rough and heavy. But the worst came from his shoulder.

The flesh on Yuno's right shoulder swelled into an enormous abscess, which burst open to reveal… a second head. It was the head of a black raven with a serrated beak and a single eye burning with a mad, golden fire. The raven's head jerked and let out a hoarse, croaking sound that echoed through Yuno's mind like a clap of thunder.

*Kill… eat… fly… kill…*

Foreign instincts poured into his thoughts, mixing with his own. Yuno felt his human self drowning beneath an ocean of animal fury. His wind magic — which had always been an obedient instrument — became a chaotic hurricane. Currents of black air began to spiral around him, cutting through everything they touched.

Sylph, watching the transformation, collapsed to the bottom of her cage. She was no longer crying. She stared at Yuno the way you stare at a monster — when nothing of your beloved friend remains inside it. Her bond with him had been desecrated by this animal force.

"Beautiful," Queen said, moving toward Yuno, who now hung heavily on the chains, his new body wracked with convulsions. "The Blue Raven… a Magic Zoan. You've become stronger than any captain in this world, kid. But the price… oh-h-h, you're not going to like the price."

Yuno slowly raised his head. His human face was twisted in a mask of agony, and the raven on his shoulder stared directly into Queen's eyes.

"As… ta…" Yuno barely breathed the word. "Forgive me…"

"Asta?" Queen smirked. "If your little friend is smart, he's already running for the other end of the world. And if not… well. I can always use more test subjects."

Queen turned and walked toward the exit, resuming his mad rhythm.

"Lock him in Udon! Let him sit with the rest of the lucky ones. I want to see how his magic interacts with the SMILE's will under conditions of sustained deprivation."

The doors slammed shut, leaving Yuno in the dark. His new wings dragged across the filthy floor, and the raven on his shoulder whispered words of hatred into his ear without pause.

The Clover Kingdom's greatest mage had ceased to exist. That night, deep within Onigashima, a monster was born — one whose laughter promised to be the herald of the end.
