Chapter 56 - 56. The Fixer history

Carson smiled at me as the song ended—Finally.

​"That was perfect, Elara. A little push was all you needed. You're gonna kill it. Like always," he said, turning to leave. "I'm rooting for you."

​Little? Yeah, right. I walked up to my bag and took out my inhaler. One sharp breath, then another.

I was getting my groove back, slowly reclaiming the life I had painstakingly built before the world decided to tear it down.

​It made me happy somewhere within that I was coming back out from the shadows, but then again... a cold, sobering thought crept in. If all this ended—if I wasn't tied to a legal case anymore—then I wouldn't have Isla by my side.

​I mean, I was going to be freelance right after the Freecs concert. I could as well make it my last, if I wanted to.

I wasn't sure I wanted to.

I felt a light tap on my shoulder. Ernest stood beside me, eyes carrying that quiet concern he had stopped hiding somewhere over the past few weeks.
