Chapter 23 - Chapter 22: The Phoenix’s Gamble

The Empress Dowager did not blink. Her gaze remained fixed on Ling Xiao, her eyes two sharp points of light that seemed to search for a crack in his serene facade. The silence in the Phoenix Pavilion was so absolute that the rustle of the gold-flecked silk scrolls in the hands of the court scribes sounded like thunder.

"Investments," the Empress Dowager repeated slowly, the word tasting strange in her mouth. "You speak of the Long bloodline as if it were a trade route to be managed, Young Master. It is a bold framing. Some might even call it blasphemous."

"It is only blasphemy if the investment fails, Your Majesty," Ling Xiao replied, his voice calm, rooted in the stability provided by the 'Scholar's Shroud'. "But a General who is focused, organized, and—for the first time in fifteen years—at peace, is a General who will not fail the Empire."

Lady Dou let out a sharp, brittle laugh. "Peace? Or distraction? Your Majesty, look at him. He speaks of ledgers while our borders require steel. He speaks of 'optimization' while the cradle sits empty. He is a parasite wearing the robes of a scholar."

Ling Xiao didn't turn to look at her. He kept his eyes on the Empress Dowager. "The cradle is not empty because of a lack of will, Lady Dou. It is empty because the General chose not to fill it with a legacy of duty without devotion. He waited for a 'Resource Optimization' that aligned with his soul".

The Empress Dowager's hand, adorned with long, jade-encrusted nail guards, tapped rhythmically against the arm of her throne. "You mention 'optimization' frequently. If you are as skilled with a ledger as you are with words, perhaps you can solve a problem that has plagued this court for three months. The supply tax for the Northern garrisons is in a state of chaos. The ministers claim it is a matter of geography; I suspect it is a matter of competence."

She signaled to a servant, who brought forward a heavy stack of papers. "If you can find the 'optimization' in these accounts by dawn, I will consider your presence in the Long household a 'material contribution' to the state. If not..." She trailed off, the implication clear.

"And if I succeed?" Ling Xiao asked, the accountant within him already beginning to categorize the data before the papers even reached his hands.

"If you succeed," the Empress Dowager said, her eyes narrowing, "I will grant the Long Clan's formal petition. You will have your court standing. And Lady Dou will return to her father's estate without further audience."

Lady Dou's face went ash-pale. "Your Majesty—"

"Quiet," the Empress Dowager commanded. She looked back at Ling Xiao. "Do we have a deal, Accountant?"

"We have a deal," Ling Xiao said, bowing low.

The night was long. Ling Xiao was moved to a side chamber within the Summer Palace. The 'Scholar's Shroud' hummed quietly in the background, masking the physical toll the mental exertion was taking on his recalibrating body.

[System Notification: Elite Quest Active.]

[Task: Resolve the 'Phoenix's Audit'.]

[Current Progress: 42%... 58%...]

[Warning: Physical stamina low. Prime Catalyst proximity recommended for recovery.]

Ling Xiao ignored the warning, his brush flying over the paper. He found the leak within three hours—a systemic siphon of funds disguised as 'transportation waste' in the grain accounts. It was a classic case of double-entry fraud, one he had seen a dozen times in his previous life.

As he finished the final calculation, a shadow fell over the doorway. It wasn't a palace guard.

Long Wei stepped into the room, his armor dusty from a hard ride. He looked at the stacks of paper, then at Ling Xiao's tired eyes. Without a word, he crossed the room and placed his hand on Ling Xiao's shoulder.

The effect was instantaneous. The 'Prime Catalyst' resonance flooded Ling Xiao's system, the warmth of the General's presence acting like a physical battery. The nausea and exhaustion vanished, replaced by a surge of clarity.

"You shouldn't be here," Ling Xiao whispered, though he leaned into the touch. "This is the Summer Palace. It's a breach of protocol."

"The protocol doesn't matter if you aren't safe," Long Wei growled, his hand tightening slightly on Ling Xiao's shoulder. "Shen told me about the deal. Why did you accept it? You could have waited for me."

Ling Xiao turned his head, his lips brushing the back of Long Wei's hand. "Because I needed to prove that I am not just something you 'allow' to stay. I am the reason you succeed."

Long Wei looked at him, the winter-sea eyes softened by a depth of emotion that no military scribe could ever capture. He didn't say anything, but he didn't move his hand either. He stayed there, acting as the silent, powerful anchor Ling Xiao needed to finish the work that would secure their future.

Author's Note:"The Accountant strikes back! 🖋️🔥 Chapter 22 takes us into the heart of Imperial power. While Lady Dou tried to use the 'heir' argument as a weapon, she underestimated Ling Xiao's ability to turn a political crisis into a mathematical victory.

The appearance of Long Wei at the end isn't just a romantic gesture; it's a mechanical necessity. As the 'Prime Catalyst,' his presence is what allows Ling Xiao to endure the 'Scholar's Shroud' while performing high-level mental tasks. They are truly becoming a single unit.

The Reveal: Ling Xiao has found the fraud. But in the Imperial Court, exposing a thief often means making an enemy of someone very powerful. Who was stealing the grain money? And will the Empress Dowager keep her word?

The Road to our Chapters: We are officially entering the 'Audit and Ambush' arc. Every victory in the ledger is a step toward the formal recognition of their bond, but it's also a step toward a much larger conspiracy.
