Chapter 30 - CHAPTER 30:When Running Stops Working

The sea behind them finally quieted.

No more ships in sight.

No more pursuit.

Only waves stretching endlessly into the horizon.

Kevin kept the ship moving forward for a long time before easing the sails.

He didn't trust silence immediately after a chase.

"…Distance confirmed."

Only then did he slightly relax his grip on the helm.

Not fully.

Just enough to stop immediate adjustments.

Carina sat on the deck, catching her breath.

The wind had settled, but her heartbeat hadn't.

"…They were really serious about that."

Kevin nodded slightly.

"…Yes."

No emotion in the answer.

Just confirmation.

He checked the ship first.

Ropes slightly strained.

Sail edges worn from fast adjustments.

Hull still stable.

"…Minor stress damage."

Nothing critical.

But noticeable.

Carina leaned back against a crate.

"…We keep saying 'just survive' but people keep trying to kill us."

Kevin replied calmly.

"…Because we are moving through their routes."

A short silence followed.

Only the sound of water against wood filled it.

Then Kevin spoke again.

"…We need longer-term preparation."

Carina looked up.

"…Like what?"

Kevin glanced briefly at the supplies.

"…Better ship capability."

"…More storage."

"…Less vulnerability during pursuit."

Carina frowned.

"…That sounds like we're getting stronger on purpose."

Kevin nodded.

"…Yes."

The wind shifted slightly.

Kevin adjusted course automatically.

The ship responded more smoothly now than before.

Experience was accumulating.

Carina watched him quietly.

"…You think about everything like it's a system."

Kevin answered.

"…It is."

Hours passed.

The sea remained empty again.

But this time, it didn't feel safe.

Just quiet after violence.

Carina stood up and walked toward the edge of the ship.

Looking at the water.

"…We didn't even get anything from that fight."

Kevin replied without turning.

"…We got information."

She frowned.

"…That's not useful right now."

Kevin corrected.

"…It is. Later."

Another silence.

Then Carina spoke again.

"…If we keep being chased like this… won't it get worse?"

Kevin nodded.

"…Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

Carina blinked.

"…That was fast."

Kevin continued.

"…Pressure increases when you survive encounters."

"…It attracts attention."

She looked at him more seriously now.

"…So we're getting stronger enemies over time."

Kevin nodded again.

"…Correct."

The realization settled between them.

Not fear.

Just understanding.

Carina exhaled slowly.

"…That's annoying."

Kevin replied.

"…Yes."

A faint pause.

Then Carina tilted her head.

"…So what's next?"

Kevin looked ahead.

No islands visible yet.

Only horizon.

"…We stop avoiding conflict."

Carina stared at him.

"…That sounds like fighting."

Kevin nodded.

"…If necessary."

The sea remained calm as they spoke.

But something about the journey had changed.

Not direction.

Not speed.

Intent.

Kevin adjusted the sails once more.

The ship moved forward steadily.

No longer purely escaping.

No longer purely surviving.

Carina sat down again.

"…This is getting complicated."

Kevin replied simply.

"…It always was."

The ship continued into open water.

But now—

It was no longer invisible.

And the sea had started to notice.
