Chapter 1 - Late bloomer

Chapter 1: The Late Bloom

The digital clock on the wall of the Madhapur apartment ticked toward midnight. For most, it was just another Tuesday in Hyderabad, but for Ajay—Aj to those who knew him—it was the final deadline of his youth.

Today was his eighteenth birthday.

Three years ago, when Aj was fifteen, the world had changed forever. A voice had thundered from the heavens, announcing the Great Trial. Massive portals, known as the Planets, had appeared over the Earth's surface. India had been granted two: the Northern and Southern Planets.

Along with the portals came the Awakening.

At fifteen, Aj had watched his classmates develop superhuman strength, elemental control, or the mark of an Apostle. He had watched his father, Vikram, become the world-renowned Apostle of the Moon, and his mother, Ganga Devi, become the Apostle of the River. They were the golden standard of India, leading the Chandra-Vansha Guild and sitting comfortably in the World Top 100 rankings.

But Aj? At fifteen, he felt nothing. At sixteen, still nothing. At seventeen, he had moved to this small apartment alone, unable to bear the "kind" looks of pity from his legendary parents. He was the "Black Spot"—the unawakened son of the world's most powerful couple.

"If I'm going to be a shadow, I'll be the one they never see coming," Aj whispered to the empty room.

[00:00:00]

A sudden, sharp coldness pierced his brain. It wasn't the warm, divine glow most Apostles described. It felt like an ancient book being slammed open in his mind.

[System Initialization: The Reader has arrived.]

[Soul Synchronization: 100%]

Aj gasped, clutching his head as golden strings of text began to weave themselves across his vision. This wasn't the standard blue "Player System" used by the Association.

[Unique Skill: Divine Reader (Rank: Unknown)]

"Knowledge is the only true divinity. You see the text behind the world."

[Unique Skill: Mythical Summoner (Rank: EX)]

"The Vahanas of old have no masters. They await the Sovereign."

Requirement: Reach Level 1 to manifest the first guardian.

Aj stared at his trembling hands. For three years, he had been a civilian. Now, he was something the world didn't have a category for. He wasn't an Apostle—he wasn't borrowing power from a God. He was reading the power of the universe itself.

He looked at an old, bronze statuette of a serpent his grandfather had left him. Suddenly, text floated above it.

[Object: Decorative Bronze Serpent]

[Hidden Truth: A vessel for a fragment of the King's soul. Break it to initiate the first contract.]

Aj didn't hesitate. He grabbed the statuette and smashed it against the floor.

The bronze shattered, but instead of metal shards, a thick, violet mist erupted. The shadows in the room began to coil like liquid silk. From the darkness, a pair of glowing, amber eyes ignited.

A serpent, five feet long and covered in scales that shimmered like polished obsidian and amethyst, slithered out of the void. The pressure in the room skyrocketed. The air became heavy with the scent of rain and ancient earth.

[First Summon Successful: Vasuki (The Serpent King)]

[Current Power: 50% of Mythological Peak]

«...Three years of waiting,» a voice hissed, echoing directly inside Aj's skull. It was deep, resonant, and carried the weight of eons. «The hatchling finally has eyes to see.»

Vasuki flared his hood, his massive form flickering between a physical body and a shadow.

«I am half of what I was, Sovereign, but even at half-strength, I shall crush the worlds that dare stand in your path.»

Aj reached out. The serpent didn't bite; it lowered its head, allowing Aj's fingers to brush against the cold, diamond-hard scales. In that moment, the "Black Spot" of the family vanished.

A loud, rhythmic banging at his door broke the silence.

"Aj! Open up! I know you're awake, I can hear your dramatic brooding from the hallway!"

It was Sia. His childhood friend and the only person who stayed by his side during his three years of being "powerless."

Vasuki vanished instantly, turning into a dark, intricate tattoo that spiraled around Aj's right forearm, hiding beneath his hoodie sleeve.

Aj opened the door. Sia stood there, holding a box of biryani and wearing a stubborn grin. Her eyes, however, flickered with a strange light. She had awakened a year ago with a unique skill, but she never bragged about it.

"Happy 18th, you weirdo," she said, stepping inside. She stopped, her nose wrinkling. "Why does it smell like... ozone and old temples in here?"

Aj tucked his hands into his pockets, feeling the faint pulse of the Serpent King on his skin.

"Just a change in the air, Sia," Aj said, a small, confident smile playing on his lips. "The world looks a lot clearer today."

Sia looked at him suspiciously. Her skill, [The Architect's Blueprint], twitched. For a split second, she saw the "lines" of the room, and every single one of them was bowing toward Aj.

"Whatever you say, Aj. But eat up. Tomorrow, we're going to the Association. It's time you finally got registered, even if it's just as a civilian."

Aj looked out the window toward the glowing portal of the Southern Planet in the distance.

"I'll register," Aj thought, his eyes turning cold. "But not as a civilian. And not as an Apostle."
