Chapter 1 - THE SELECTION

Hawthorne Crest College had always carried a reputation for excellence.

It was one of those institutions parents spoke about with pride and students spoke about with pressure. High academic standards, strict discipline, and a long history of producing successful graduates.

Everything about it appeared normal.

That was what most people believed.

MORNING ASSEMBLY

The entire school gathered inside the main hall.

Rows of students stood in silence or whispered softly to one another while teachers remained positioned along the sides, observing with quiet authority. The atmosphere was controlled, as it always was.

At the front stood the principal.

Mr. Adrian Collins.

He adjusted the microphone and looked over the hall without speaking immediately. There was a brief pause that lasted longer than it should have.

Then he began.

"Good morning."

His voice echoed clearly, but there was something unusual in the way it carried—slightly delayed, almost artificial.

A few students noticed it.

Most did not.

He continued.

"Today, there will be a selection."

The hall gradually became quieter.

A selection was not part of the usual schedule. No announcements had been made prior to this moment.

A student whispered near the middle rows.

"For what?"

No one answered.

The principal did not explain.

Instead, he turned slightly toward a screen mounted above the stage. It flickered to life, though it had never been used before.

Static filled the display.

Then text appeared.

STUDENT IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM: ACTIVE

A strange stillness spread through the hall.

The air felt heavier, though no one could explain why.

A second later, the first name appeared.

Daniel Carter.

Daniel looked up slowly.

There was confusion in his expression.

Before he could react, a voice came through the speakers.

"Step forward."

The command was calm and emotionless.

At the same time, the doors at the back of the hall locked with a sharp mechanical sound.

Students turned immediately.

Some stood up.

Teachers remained still.

Daniel hesitated for a moment, then walked forward.

As he approached the front, a scanning light passed over him.

Red.

Then green.

Then silence.

A moment later, a confirmation appeared on the screen.

SELECTED.

He was guided to the side without any explanation.

The second name appeared.

Tyler Brooks.

Tyler reacted differently. He frowned immediately.

"This is some kind of mistake," he muttered.

No response came.

"Step forward."

He did.

Then Evan Reed.

Then Sophie Grant.

Then Emily Watson.

Then Chloe Hayes.

Each name followed the same pattern.

A student stood up.

Walked forward.

Was scanned.

Then marked as selected.

The hall stopped reacting after a while. Not because people understood what was happening, but because uncertainty slowly turned into silence.

There was no visible explanation. No intervention from staff. No attempt to stop it.

Only observation.

Finally, only one name remained.

Noah Blake.

Noah had been sitting slightly apart from the others. He did not react when his name appeared.

He stood up without hesitation and walked forward.

There was no visible emotion on his face.

When he reached the front, all seven students stood in a line.

The principal looked at them directly for the first time.

Then he spoke.

"Unit Seven has been selected."

A pause followed.

The speakers activated again.

"Protocol confirmed."

"Activation initiated."

The floor beneath them shifted.

A hidden platform began to descend slowly.

The hall finally reacted.

Voices rose. Chairs moved. Confusion spread through the students.

"What is happening?"

"Where are they going?"

But no teacher intervened.

No one stopped it.

As the platform lowered, Daniel looked up once more at the hall above.

The others followed his gaze.

Chloe Hayes did not look surprised.

Sophie appeared tense.

Emily looked unsettled.

Tyler remained visibly irritated.

Evan stayed silent.

Noah showed nothing at all.

Then the doors above closed.

And the hall disappeared.

The descent continued into darkness
