Kael didn't sleep.
He lay on the cold concrete floor of the safe zone, staring at the purple sky through a hole in the roof. His mind was racing. Playing out scenarios. How to block the big sword. How to get inside Darrius's reach. How to survive.
None of the scenarios ended well.
He got up before dawn. His body was tired but his brain was wired. Too much adrenaline. Too much fear.
Sarah was already awake. She had a piece of bread and a bottle of water waiting for him.
"Eat," she said.
He ate. The bread was dry. The water was warm. It didn't matter.
"You look terrible."
"Thanks."
"I mean it. You have dark circles under your eyes. You're pale. When's the last time you slept more than four hours?"
Kael thought about it. He couldn't remember. "Before the system."
Sarah didn't say anything. She just put her hand on his arm.
The day crawled by.
Kael checked his gear a hundred times. The Butcher's Cleaver. The steel chestplate. The leather boots. His dagger. His health potions. The strength elixir. The Rage Stone.
He had skills. Quick Step. Detect Weakness. Night Vision. Bloodlust. Berserker Rage. Counter Strike. Improvised Weaponry.
Level nine. Against someone who was at least level fifteen.
The math was bad.
Maya came to find him around noon. Her arm was in a sling but she was moving fine.
"I've been watching the barrier," she said. "Darrius showed up an hour ago. He's waiting. Doing stretches. Sharpening his sword. He's not worried."
"He shouldn't be."
"Don't say that. You have a chance. He's cocky. Cocky people make mistakes."
"Cocky people also have armor and a real sword and twenty more levels than me."
Maya shrugged. "Then be faster."
Easy for her to say.
Patricia called a meeting in the afternoon. The whole safe zone gathered. Maybe two hundred people now. More had trickled in overnight. Survivors from other parts of the city.
"We're all behind you," Patricia said. "Whatever happens."
"That's nice. What happens if I lose?"
No one answered.
The sun started to set. The purple sky turned darker purple. The barrier flickered once. Then held.
Kael walked to the edge of the safe zone. Darrius was waiting on the other side. His sword was out. The blade was huge. Two feet long at least. It glowed faintly blue.
"Ready to die?" Darrius asked.
"No. But I'm ready to fight."
A new notification appeared.
[ARENA CHALLENGE INITIATED]
Fighters: Kael Chen (Arena 07) vs. Darrius (Arena 12)
Rules: No outside interference. Fight ends at death or surrender. Winner claims all.
The barrier opened. A door appeared. Big enough for both of them.
Kael stepped through.
The air outside was cold. The ground was asphalt. Broken. Cracked. There was a circle drawn in white paint. Maybe from an old parking lot.
Darrius walked to the center of the circle. He was even bigger up close. Six four at least. His arms were thick. His chest plate looked like it cost more coins than Kael had ever seen.
"You're smaller than I expected," Darrius said.
"I get that a lot."
"Any last words?"
"Yeah. You talk too much."
The system counted down.
1.
2.
3.
FIGHT.
Darrius moved first. Fast. Too fast. His sword came down in an arc. Kael used Quick Step. He slid to the left. The sword hit the ground where he had been standing. The asphalt cracked.
Kael swung the cleaver at Darrius's side. The blade scraped against the chest plate. Sparks. No damage.
[COMBAT]
Attack blocked. Armor reduced damage by 80%. Goblin Butcher's Cleaver: 7 damage dealt.
Darrius HP: 493/500.
Seven damage. Out of five hundred. Kael wanted to throw up.
"Nice try," Darrius said. He swung again. Horizontal this time. Kael ducked. The sword passed inches over his head.
He activated Detect Weakness. The skill highlighted Darrius's weak points. Neck. Armpits. Back of the knees. All covered by armor.
Except the face.
The face was exposed.
Kael lunged. The cleaver went for Darrius's eyes. Darrius pulled back just in time. The blade cut his cheek. A thin line of blood.
[COMBAT]
Hit! Darrius HP: 480/500.
Twenty damage. Better.
Darrius touched his cheek. Looked at the blood on his fingers. His eyes narrowed.
"You cut me."
"Yeah."
"Now I'm angry."
He came at Kael like a freight train. Sword swings. Punches. Kicks. Kael dodged. Blocked. Used Quick Step three times in a row. His MP was dropping fast.
Darrius's sword caught the cleaver. The impact jarred Kael's arms. The cleaver flew out of his hands. Landed ten feet away.
No weapon.
Kael pulled his dagger. It looked like a toothpick next to Darrius's sword.
"You're pathetic," Darrius said.
He swung. Kael used Counter Strike. The skill activated. His dagger met the sword. Parried. The counter attack drove the dagger into Darrius's shoulder. The gap between the chest plate and the shoulder guard.
[COMBAT]
Critical hit! Counter Strike bonus. Darrius HP: 410/500.
Darrius roared. He grabbed Kael by the throat with his free hand. Lifted him off the ground.
Kael couldn't breathe. His feet kicked. He stabbed at Darrius's arm. The dagger went in. Darrius didn't let go.
"You're annoying," Darrius said. He threw Kael across the circle.
Kael hit the ground hard. His head bounced off the asphalt. His vision went white. He tasted blood.
Get up, he told himself. Get up or you die.
He pushed himself to his knees. His left arm wasn't working right. His shoulder was dislocated. Maybe broken.
Darrius was walking toward him. Slow. Enjoying it.
Kael looked at his MP. Almost empty. His health was at 45/165. One more hit and he was done.
He still had the strength elixir. The Rage Stone. Health potions.
He pulled out the strength elixir and drank it. His STR went up to 16. Not enough. But something.
He pulled out the Rage Stone and crushed it. A red glow surrounded him.
[BERSERKER RAGE ACTIVATED]
30% damage increase. 20% defense reduction. Duration: 20 seconds.
He activated Bloodlust. The stacks started building. One enemy. Five percent.
He activated Berserker Rage skill. Another 30% damage.
Total damage boost: 65%. Defense: negative.
He was a glass cannon. A broken glass cannon.
Darrius swung. Kael didn't dodge. He stepped inside the swing. Let the sword hit his chest plate. The plate cracked. His ribs cracked. But he was close.
He drove the dagger into Darrius's throat.
[COMBAT]
Critical hit! Weak point exposed. Darrius HP: 280/500.
Darrius choked. Blood sprayed. He stumbled back. His hand went to his throat.
Kael didn't stop. He punched Darrius in the face. His knuckles split. He punched again. Again.
Darrius swung blindly. The sword hit Kael's side. The blade bit deep.
Kael's HP dropped to 12/165.
He was dying.
He pulled out a health potion. Drank it. HP went up to 62. The bleeding slowed.
Darrius was still bleeding from his throat. His HP was dropping. 260. 240. 210.
"Surrender," Kael said. "I'll let you live."
Darrius laughed. It was a wet, gurgling laugh. "Never."
He charged.
Kael used Quick Step. His MP hit zero. But the skill worked. He moved behind Darrius. The dagger went into the back of Darrius's neck. The weak point. The one place the armor didn't cover.
[COMBAT]
Critical hit! Darrius HP: 90/500.
Darrius fell to his knees. His sword clattered on the ground. He was still trying to fight. His fists swung. Weak. Slow.
Kael stood in front of him. The dagger was dripping blood.
"Surrender," he said again.
Darrius looked up at him. His eyes were glassy. His throat was a mess.
"I yield," he whispered.
[ARENA CHALLENGE COMPLETE]
Winner: Kael Chen (Arena 07).
Rewards: 5000 EXP. 2000 Coins. Epic item chest.
Arena 12 tribute: 10% of resources transferred.
Darrius collapsed. He wasn't dead. But he was close.
The barrier opened. People from the safe zone rushed out. Sarah grabbed Kael. Held him up.
"You did it," she said. "You actually did it."
Kael couldn't speak. His body was shutting down. His HP was flickering between 8 and 12. The health potions were gone. The bleeding wouldn't stop.
"Get him inside," someone said.
They carried him through the barrier. The safe zone's healing bonus kicked in. His HP started ticking up. 15. 20. 30.
He passed out.
When he woke up, he was in a bed. A real bed. Someone had dragged a mattress into the safe zone. It was dirty but soft.
Sarah was sitting next to him. She was asleep. Her head was on the mattress.
Kael looked at his status. Level 11. The boss fight had pushed him up two levels. His HP was full. His MP was full. His shoulder was back in place. The ribs were healed.
He had a new scar. A big one on his side. The sword wound.
He sat up. Sarah woke.
"You're awake," she said. Her voice was hoarse.
"How long was I out?"
"Two days."
Two days. He'd lost two days.
"What happened to Darrius?"
"He's alive. Patricia's people patched him up. He's in a makeshift cell at the edge of the safe zone. Some people wanted to kill him. Patricia said no."
"Patricia's smart."
"She also said you're now the official champion of Arena 07. Whatever that means."
Kael swung his legs over the side of the mattress. His body ached but it worked.
He opened the Epic item chest.
[EPIC ITEM CHEST]
Choose one:
1. Sword of the Fallen (Epic). Damage: 50 65. Special: 20% lifesteal.
2. Phantom Cloak (Epic). Defense: 25. Special: 15% dodge chance.
3. Ring of the Warlord (Epic). Special: 10% damage. 10% HP. 10% MP.
He stared at the options. The sword was tempting. But the cleaver was still good. The cloak would help him dodge. But the ring was all stats.
He took the ring.
[RING OF THE WARLORD]
Epic quality. 10% damage. 10% HP. 10% MP.
He put it on. His HP went up to 210. MP to 110. Damage to 39 49 on the cleaver.
Better.
He stood up. His legs were wobbly but they held.
"Where's Maya?" he asked.
"She's been scouting. The system announced something new. A second phase. Integration, they called it. The monsters are changing. Getting smarter. There's a nest about five kilometers east. Thousands of them."
"Thousands?"
"Maybe more."
Kael walked to the edge of the safe zone. The barrier was still there. But outside, the world looked different. The purple sky was darker. The vines were thicker. The buildings had more crystals.
And the goblins. There were more of them. Bigger ones. Some were riding giant lizards. Others had armor. Weapons.
The system was escalating.
A notification appeared. Global again.
[SYSTEM ANNOUNCEMENT]
Arena 07: Integration Phase 2 active.
New enemies unlocked.
New dungeons unlocked.
Safe zone shields reduced by 30%.
Survive.
Kael read it twice. Safe zone shields reduced by 30%. That meant the barrier was weaker. The goblins could break through easier.
"We need to move," he said. "Find a better safe zone. One with stronger shields."
"There's one north of here," Maya said. She had appeared next to him. Her arm was still in the sling but she looked better. "About ten kilometers. The map says it's a Tier 2 safe zone. Stronger shields. Better Shop."
"How do we get there?"
"Through the nest."
"Of course."
Kael looked back at the safe zone. Two hundred people. Maybe more. Most of them couldn't fight. Most of them would die on the road.
But if they stayed, they'd die too.
"Get everyone together," he said. "We leave at dawn."
"That's only a few hours from now."
"Then don't waste time."
Maya nodded. She ran off to spread the word.
Sarah was still standing next to him. "You're different," she said.
"Different how?"
"Harder. Like something broke inside you."
Kael thought about the fight. The moment he drove the dagger into Darrius's throat. The look in Darrius's eyes. The blood.
"Something did break," he said. "But I'm still here."
He walked to the cell where they were keeping Darrius. The big man was sitting on the floor. His throat was bandaged. His hands were tied.
"You should have killed me," Darrius said.
"No."
"I would have killed you."
"But you didn't."
Kael knelt down. "Tell me about Arena 12. How many fighters? How strong?"
Darrius laughed. It was a weak laugh. "You think I'll help you?"
"I think you want to live. And the only way you live is if you're useful."
Darrius was quiet for a long time. Then he said, "Arena 12 has three champions. I was the weakest. The others are level twenty and twenty five. They have real gear. Real skills. They'll come for you now. For revenge. For the tribute."
"When?"
"Soon."
Kael stood up. "Thank you."
He walked away. Darrius called after him. "You can't win. You're nothing."
Kael didn't look back.
He gathered his gear. The cleaver. The dagger. The ring. The chest plate was damaged. He used his coins to buy a new one. Steel. Same as before.
He had 2115 coins left after the reward. He bought another strength elixir. Another Rage Stone. More health potions.
He was as ready as he'd ever be.
Dawn came. The purple sky lightened to a bruised purple. The survivors gathered at the edge of the safe zone. Two hundred and thirteen people. Old. Young. Scared.
Kael stood at the front. Sarah on his left. Maya on his right. Cruz behind him with his arm still in a sling. Marcus with his rebar. Jen with her chain.
"We're leaving," Kael said. "The safe zone is dying. If we stay, we die. If we move, some of us might die. But some of us will live."
No one argued.
"Stay together. Stay quiet. When I say run, you run. When I say fight, you fight. No one gets left behind."
He turned toward the north. The nest was between them and the Tier 2 safe zone. Thousands of monsters.
He took a breath.
"Let's go."
