Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Fall

The rain had not stopped by the time Elena reached the main road.

Her dress clung to her skin, heavy with water, and her heels sank into the wet pavement with every step. The cold wind cut through her like a knife, but she barely felt it.

Her mind was still trapped in the bedroom she had just left.

Sophia's smile.

Adrian's silence.

The divorce papers.

Elena wrapped her arms around herself as she walked, trying to steady the storm raging inside her chest.

Three years.

Three years of marriage, loyalty, and love—gone in a single night.

A car rushed past, splashing water across the road. Elena didn't even react.

Her hand slowly moved to her stomach.

A secret Adrian didn't know.

A secret Sophia didn't know.

Earlier that morning, she had stared at the small white stick in disbelief as two faint pink lines appeared.

Pregnant.

She had planned to tell Adrian that night.

She had imagined his reaction a hundred times—surprise, happiness, maybe even tears.

Instead, she had walked in on him with her best friend.

Elena stopped walking.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"I'll protect you," she whispered softly, her voice shaking.

The child growing inside her was the only thing she had left.

A pair of headlights suddenly slowed beside her.

"Elena?"

She turned.

Lucas stepped out of the car quickly, shock written all over his face.

"Elena, what happened?" her younger brother asked, rushing toward her.

His eyes widened when he saw her soaked clothes and pale face.

"Why are you walking alone in the middle of a storm?"

Elena tried to speak, but her throat tightened.

"I… I left the mansion."

Lucas frowned.

"What do you mean you left?"

Her voice broke.

"Adrian divorced me."

For a moment Lucas didn't move.

Then anger flashed across his face.

"That bastard."

He grabbed her shoulders.

"What did he do?"

Elena shook her head slowly.

"It's over."

Lucas opened the passenger door.

"Get in the car."

She hesitated for a moment before climbing inside.

The warmth of the car made her shiver even more.

Lucas drove in silence for a few minutes, gripping the steering wheel tightly.

Finally, he spoke.

"Tell me everything."

Elena stared out the window at the blurred city lights.

"He thinks I cheated on him."

Lucas looked at her sharply.

"That's ridiculous."

"He said he saw photos of me entering a hotel with another man."

Lucas scoffed.

"You mean the investor meeting last month?"

Elena nodded weakly.

"I tried to explain, but he wouldn't listen."

Lucas's jaw clenched.

"And Sophia?"

Elena's chest tightened.

"She's pregnant."

The car suddenly slowed.

Lucas turned toward her in disbelief.

"Pregnant?"

"With Adrian's child."

For several seconds, the car was completely silent.

Then Lucas muttered angrily, "I'm going to kill him."

"Lucas, no," Elena said quickly.

"It won't change anything."

Lucas slammed his hand against the steering wheel.

"That woman was your best friend!"

Elena closed her eyes.

"I know."

The rest of the drive passed quietly.

When they reached Lucas's small apartment, he quickly grabbed an umbrella and walked her inside.

"You're staying here tonight," he said firmly.

Elena nodded, too exhausted to argue.

Lucas handed her a towel.

"Go take a hot shower. You're freezing."

She forced a small smile.

"Thank you."

A few minutes later, Elena stood under the hot water, letting it wash away the rain and tears she had been holding back all night.

But the pain inside her chest refused to disappear.

When she stepped out of the bathroom, Lucas was sitting on the couch, scrolling angrily through his phone.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

Lucas looked up.

"You should see this."

He turned the phone toward her.

A news headline filled the screen.

CEO Adrian Kingsley Files for Divorce After Wife's Alleged Affair

Elena's stomach dropped.

Another headline appeared below it.

Kingsley Family Insider Claims Elena Hart Was Seen With Mystery Man at Hotel

Her hands began to tremble.

"They're destroying you," Lucas said quietly.

Elena stared at the screen.

The comments were even worse.

Gold digger.

Cheater.

She only married him for money.

Tears blurred her vision.

Sophia had moved faster than she expected.

Lucas locked his phone and looked at her seriously.

"You should fight back."

Elena slowly shook her head.

"I'm tired, Lucas."

"You can't let them do this to you."

She placed a hand over her stomach again.

"I need to think about my child now."

Lucas frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Elena hesitated.

Then she whispered softly,

"I'm pregnant."

Lucas froze.

"You're… what?"

"Two months."

For a moment, he just stared at her.

Then his anger softened into concern.

"Does Adrian know?"

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Lucas leaned back against the couch.

"That idiot."

Elena sat beside him quietly.

Her life had fallen apart in less than twenty-four hours.

Her marriage was over.

Her reputation destroyed.

And the man she loved believed the worst about her.

But deep inside her chest, a quiet determination began to grow.

Maybe she had lost everything tonight.

But she wasn't completely alone anymore.

She had someone to protect.

And somewhere in the back of her mind, one thought slowly formed.

One day, Adrian Kingsley would learn the truth.

And when that day came…

Everything would change.
