Chapter 42 - Dinner, Distraction, and a Small Trap

Scene 1: A Rare Pause

The restaurant felt calm.

Soft lights.

Quiet surroundings.

Ayaan and Anaya sat across from each other.

No files.

No pressure.

Anaya glanced at him.

"You actually picked a peaceful place."

Ayaan:

"I prefer control."

Anaya smiled slightly.

"Even during dinner?"

Ayaan:

"Especially during dinner."

A pause settled between them.

Comfortable.

Then Anaya added:

"No interruptions tonight?"

Ayaan looked at her.

"That depends."

Anaya raised an eyebrow.

"On Kriti?"

Ayaan almost smiled.

Scene 2: The Call

Right then—

his phone rang.

Ayaan checked.

Mahi.

He answered immediately.

"Mahi."

Her voice came quickly:

"I parked the car and this old man is shouting that I almost hit him."

Ayaan's expression changed instantly.

Focused.

"What exactly happened?"

Mahi explained calmly.

Every detail.

People gathering.

The man shouting.

No actual contact.

Ayaan listened carefully.

Then said clearly:

"It's a fraud."

Anaya looked at him immediately.

Scene 3: Fast Thinking

Ayaan stood halfway.

"Stay there. I'm coming."

Mahi paused.

Then her tone shifted slightly—

lighter.

"Go ahead. I'm here alone."

Ayaan frowned.

And then—

Anaya leaned slightly toward him and said with a small smile:

"Eating alone is not good, Ayaan."

Ayaan turned toward her.

For a second—

he just looked.

Then he sat back down slowly.

Into the phone, he said:

"You're a better actor than that fraud."

On the other side—

Mahi almost smiled.

"Just stay alert," Ayaan added.

Call ended.

Scene 4: After the Call

Anaya leaned back.

Clearly amused.

"You were about to leave."

Ayaan:

"Yes."

Anaya:

"And then you stayed."

Ayaan:

"She told me not to worry."

Anaya smiled.

"And you listened."

Ayaan didn't answer.

But his silence said enough.

Scene 5: Mahi's Situation

At the parking area—

the old man continued shouting.

"You almost hit me!"

A small crowd gathered.

Mahi stood still.

Calm.

Not reacting.

Then—

a voice cut through the noise.

"That's enough."

Mahi turned.

Ishaan.

Scene 6: Ishaan Handles It

He stepped forward.

No rush.

No anger.

"Do you have proof?" he asked the old man.

The man hesitated.

Ishaan continued:

"There are cameras here."

Silence.

"Should we check them?" he added.

The man stepped back.

Murmurs spread.

Within seconds—

he walked away.

The crowd slowly dispersed.

Scene 7: Backup Arrives

A co-worker rushed in.

"Mahi, are you okay?"

Mahi nodded.

"Yes."

He added:

"Ayaan sir sent me."

Mahi paused slightly.

"…I know."

Scene 8: Ishaan & Mahi

Ishaan stood beside her.

"You handled it correctly," he said.

Mahi:

"I didn't do anything."

Ishaan:

"That's why it worked."

A pause.

Then he added:

"Avoid such situations next time."

Mahi:

"I didn't start it."

Ishaan:

"Still."

Silence again.

Scene 9: Back at Dinner

At the restaurant—

Anaya looked at Ayaan again.

"You trust her a lot."

Ayaan:

"She doesn't panic."

Anaya:

"And neither do you."

Ayaan didn't respond.

But this time—

the silence felt closer.

Not interrupted.

Not incomplete.

Just… growing.
