Chapter 7 - The Bond Becomes Addictive

Aria didn't sleep that night.

Not because she wasn't tired.

But because every time she closed her eyes, she felt him.

Not physically.

Not mentally like before.

Something worse.

A pull.

A quiet, persistent ache under her skin that only stopped when she opened her eyes again.

She sat on the edge of the narrow cot inside Kael's fortress chamber—no longer a cell, but still far from freedom. The chains were gone now, but the feeling of being watched never left.

Outside, the fortress had calmed after the invasion.

But Aria hadn't.

She pressed a hand to her chest.

The mark pulsed softly.

Like a heartbeat that wasn't hers.

"I'm losing my mind," she whispered.

The silence didn't answer.

But her body did.

A sudden wave of emptiness hit her.

Sharp.

Immediate.

She gasped and doubled over slightly.

"What… is that?"

It felt like something had been taken away.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

A missing presence.

Her breath quickened.

"No… no, no—this is ridiculous."

She stood abruptly and walked toward the door.

Maybe she just needed air.

Maybe she needed distance.

But the moment she stepped into the hallway—

It got worse.

The emptiness deepened.

Her chest tightened painfully.

She stopped.

"What is happening to me…"

Then she realized.

It wasn't absence.

It was him.

Kael wasn't near.

And her body was reacting like something essential had been removed.

Aria clenched her fists.

"This is insane."

She forced herself to keep walking.

But each step felt heavier.

Her thoughts became foggy.

Her emotions unstable.

And worse—

She started to feel him again.

Not fully.

Not clearly.

Just fragments.

A pressure.

A presence.

Like a thread pulling her back toward him.

Aria stopped in the middle of the corridor.

Her breathing was uneven.

"No," she whispered. "This is not happening."

She pressed her hand to the wall for support.

The bond pulsed again.

Stronger.

Warmer.

Addictive.

Her knees nearly buckled.

And that was when she heard footsteps.

Fast.

Controlled.

Familiar.

Aria looked up sharply.

Kael was walking toward her.

And the moment she saw him—

The emptiness vanished instantly.

Replaced by something else.

Relief.

So intense it frightened her.

Kael stopped a few steps away.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"You're awake."

Aria swallowed hard.

"…I didn't sleep."

Kael studied her face.

"You're unstable."

Aria let out a short laugh.

"I'm unstable?"

She gestured between them.

"This thing—whatever it is—it makes me feel like I'm dying when you're not around!"

Silence.

Kael didn't react immediately.

That alone unsettled her more.

Then he said quietly—

"It is not meant to be separated."

Aria blinked.

"What?"

Kael stepped closer.

The bond reacted instantly.

Warmth flooded her chest again.

Aria stiffened.

"Stop doing that," she whispered.

Kael frowned slightly.

"I am not."

Aria shook her head.

"You are. Just standing there—just being near me—it reacts."

Kael went silent for a moment.

Then—

"So does mine."

That confession landed heavily.

Aria looked up at him sharply.

"You feel it too?"

Kael didn't deny it.

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Aria felt her chest tighten again.

Not pain this time.

Confusion.

"This is wrong," she said quietly.

Kael stepped closer again.

"Wrong… or unfamiliar?"

Aria shook her head quickly.

"It's not normal."

Kael's gaze held hers.

"No."

A pause.

Then softer—

"It is ancient."

That word made something inside Aria twist.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Uncontrollable.

Kael continued.

"The bond was never meant to function in isolation."

Aria frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Kael studied her carefully.

"It means distance weakens you."

Aria stepped back immediately.

"That's not weakness. That's dependency."

Kael didn't deny it.

Instead, he said—

"Yes."

That single word made her freeze.

Aria stared at him.

"…you're admitting it?"

Kael nodded once.

The bond pulsed again between them.

Aria pressed a hand to her chest.

"This is insane," she whispered.

Kael stepped closer again.

And for a moment—

He stopped just close enough that she could feel his breath.

His voice lowered.

"You are reacting more than expected."

Aria looked up at him.

"What does that mean?"

Kael's eyes darkened slightly.

"It means your body is accepting the bond faster than your mind can reject it."

Aria shook her head quickly.

"No. I refuse it."

Kael studied her.

"Your body does not."

That sentence hit deeper than she expected.

Aria turned away sharply.

"Stop talking like I don't have control."

Kael didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"You are losing it."

Aria froze.

Slowly turned back.

"What?"

Kael's gaze remained steady.

"The bond is rewiring your perception."

Aria's breath trembled.

"That sounds like possession."

Kael stepped closer.

"It is connection."

Aria shook her head.

"Don't dress it up."

Kael's voice dropped slightly.

"If it were possession, you would not be standing here arguing."

That made her pause.

Silence stretched between them.

Then a loud voice echoed from the hall below.

"Alpha!"

Both of them turned.

A warrior rushed up the corridor, breathing heavily.

"Internal council meeting has escalated! They are demanding immediate action regarding the bond!"

Kael didn't look away from Aria.

"Let them wait."

The warrior hesitated.

"Alpha… they are threatening to declare instability in leadership."

Kael's eyes darkened instantly.

Aria felt the shift.

Dangerous.

Cold.

Controlled fury.

Kael finally turned slightly.

"Leave."

The warrior bowed quickly and left.

Silence returned.

Aria frowned.

"What was that about?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"The council believes the bond makes me vulnerable."

Aria crossed her arms.

"Are they wrong?"

Kael looked at her.

A pause.

Then—

"No."

That honesty hit again.

Aria let out a breath.

"So what happens now?"

Kael stepped closer.

"They will try to separate us."

Aria stiffened instantly.

"Good. Let them."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You do not understand the consequences."

Aria laughed bitterly.

"Oh, I think I do. Separation means I stop feeling like I'm being torn apart every time you're not around."

Kael went silent.

The bond pulsed again.

Stronger.

Aria gasped slightly.

Kael noticed immediately.

"You feel it again."

Aria clenched her jaw.

"Yes."

Kael studied her.

"…stronger than before."

Aria looked away.

"I hate it."

Kael didn't respond.

But his expression shifted slightly.

Something unreadable.

Then—

He reached out.

Not to touch her fully.

Just close enough for her to feel the warmth of his hand near her wrist.

The bond surged instantly.

Aria inhaled sharply.

And Kael stopped.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"So it intensifies on contact now."

Aria pulled her hand back quickly.

"Stop testing it like I'm some experiment."

Kael didn't argue.

Instead, he said quietly—

"It is not an experiment."

A pause.

"It is evolution."

Aria shook her head.

"I don't want to evolve into this."

Kael stepped closer again.

And this time—

His voice softened slightly.

"You already are."

Silence.

Aria looked up at him.

And for a moment—

Something shifted in the air between them.

Not hostility.

Not dominance.

Something dangerously close to understanding.

Kael spoke again.

"You will learn to control it."

Aria frowned.

"I don't want to control it. I want it gone."

Kael's expression darkened slightly.

"That is not possible."

Aria's chest tightened.

"Everything has an end."

Kael shook his head slightly.

"Not this."

A pause.

Then quieter—

"Not anymore."

That silence lingered heavily.

Aria stepped back slowly.

"I need space."

Kael didn't stop her.

But the bond immediately reacted.

A sharp ache hit her chest as she increased distance.

She flinched.

Kael noticed.

"You feel it."

Aria nodded reluctantly.

"…yes."

Kael's gaze held hers.

"That is why they fear it."

Aria swallowed.

"Who?"

Kael's eyes darkened slightly.

"The council."

A pause.

"And the hunters."

Aria stiffened.

"They're not done?"

Kael's voice lowered.

"No."

He turned slightly toward the corridor.

"And next time… they will not come for you alone."

Aria's stomach dropped.

"What does that mean?"

Kael looked at her over his shoulder.

And for the first time—

His voice was absolute.

"It means war is coming for the bond."

And this time…

It would not survive easily.
