Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3: The Moment That Should Not Exist

The first Titan lunged.

She didn't think.

Didn't hesitate.

Her body moved before her mind could catch up, cables firing with a sharp crack as she launched sideways. The Titan's hand slammed into the space she had occupied a fraction of a second earlier, shattering stone and sending debris into the air.

Too slow, and she would have been crushed.

Too predictable, and she would have died.

But she wasn't either anymore.

Not here.

Not now.

She adjusted midair, twisting her body to regain balance as she tracked the second Titan. It had already moved. Not toward Levi. Not toward Eren.

Toward her.

Her breath caught.

Why me?

There was no time to answer.

It charged.

Fast. Direct. Intentional.

That wasn't how Titans behaved.

Not like this.

Not with focus.

Her grip tightened.

Adapt.

She dropped her altitude, forcing the Titan to adjust its angle. Its massive arm swept down, but she had already shifted trajectory, cutting low across its blind spot.

The nape.

Always the nape.

She angled upward—

"Too early."

Levi's voice.

Cold. Sharp.

Her instincts screamed.

She pulled back.

The Titan twisted.

Its movement snapped toward her original trajectory—the exact point where her blades would have been.

A trap.

Her pulse spiked.

It anticipated me.

No.

That wasn't possible.

Was it?

She didn't have time to process it.

The third Titan entered the fight.

It came from behind.

Silent.

Too silent.

Eren intercepted.

Steel met flesh.

His strike drove deep into the Titan's shoulder, forcing it off balance before it could reach her. The force of his movement carried him past her, close enough that she felt the rush of air.

"You're hesitating," he said.

Not an accusation.

A statement.

Flat.

Controlled.

That wasn't right.

Eren didn't sound like that.

Not in battle.

Not ever.

"I'm adjusting," she shot back.

He didn't respond.

Didn't argue.

Didn't push.

He just moved again.

Faster.

More aggressive.

His blades carved through the Titan's arm, severing muscle and sending it crashing to the ground. No wasted motion. No excess force.

Efficient.

Too efficient.

Levi finished the first Titan.

Clean. Instant.

It dropped without a sound.

Then he turned.

Not to the remaining Titans.

To her.

"Focus," he said.

One word.

But it landed hard.

She forced herself to breathe.

In.

Out.

No more relying on what should happen.

Only what did.

The second Titan came again.

This time—

She waited.

A fraction longer.

Just enough.

It committed.

Its movement extended too far, its balance shifting forward—

Now.

She launched.

Cables snapped tight as she surged upward, her angle sharper, her timing precise. The world narrowed to a single point.

Blade.

Flesh.

Cut.

The strike landed.

Deep.

True.

The Titan froze.

Then fell.

She landed hard, her breath catching as adrenaline surged through her veins.

Better.

But it wasn't enough.

It would never be enough.

The third Titan roared.

Eren was already there.

Too close.

Too exposed.

"Pull back!" she shouted.

He didn't.

Of course he didn't.

He drove forward instead, his movement sharp and direct as he closed the distance in a single burst. The Titan swung wildly, its arm tearing through the air—

He didn't dodge.

He cut.

The blade struck first.

Deep into the joint.

The Titan staggered.

But not enough.

Its other arm came down.

Fast.

Too fast.

Her heart stopped.

This is where it happens.

Not the same scene.

Not the same moment.

But the same outcome.

Death.

She moved.

No hesitation.

No calculation.

Just instinct.

Her cables fired, pulling her into a steep arc as she closed the gap between them. The world blurred around her, everything collapsing into a single, desperate motion.

Too far.

Too late.

No—

She reached him.

Her body slammed into his, forcing him off his trajectory just as the Titan's hand crashed into the space he had occupied.

The impact shook the ground.

Debris exploded outward.

They hit the street hard, rolling across broken stone before coming to a stop.

Pain flared along her side.

Her vision blurred.

But she didn't care.

Not yet.

Not until—

She looked at him.

Alive.

Again.

A sharp breath escaped her.

I did it.

Again.

She had saved him.

Again.

But this time—

Something felt different.

He didn't push her away.

Didn't immediately move.

He just looked at her.

Close.

Too close.

His eyes locked onto hers.

Dark.

Unreadable.

"You did it again," he said.

Her pulse stuttered.

"What?"

"You moved before it struck."

Her throat tightened.

"I saw the angle—"

"No."

The word cut through her explanation.

Clean. Final.

"You knew."

Silence fell between them.

Heavy.

Suffocating.

"I didn't—"

"You did."

His voice didn't rise.

Didn't sharpen.

If anything—

It got quieter.

That was worse.

"You keep doing it," he continued. "Before anything happens. Before anyone else reacts."

Her chest tightened.

He's noticing everything.

Of course he was.

This was Eren.

But this—

This wasn't just observation.

This was analysis.

"You're reading the battlefield," she said. "That's what we're trained to do."

"Not like this."

The words landed with quiet certainty.

No doubt.

No hesitation.

He leaned slightly closer.

Not aggressive.

Not threatening.

Just enough to close the distance.

"Who are you?" he asked.

The same question.

But this time—

It carried weight.

Real weight.

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no answer she could give.

Not one that would satisfy him.

Not one that wouldn't make everything worse.

Footsteps approached.

Fast.

Levi.

Of course.

The pressure snapped.

Eren pulled back just as Levi landed nearby, his gaze sweeping over them in a single, sharp motion.

"You're both alive," he said.

Flat.

Neutral.

But his eyes—

They lingered.

First on Eren.

Then on her.

Assessing.

Calculating.

Always calculating.

"The area's not clear," Levi continued. "More are coming."

As if to prove his point—

A distant roar echoed through the streets.

Not one.

Multiple.

Her stomach dropped.

That's wrong.

There shouldn't have been this many.

Not here.

Not now.

Levi straightened slightly, his posture shifting in a way that signaled immediate action.

"We fall back," he said. "Regroup at the east corridor."

Eren stood.

No argument.

No hesitation.

But as he turned—

His gaze flicked back to her.

Brief.

Sharp.

Unresolved.

Then he moved.

She followed.

Because there was no other choice.

They launched into motion again, cutting through the ruined streets with renewed urgency. The sounds behind them grew louder—heavier.

More Titans.

Too many.

This wasn't a deviation anymore.

This was escalation.

Her mind raced as they moved.

What did I change?

One life.

One moment.

That was all it had taken.

And now—

Everything was unraveling.

Ahead, the corridor came into view.

Narrow.

Defensible.

A temporary refuge.

Levi landed first, his gaze already scanning the area for threats. Eren followed, then her.

For a brief moment—

They had space.

Breathing room.

But it didn't last.

Levi turned.

To her.

Of course.

"You," he said.

Her chest tightened.

"Explain."

No room for deflection.

No room for delay.

Not this time.

"I reacted," she said.

The same answer.

The same lie.

It sounded weaker now.

Even to her.

Levi stepped closer.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

Just deliberate.

"That's not what I asked."

Her pulse hammered in her ears.

"I don't have another answer."

"Then find one."

The words were quiet.

But they carried weight.

Authority.

Expectation.

Threat.

She met his gaze.

Held it.

Because looking away would be worse.

"I saw openings," she said. "That's it."

Levi studied her.

Long.

Silent.

Then—

"Tch."

He looked away.

Not convinced.

Not satisfied.

But not pressing.

Not yet.

That was worse.

Because it meant—

He was waiting.

Eren spoke.

"She's not lying."

The words cut through the tension.

Both of them turned to him.

Her breath caught.

Why—

Levi's eyes narrowed slightly.

"And you're certain of that?"

Eren didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

A beat of silence.

Then—

"Why?" Levi asked.

Simple.

Direct.

Dangerous.

Eren's gaze shifted.

Not to Levi.

To her.

For a second—

Too long.

Then back.

"Because I would have noticed."

The answer hung in the air.

Ambiguous.

Layered.

Not a defense.

Not really.

But not an accusation either.

Levi watched him.

Then—

"Hm."

Again.

That sound.

That quiet acknowledgment of something unresolved.

He turned away.

"Stay alert," he said. "We're not done."

No one argued.

No one relaxed.

Because they all felt it.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

And as the distant roars grew louder—

As the walls of the corridor seemed to close in—

She realized something else.

Something worse.

This wasn't just about survival anymore.

This wasn't just about fixing what she had broken.

Because now—

They were changing too.

Eren.

Levi.

The world itself.

All of it shifting.

All of it moving away from the story she had known.

And the more she tried to control it—

The further it slipped.

Her chest tightened.

What if I can't fix it?

The thought lingered.

Heavy.

Unanswered.

And ahead—

Something waited.

Something new.

Something that should not exist.
