Chapter 1 - The Day I Was Called Useless

"You're a disappointment."

The words echoed in the classroom, cold and sharp.

For a moment… everything stopped.

The sound of the fan… the murmurs… even my own breathing—gone.

All that remained was that one sentence.

A disappointment.

I stood there, unable to move.

My fingers tightened around the desk, but my body refused to respond. It felt like I had been stripped bare in front of everyone—exposed, judged, finished.

A few students laughed.

Softly.

But not soft enough.

I heard them.

I always do.

Others avoided looking at me, as if I didn't exist anymore. And some… looked at me with pity.

That hurt more.

Because laughter means they think you're a joke.

But pity?

That means they think you're already lost.

"Look at your marks," the teacher continued, his voice filled with disappointment. "Tell me, what exactly are you good at?"

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because I didn't have an answer.

Not a single one.

[Author's Thoughts]

This is where most people break.

Not because of the insult…

But because, deep inside—they believe it's true.

The bell rang.

Class ended.

Just like that.

Everyone stood up, talking, laughing, moving on with their lives.

As if nothing had happened.

As if I hadn't just been crushed in front of them.

I stayed seated for a few seconds.

Then quietly picked up my bag and walked out.

No one stopped me.

No one cared.

By the time I reached the college gate, the sky had turned orange.

The kind of orange that looks tired… like it's giving up on the day.

"Hey."

I froze.

That voice.

I turned slowly.

She stood there.

The same person who once made everything feel okay.

Now… she looked like a stranger.

"Aarav… we need to talk."

Four words.

And somehow, I already knew everything.

"Okay," I said.

She hesitated.

Then said it.

"I don't think this is working anymore."

Silence.

Not outside.

Inside me.

"It's not just today," she continued. "It's everything. You're not changing, Aarav."

Her eyes met mine.

And I saw it.

No anger.

No sadness.

Just… certainty.

"I can't stay with someone who has no future."

Each word hit harder than the last.

"I deserve better."

[Author's Thoughts]

Sometimes people don't leave because they hate you…

They leave because they stop believing in you.

And that hurts more than anything.

I wanted to stop her.

Say something.

Anything.

But the truth was…

I didn't even believe in myself.

So how could I ask her to?

I nodded slowly.

"Yeah," I said quietly. "You do."

For a moment, she looked surprised.

Maybe she expected me to fight.

But I didn't.

I stepped aside.

And let her go.

She walked away.

Without looking back.

That night…

I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling.

Dark room.

Silent walls.

Heavy thoughts.

Everything replayed again and again.

The classroom.

The laughter.

Her words.

A disappointment.

No future.

I deserve better.

At some point…

I stopped feeling.

No anger.

No sadness.

Just emptiness.

And that's when it hit me—

Maybe this is who I really am.

[Author's Thoughts]

Rock bottom is a dangerous place.

Because you either stay there forever…

Or you build something from it.

I sat up.

Slowly.

Walked to the mirror.

And looked at myself.

Messy hair.

Tired eyes.

A face that had already accepted defeat.

For a few seconds…

I just stared.

Then I asked,

"Is this really me?"

No answer.

But something inside me… shifted.

Not motivation.

Not excitement.

Just… a decision.

Quiet.

Cold.

Final.

"This is the last time," I said.

My voice didn't shake.

"The last time I feel like this."

I looked straight into my own eyes.

"I don't care how long it takes."

"I don't care how painful it gets."

"I will change."

No energy.

No hype.

Just a promise.

And promises made in silence…

Are the most dangerous ones.
