Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 : Emotional Gaps

The academy continued its rhythm.

Lessons. Movement. Voices.

Everything functioned correctly.

But Velarisse noticed something she couldn't ignore anymore.

It wasn't loud.

It was absence.

Classroom — Midday Lesson

The teacher's voice filled the room steadily.

Velarisse sat with perfect posture, pen moving across her notes.

Around her, classmates listened, wrote, whispered occasionally.

Normal.

Yet—

"…Didn't we already go over this section?"

A student behind her murmured it casually.

Another replied, just as casually:

"I think so. Maybe it's just review."

Velarisse paused slightly.

Her pen stopped.

[Maybe?]

That word didn't fit.

Not here.

Not in something already "done."

She looked down at her notes again.

Everything matched.

Everything was correct.

So why did it feel… familiar in the wrong way?

Corridor — Between Classes

Velarisse walked alone for a moment.

Students passed her naturally.

Some greeted her.

Some simply smiled without thinking.

It was always like that.

But today—

She noticed something missing.

Not in them.

In her memory of them.

A group passed by.

They laughed briefly.

Velarisse stopped for half a second.

[What were they talking about just now?]

She couldn't recall clearly.

That had never happened before.

Then it happened.

She saw Lunivara.

Just across the corridor.

Standing with movement as calm as always.

Nothing unusual.

Yet—

Velarisse's thoughts slowed slightly.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Just a strange mismatch.

[Why does it feel like she was… closer earlier?]

The distance between them was physically the same.

But emotionally—

it didn't match her memory of the day.

Lunivara turned slightly and walked on.

Velarisse followed the movement with her eyes.

And something inside her resisted labeling it.

Because every explanation she tried—

failed.

Velarisse continued walking.

But her thoughts didn't fully align anymore.

She remembered speaking in class.

She remembered Lunivara being present.

She remembered normal interaction.

And yet—

something about it felt lightly displaced.

Like the emotion of the memory didn't belong to the memory itself.

"…Didn't we already talk about this?"

She paused mid-step.

No one had spoken to her.

The sentence wasn't real.

But it felt like it had been.

Velarisse stopped near the window.

Outside, the academy courtyard moved normally.

She placed a hand lightly against her chest.

[This isn't jealousy.]

That was the clearest thought.

Because she didn't feel threatened.

Or excluded.

Or replaced.

It was something quieter.

More uncomfortable.

It felt like:

people remembered Lunivara slightly differently

moments around her didn't stay consistent

emotional weight didn't match presence

But none of it could be proven.

Elsewhere, Lunivara walked alone for a moment between buildings.

She paused slightly.

Not physically.

Mentally.

[Something is slightly misaligned.]

She didn't know what.

Just the impression.

Like a soft delay in meaning that never fully formed into thought.

Then it passed.

She continued walking.

Velarisse returned to movement.

The hallway noise resumed around her.

Everything normal again.

But now she couldn't fully un-feel it.

That small gap.

That missing alignment between:

memory

emotion

presence

She exhaled slowly.

"…What is that?"

No answer came.

Only the academy continuing forward as if nothing had shifted at all.
