Chapter 3 - The adventure of Toto

"The Adventure of Toto" is a humorous story that revolves around a naughty monkey named Toto and the trouble he creates after becoming part of a family.

The grandfather was very fond of animals and had a small private zoo at home. His collection included a variety of animals such as a tortoise, a squirrel, and even a goat. One day, he saw a monkey being mistreated by a tonga-driver and decided to buy it for five rupees. He named the monkey Toto.

Grandfather believed Toto would make a delightful pet because of his bright eyes and expressive face. Toto looked innocent, but his behavior soon proved otherwise. He was extremely mischievous and destructive.

At first, Toto was kept hidden from Grandmother because she did not like new animals. He was placed in a closet, but within a short time, he tore the wallpaper, shredded the narrator's school blazer, and caused complete chaos in the room. It became clear that Toto could not be kept confined.

When Grandmother eventually found out about Toto, she was not pleased. Still, Toto was allowed to stay, and he quickly made himself at home—though not peacefully. He had a habit of breaking dishes, tearing clothes, and troubling other animals.

One of Toto's funniest habits was his love for bathing. He would carefully step into a tub of warm water, testing the temperature with one foot at a time. If the water felt right, he would sit comfortably and enjoy his bath like a human. Once, he even tried bathing in a kettle of boiling water placed on the stove. He kept jumping in and out as the water grew hotter, until he almost got himself cooked. Luckily, Grandmother noticed this in time and saved him.

Another major incident occurred when Grandfather decided to take Toto along on a train journey to Saharanpur. Since animals were not allowed without paying a fare, Grandfather tried to hide Toto in a black canvas bag. However, Toto kept peeping out of the bag, attracting attention. At the railway station, the ticket collector spotted him and insisted that Toto was a dog, charging a fare of three rupees. Grandfather argued that Toto was a monkey, not a dog, but the ticket collector refused to listen.

When they reached Saharanpur, Toto's mischief continued. One day, during lunch, Toto grabbed a dish of pulao and climbed a tree. He ate some of it and threw the rest at the family members, making a mess and wasting food.

Despite his amusing antics, Toto's behavior became too troublesome and expensive. He broke many valuable items, and it became difficult for the family to manage him. Finally, Grandfather realized that Toto could not be kept as a pet. He decided to sell Toto back to the same tonga-driver for the same price he had paid.

🎯 Conclusion

The story ends on a humorous yet meaningful note. While Toto brought laughter and excitement, he also caused destruction and inconvenience.
