Chapter 156: Uchiha Kou's Demise
Intense agony flared through her frayed nerves, a blinding white heat that threatened to drag her into unconsciousness. Kou forced her heavy eyelids open. Her dimming gaze locked onto Mie. Despite the gruesome state of her body, her voice emerged with an eerie, unnatural calm.
"None of that matters anymore," she murmured, blood bubbling past her lips. "The moment I drove that blade into Jiraiya, I severed my ties. I knew I could never step foot in Konoha again... But Konoha still has the Hokage. It has Tsunade, Orochimaru, Dan... As long as they remain safe, my life is a cheap price to pay."
Mie stared down at her, his Rinnegan swirling with cold detachment. He simply could not process her logic.
"You had no reason to fight with such reckless desperation. You do not even belong to this world. You are nothing but a wandering soul from another dimension."
A faint, bloodstained smile graced Kou's lips. She marshaled the very last dregs of her fading strength, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper.
"I fought... because someone once told me that he believed in me. Unconditionally. No matter what."
"Ridiculous, trivial bonds." Mie scoffed, losing whatever fleeting interest he had in her motivations. He raised a hand, preparing to draw the final curtain on this farce. "If you won't speak, I will simply rip your soul from your flesh and sift through your memories myself."
"You forget," Kou rasped, her smile widening into something sharp and mocking. "I am a Root operative. Codename: Kou. Number One. My absolute greatest specialty is ensuring the enemy gets absolutely nothing from my head. Only a fool like Jiraiya would ever believe that the explosive tags and poison I left in plain sight were my actual trump cards."
A jagged black seal flared to life on her forehead. The cursed ink surged beneath her skin, burrowing directly into her skull. From the perspective of the hidden observers, the complex, venomous-looking curse mark rapidly spider-webbed outward, ruthlessly locking down her entire brain.
The moment the seal completed its violent invasion of her neural pathways, it severed her life force at the root. The final, flickering ember of her chakra snuffed out into nothingness. Her eyelids fluttered shut. That faint, infuriatingly serene smile remained etched on her face.
Black Zetsu surged forward from the shadows, his dark mass bubbling with panic as he tried to initiate some form of emergency resuscitation. It was entirely futile. Uchiha Kou had completely stopped breathing. She was dead.
Ignoring the frantic shadow, Mie clamped his pale hand directly over Kou's cooling forehead. The concentric rings of his Rinnegan pulsed with a dangerous, heavy chakra.
"Human Path!"
Silence stretched for several agonizing seconds. Finally, Mie lowered his hand, his expression darkening.
Black Zetsu slithered closer, his yellow eyes wide with urgency. "Well? Did you get it? What did you see?"
Mie shook his head in cold dismissal. "The probe was rejected. Her mind is a locked vault. I retrieved absolutely nothing."
Black Zetsu practically melted, collapsing into a pathetic puddle of pitch-black sludge on the ruined earth. A heavy, suffocating aura of total depression and self-loathing radiated from his liquid form.
Mie drove a boot unceremoniously into the depressed puddle.
"Get up. Dig out her Sharingan. We tracked her trail back to the Land of Rain earlier. She must have hidden the real prize there. We are leaving for the Land of Rain immediately."
Grumbling, Black Zetsu peeled himself off the dirt. He reached down and roughly gouged the Mangekyo Sharingan from the corpse's sockets, his movements jerky and violent as he vented his mounting frustrations. He forced himself to look on the bright side. 'At least I secured a spare pair of Mangekyo. These can still be useful.'
Just as the duo turned to depart, the mutilated corpse on the ground underwent a bizarre transformation. The cold, solid flesh began to emit a soft, ethereal luminescence. Mottled cracks spider-webbed across her skin, exactly like a shattering porcelain doll. Whatever dimensional anchor had held her in this world finally snapped. Her physical form rapidly crumbled, dissolving into fine, glowing sand that drifted upward into countless motes of starlight.
Under their stunned gazes, the brilliant motes of light slowly dimmed, bleeding directly into the fabric of the void until nothing remained.
At that exact same second, the freshly harvested Mangekyo Sharingan resting in Black Zetsu's palms lost their weight. They crumbled into the exact same glowing sand, slipping right through his dark, grasping fingers, vanishing without a single trace.
When the wind settled, the clearing was completely empty. No corpse. No physical evidence that Uchiha Kou had ever existed.
Black Zetsu stared blankly at the bloodstained earth. He slowly raised his empty, pitch-black hands. His yellow eyes twitched violently. The ultra-rare, freshly acquired Mangekyo Sharingan he had literally just secured... were gone.
"It seems her death triggered an automatic return to her native time and space," Mie noted, his voice devoid of pity. "A shame she only returns as a lifeless corpse. A completely meaningless endeavor."
Mie shifted his piercing gaze back to the seething shadow. "It appears your intelligence was accurate after all. I will reluctantly trust your words for now. However, heed my warning: from this day forward, you are forbidden from coming anywhere near my Rinnegan."
'Those eyes belong to me.'Black Zetsu kept his mouth firmly shut, though his amorphous body practically vibrated with apocalyptic rage. He had been thoroughly scammed. He slithered away from the ruins like a venomous black snake, melting into the frozen earth.'No matter the cost, I must secure the Rinnegan first.''Calm down,' he chanted internally, desperately trying to soothe his own fractured sanity.'You are Black Zetsu. You have manipulated history for over a thousand years. You cannot let a single, infuriatingly shameless troll break your spirit. Do not panic. Absolutely do not panic. You still have time. What is a mere decade or two in the grand scheme of things? You have all the time in the world.'
The moment the two villains vanished into the treeline, the oppressive barrier surrounding the ruins shattered, dissolving into the freezing air without a power source to sustain it.
Kato Dan's ethereal spirit tore out from his hiding spot. He stumbled forward, lunging desperately toward the exact patch of dirt where Kou had drawn her last breath. His translucent hands grasped at the empty air. He phased right through the lingering snowflakes, finding absolutely nothing.
If not for the dark, steaming bloodstains soaking into the frost, and the discarded kunai that had previously pierced her flesh, Dan would have genuinely believed he had been trapped in a high-level genjutsu.
Spirits lacked the physical biology to cry. Yet, as he knelt over the bloodstained snow, phantom tears burned hot tracks down his translucent face.
He hadn't even known Uchiha Kou that well. They had only crossed paths at a handful of village gatherings. To him, she had always been a quiet, stoic, and fiercely reliable comrade.
But Tsunade had constantly spoken of her. Through Tsunade's fond, exasperated stories, Dan had painted a vivid picture of the Uchiha girl's true character. He remembered their final encounter vividly. Tsunade had accidentally shoved Kou into him, and his hand had brushed against the bandaged stump of her severed right wrist.
In that fleeting moment, deep respect had taken root in his heart. She was a warrior who bled for her village. It was no wonder Tsunade cherished her so deeply. He had always refused to believe that a shinobi willing to sacrifice her own limbs for her comrades could ever truly betray her own beliefs.
And now, thanks to the unique properties of his Spirit Transformation Technique, he had been granted a front-row seat to the brutal, heartbreaking truth.
He desperately wished he could have reached out to her in her final moments. He wanted to tell her that she hadn't died alone in the cold. He had seen everything. He could carry this heavy truth back to Konoha, ensuring that her name was cleared and her ultimate sacrifice was honored.
But she was gone. Her very corpse had been annihilated by the cruel laws of time and space. She would never know that someone out there finally understood the agonizing burden she had carried for them all.
Heavy with grief, his spirit drifted back through the biting, razor-sharp winds, plunging back into his physical body.
Dan gasped, his eyes snapping open as a wave of intense disorientation washed over him. He pushed himself up from the snow. The gruesome scenes of Kou's final stand played on an endless, torturous loop in his mind. Yet, the impulsive, burning desire to scream the truth to the heavens had already cooled into a grim realization.
This intelligence was far too dangerous to be casually disclosed. The revelation of an otherworldly identity, the existence of the Rinnegan, the shadowy figures manipulating the ninja world—none of it could be spoken aloud to the standard operatives.
"Well, Dan?" Might Duy asked, his thick eyebrows furrowed in concern as he stepped forward. "Who was Uchiha Kou fighting out there? Did you manage to gather any solid intelligence?"
Dan slowly shook his head. The immense, suffocating grief of Kou's sacrifice battered against his mental defenses, eventually morphing into the scarred, guilt-ridden face of Jiraiya.
Could he even tell Jiraiya the truth?
He desperately wanted to pull the Toad Sage aside and wipe away the crushing guilt that had haunted the man for the past five years. But a darker fear gripped him. What if the brutal reality of Kou's true intentions—and her subsequent, agonizing death—proved to be a blow far more unbearable than the lie of her betrayal?
He didn't know what the right path was anymore. In this frozen wasteland, he only knew one absolute certainty: this S-rank intelligence had to be transported back to the village immediately and delivered directly to the Hokage's desk.
"Duy... don't ask," Dan finally rasped, his voice tight. "We are returning to Konoha. Now."
He swallowed the lump in his throat, forcing a mask of professional composure over his shattered emotions, and plunged forward into the howling snowstorm.
In the shinobi world, the phrase 'don't ask' carried a heavy, unspoken weight. It meant the intelligence classification was far above their pay grade. Understanding the severity of the situation, Might Duy and the accompanying Uchiha operatives immediately dropped their inquiries, falling into a tight formation behind him.
They moved with desperate speed, eager to leave the snow-ravaged borders of the Land of Frost far behind them.
Behind them, the fierce, biting winds swept across the ruined battlefield. Dense, howling flurries of snow blanketed the scarred earth, turning the world into a vast, silent expanse of white, quickly burying the bloodstains and erasing all traces that Uchiha Kou had ever been there at all.
