Chapter 1: The Night Everything Fell Apart

The first thing Elena noticed was the laughter.

Not soft laughter. Not joyful laughter.

It was sharp… cutting… like knives thrown carelessly into the air.

Her steps slowed.

Something wasn't right.

The grand ballroom shimmered under golden lights, filled with elegantly dressed guests, glasses clinking, music floating softly in the background. It was supposed to be the happiest night of her life.

Her night.

Elena tightened her grip on the small velvet box in her hand, her heart pounding with nervous excitement. She had spent weeks preparing for this evening, believing every word Daniel had told her.

"Just trust me, Elena. Tonight will change everything."

She had believed him.

God, she had believed him.

A small smile touched her lips as she stepped further into the hall, her simple dress a quiet contrast to the luxury around her. She didn't belong here, and everyone knew it—but tonight was supposed to be different.

Tonight, he was going to make her belong.

"Look who decided to show up."

The voice was familiar.

Too familiar.

Elena's smile faltered as she lifted her gaze.

Vanessa.

Her best friend.

But the way Vanessa was looking at her now… it wasn't friendly. It wasn't warm.

It was mocking.

Cold.

A strange chill crept down Elena's spine.

Her eyes shifted—slowly, almost unwillingly—to the man standing beside her.

And in that moment…

Her world stopped.

Daniel stood there, tall and confident, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit.

But his arm—

His arm was wrapped around Vanessa.

Not loosely.

Not casually.

Possessively.

As if she belonged there.

As if Elena didn't exist.

The room seemed to tilt.

"Daniel…?" Elena's voice came out soft, fragile, like it might break if she spoke any louder.

He didn't rush to her.

He didn't look guilty.

Instead… he smiled.

And that smile wasn't the one she knew.

It was distant.

Almost amused.

"You're late," he said simply.

Late?

Her fingers trembled around the box in her hand. "What… what is this?" she asked, her voice shaking despite her effort to stay calm.

Vanessa let out a soft laugh, leaning her head against Daniel's shoulder like it was the most natural thing in the world.

"Oh, Elena," she said, her tone dripping with fake sympathy. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be."

Harder?

Elena's chest tightened. "Daniel, tell me what's going on."

For a moment, there was silence.

Then Daniel sighed, as if she was the inconvenience.

"I was going to tell you," he said, adjusting his cuff casually. "But since you're already here… I guess it saves me the trouble."

Something inside Elena cracked.

"What are you saying…?"

Vanessa lifted her hand slightly, the diamond ring on her finger catching the light.

Blinding.

Cruel.

"We're getting married," Vanessa said smoothly.

The words hit Elena like a slap.

"No…" she whispered, shaking her head. "No, that's not possible. Daniel, you told me—"

"I told you what you wanted to hear," he cut in, his voice cold now. "Let's not pretend you didn't know your place, Elena."

Her place?

The room spun.

"I loved you…" she said, the words slipping out before she could stop them.

And just like that—

Laughter erupted again.

Louder this time.

More vicious.

Vanessa smiled, but there was no kindness in it. "Loved him?" she repeated, amused. "Elena, you were never more than a convenience."

Convenience.

The word echoed in Elena's mind, over and over again.

Her hands shook. Her vision blurred.

Everything she thought was real… every promise… every moment—

A lie.

Daniel stepped closer, lowering his voice just enough for only her to hear.

"You should be grateful," he said. "At least you got to experience a life you could never afford."

Her breath caught.

That was it.

That was how little she meant to him.

Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. Not here. Not in front of all these people watching her like she was some kind of entertainment.

Slowly, carefully, Elena lifted the velvet box in her hand.

"I was going to give this to you tonight," she said, her voice quieter now… steadier.

Daniel raised a brow, mildly curious.

But before he could say anything—

Elena let it fall.

The box hit the floor with a soft thud.

Just like her heart.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

She looked at him one last time.

At the man she thought she knew.

At the love she thought was real.

And then—

She turned and walked away.

Each step felt heavier than the last, but she didn't stop.

She couldn't.

Not when everything inside her was breaking.

Not when staying would destroy what little dignity she had left.

The cold night air hit her the moment she stepped outside, wrapping around her like a cruel reminder that she was alone.

Completely alone.

Her chest rose and fell unevenly as she tried to breathe, but it felt impossible.

Why?

Why did it hurt this much?

Her phone buzzed in her hand, pulling her out of her thoughts.

Unknown number.

For a moment, she hesitated.

Then she answered.

"Hello…?"

Silence.

Then—

A man's voice.

Cold. Deep. Dangerous.

"Sign the papers," he said, "or your father dies tonight."

Elena froze.

Her heart stopped.

"What…?" she whispered, her fingers tightening around the phone.

"This isn't a joke," the voice continued calmly. "You have ten minutes to decide."

Her mind went blank.

"My father is dead," she said, her voice trembling.

A soft chuckle came from the other end.

"Is he?" the man replied. "Then who is currently begging for his life?"

The line went silent.

Elena's blood ran cold.

Ten minutes.

Her world had already fallen apart tonight.

But somehow…

It was about to get worse.

And without realizing it—

Elena had just stepped into a game far more dangerous than heartbreak.
