Chapter 5 - Friction

Training resumed as if nothing had happened.

That was the first thing Kai noticed.

No announcement. No adjustment. No attention given to the fact that he had just been placed into Tiger Squad.

The system moved forward without him.

Jin-Sensei stood at the front of their section of the mat.

"Tiger Squad," he said. "Basic stance work."

Mateo moved immediately.

Luna followed.

Kai hesitated for half a second, then stepped into place beside them.

Three students.

One sensei.

Tiger Squad.

"Front stance," Jin-Sensei said.

Mateo shifted smoothly.

Luna followed with controlled precision.

Kai moved a second later.

It felt wrong instantly.

His balance was off. His weight uneven.

"Stop," Jin-Sensei said.

All three froze.

He walked past Mateo first.

No correction.

Past Luna.

A slight adjustment of her back foot.

Then he stopped in front of Kai.

"Incorrect."

Kai held his position.

"Fix it," he said.

Jin-Sensei did not respond to the tone.

He adjusted Kai's stance directly.

Moved his foot.

Lowered his center of gravity.

Shifted his shoulders.

"Again."

Kai tried to hold it.

It felt unnatural.

Unstable.

Mateo spoke without looking at him.

"You can't even stand properly."

Kai turned his head slightly.

"I just got here."

"That doesn't matter," Mateo replied. "You're still slowing us down."

Kai straightened slightly.

Jin-Sensei tapped his shoulder.

"Do not break form."

Kai reset.

Frustration pushed at him.

Mateo continued.

"This isn't a place where you figure things out slowly."

Kai ignored him.

Tried to hold the stance.

His legs already felt strained.

"You don't belong here," Mateo said.

That got a reaction.

Kai turned fully this time.

"I was placed here."

"That doesn't mean you deserve it."

Kai stepped forward.

Breaking stance completely.

Jin-Sensei did not stop him.

He simply watched.

Kai faced Mateo directly.

"We're in the same squad," Kai said.

Mateo finally looked at him.

Direct.

Sharp.

"No," Mateo said. "You're in my squad."

The distinction was clear.

Kai felt irritation spike immediately.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I earned this position," Mateo replied. "You didn't."

Kai laughed once.

Short.

Dry.

"Then why are you in the lowest squad?"

The question landed.

Mateo's expression did not change.

But something tightened behind it.

Luna spoke quietly.

"That is enough."

Neither of them listened.

Kai stepped closer.

"If you're so good, why are you here?"

Mateo's eyes sharpened.

"Because I haven't proven I belong higher yet."

The answer was immediate.

Controlled.

"And you haven't proven you belong anywhere."

Kai's jaw tightened.

He stepped closer again.

Too close now.

"You don't know what I can do."

Mateo held his ground.

"I know what you just showed."

Kai clenched his fists.

He could feel it building again.

That same pressure.

That same need to push.

To prove something.

To force the situation to change.

"You haven't seen anything yet," Kai said.

Mateo's response was immediate.

"I've seen enough."

Silence hung between them.

Tight.

Sharp.

Luna watched both of them.

She did not move.

Did not interrupt again.

She was observing.

Measuring.

Jin-Sensei finally spoke.

"Reset."

Neither of them moved.

"Reset," he repeated.

Kai stepped back first.

Mateo followed.

Both returned to position.

"Again," Jin-Sensei said.

They resumed stance.

Kai forced himself to hold it.

But his focus was gone.

His attention split.

Part of him still locked on Mateo.

On the tension.

On the need to prove something.

Mateo adjusted his stance slightly.

Perfect control.

No wasted motion.

Kai noticed it.

And it irritated him more.

Luna held her position.

Balanced.

Stable.

Uninvolved.

Jin-Sensei walked past them again.

No corrections for Mateo.

None for Luna.

He stopped in front of Kai.

"Lower," he said.

Kai adjusted.

His legs strained further.

"Hold."

Kai held.

His muscles tightened.

His balance wavered.

He forced it steady.

From the corner of his vision, he saw Mateo shift again.

Effortless.

Controlled.

Everything Kai was not.

"You are forcing it," Jin-Sensei said.

Kai did not respond.

"You are trying to impose strength without structure."

Kai exhaled through his nose.

"I'll get it."

"You are not getting it now," Jin-Sensei said.

Clear.

Direct.

Kai's irritation flared again.

"I just need time."

Mateo spoke again.

"You don't have time."

Kai snapped his head toward him.

"What does that mean?"

Mateo met his gaze.

"It means if you slow us down, you get replaced."

Kai frowned.

"Replaced by who?"

Mateo did not answer immediately.

Then...

"Anyone better than you."

The words were simple.

Certain.

Kai felt them settle.

This was not just about training.

This was about position.

About survival within the system.

He understood that part.

But he refused to accept the conclusion.

"I'm not getting replaced," Kai said.

Mateo stepped forward slightly.

Now they were close again.

"You already should be," Mateo said.

The tension returned instantly.

Stronger this time.

Kai stepped forward to match him.

"You don't decide that."

Mateo's voice stayed calm.

"No," he said. "But I can make it obvious."

Kai stared at him.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Mateo held his gaze.

"You're dead weight."

The words landed clean.

No anger.

No hesitation.

Just fact, from Mateo's perspective.

Kai felt it hit.

Harder than anything else so far.

Dead weight.

Not just behind.

Not just inexperienced.

A burden.

Something that dragged others down.

Kai's fists tightened.

"You don't know me."

"I don't need to," Mateo replied.

Kai took another step.

Now there was no space between them.

Luna moved slightly.

Not to separate them.

Just closer.

Watching.

Jin-Sensei said nothing.

He allowed it.

Mateo spoke again.

"If you stay like this, you don't belong here."

Kai's voice rose slightly.

"I'm not staying like this."

Mateo did not react.

"Then prove it."

Kai froze for a fraction of a second.

That was it.

The line.

The challenge.

Not emotional.

Not dramatic.

Simple.

Direct.

Mateo looked at him without blinking.

"Prove you deserve to be in Tiger Squad," he said.

A pause.

"Or leave."

Silence settled again.

This time heavier.

Final.

Kai felt it clearly.

This was not about being accepted.

This was about earning the right to exist here at all.

And right now...

He had not.
