Chapter 10 - TRACE

The forest had grown quiet again, but this time, the silence felt deliberate rather than natural.

He moved through the broken terrain without making a sound, his steps light despite the damage still lingering in his body. The further he distanced himself from the collapsed mana zone, the thinner the surrounding energy became, losing its oppressive density and returning to a weaker, more manageable state.

It was easier to control.

But far less useful.

His circuits adjusted automatically, maintaining stability as the environmental pressure dropped.

[SYNC RATE: 74%][ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCE: STABLE]

He exhaled slowly as faint traces of mana gathered instinctively around his fingers.

"It's inefficient," he muttered under his breath.

Without pressure, growth slowed. Without resistance, evolution stagnated. The world itself felt less responsive, less alive compared to the dense zone he had just left behind.

Still, he did not stop moving.

Not yet.

Then, suddenly—

He did.

Something was wrong.

It was not a presence that alerted him, but the absence of one. The mana around him had lost its natural flow, becoming unnaturally still, as if the environment itself had been flattened and suppressed into uniformity.

Artificial.

Controlled.

His eyes narrowed slightly as his circuits reacted instinctively.

[ANOMALY DETECTED][FIELD DISTORTION: EXTERNAL INTERFERENCE]

"They're already here," he said quietly.

He did not look around.

He did not move.

Because he already understood.

Above him, hidden within the canopy, several figures remained perfectly still as they observed their target.

Their presence was nearly impossible to detect. Their mana signatures were suppressed to the lowest possible level, blending seamlessly into the environment as if they did not exist at all.

This was not a hunting party.

This was a containment unit.

"Target confirmed," one of them whispered through a low-frequency communication channel.

"Maintain suppression," another voice replied calmly. "Wait for full lock."

At the center of their formation stood a man with his eyes closed, his expression focused as thin threads of mana extended outward from his body. Those threads embedded themselves into the surrounding space, weaving together into a layered structure.

A net.

Invisible.

Precise.

"…lock complete," he said.

Below, he exhaled slowly.

"So this is how they hunt."

Not with brute force.

But with control.

[WARNING: MULTI-LAYER FIELD DETECTED][FUNCTION: SUPPRESSION / CONTAINMENT]

The air suddenly collapsed inward.

A crushing force descended from all directions, compressing the surrounding mana into a dense cage that locked onto his position. His circuits flared instantly, reacting to the sudden restriction as his internal flow was forcibly suppressed.

The pressure was not chaotic like before.

It was structured.

Engineered.

"…a cage," he murmured.

The ground beneath him cracked as the force intensified, but the field itself remained intact, absorbing and redistributing the impact with perfect efficiency.

Then—

"Execute."

They moved all at once.

Four figures dropped from above, their descent controlled and silent until the final moment when their circuits activated simultaneously. Reinforced mana surged through their bodies, forming structured layers of defense and attack that far exceeded anything he had faced before.

They were not testing him.

They were ending it.

The first strike came from above, fast and precise, aimed directly at his center of mass.

He reacted immediately, shifting his body just enough to avoid a fatal hit, but not enough to escape completely. The impact slammed him into the ground, the suppression field amplifying the force as his circuits struggled to compensate.

Pain surged through him.

But his expression did not change.

"Good," he said quietly.

[COMBAT DATA COLLECTION: ACTIVE]

The second attacker moved in without hesitation, following up with a reinforced strike meant to destabilize his already compromised structure.

This time, he did not dodge.

He accepted it.

[ABSORPTION PHASE ACTIVATED][MULTIPLE HIGH-LEVEL PATTERNS DETECTED]

The impact drove deeper into him, forcing foreign mana structures into his circuits as they clashed violently against his own.

The third attacker joined immediately, layering additional suppression into the field, tightening the cage and further restricting his ability to move or react.

They were not trying to kill him.

They were trying to capture him.

"…worse," he muttered.

Because that meant they understood his value.

[WARNING: CAPTURE PROBABILITY HIGH]

The fourth strike landed cleanly.

Everything went white for a moment as his body absorbed the full force of the attack, his circuits flickering violently as they approached collapse.

Then—

Silence.

"…enough."

Something shifted inside him.

Not from the outside.

But from within.

All the fragments he had gathered, all the structures he had broken down and reconstructed, began to react simultaneously as if responding to a single trigger.

[TRIGGER CONDITION MET][ENERGY RESTRUCTURING FUNCTION UNLOCKED]

His eyes opened slowly.

Clear.

Focused.

Different.

"…so this is the next step," he said.

The suppression field tightened further, attempting to crush him completely.

But this time—

He did not resist.

Instead, he adapted in a different way.

He changed the structure.

Rather than forcing mana through blocked pathways, he reconfigured its flow entirely. The energy within his body twisted into a new pattern, bypassing the restrictions imposed by the external field and forming a separate internal system.

[ENERGY RESTRUCTURING: ACTIVE]

The pressure did not disappear.

But it stopped affecting him.

He moved.

The nearest attacker reacted instantly, adjusting his stance to intercept—

Too late.

His strike landed cleanly, not with overwhelming force, but with precise structural disruption. The man's reinforced mana layers collapsed instantly as the restructured energy bypassed his defenses entirely.

"…what—"

He dropped.

Unconscious.

The remaining attackers froze for a fraction of a second.

"…he broke the interaction," one of them said.

"Impossible," another replied.

He stepped forward calmly, his movements controlled and efficient.

"You rely too much on fixed structures," he said.

The remaining attackers moved again, faster and more aggressive than before, their attacks layered with increased output in an attempt to overwhelm him through sheer force.

But now—

He could see everything.

Every pattern.

Every flow.

Every weakness.

Their attacks reached him—

And failed.

Not because they lacked power.

But because he had changed how power worked.

One by one, they fell.

Silence returned.

Above, the controller staggered as his connection to the field collapsed, his control severed completely.

"…he's not just adapting anymore," he whispered.

"…he's rewriting."

Below, he stood alone.

Unrestricted.

Unharmed.

[EVOLUTION PHASE COMPLETE]

[NEW ADAPTATIONS GENERATED]→ Energy Restructuring (Active)→ Anti-Suppression Response→ Pattern Disruption (Low)

He looked up calmly, meeting the unseen observers directly.

"Send more."

Far away, within the white structure, a figure watched the entire exchange in silence before speaking.

"…confirmed."

A brief pause followed.

"Escalate to containment class."

Back in the forest, he resumed walking.

But now, everything had changed.

Because this time—

He wasn't just evolving.

He was becoming something that no system, no structure, and no world could fully control.
