Chapter 5 - Second Match- Shadow and Ice

Ice

The queue popped almost instantly. This time the system matched them against a more coordinated pair: a Level 32 mage and a rogue who clearly knew each other well. The map was a misty canyon with narrow bridges and plenty of ambush spots — perfect for Yun Qing's style, deadly for anyone who underestimated him.

They spawned together again. Ling Feng's voice came through chat, calm but with a new note of interest.

"Same roles. I front, you flank. But don't hold back this time."

Yun Qing's lips curved faintly. "Wasn't planning to."

The match started with a bang. The enemy mage opened with a wide-area slow spell, trying to lock them down. Ling Feng tanked it effortlessly, his control skills creating a protective bubble that let Yun Qing slip into the mist.

Shadow Step activated. The world dimmed as Yun Qing became a ghost.

He circled wide, using the canyon walls for cover. His assassin instincts read the rogue's positioning like an open book — the way the enemy shifted weight, the slight pause before striking. In his past life, that micro-tell would have meant a silenced bullet to the head.

Here, it meant a perfect Shadow Burst from behind.

The rogue's health bar vanished in a burst of dark energy and precise dagger strikes. Critical. Critical. Dead.

"Behind you!" the mage screamed too late.

Ling Feng capitalized instantly, locking the mage in place with a root skill. "Finish it."

Yun Qing didn't need telling twice. He emerged from the shadows like death itself, landing the final combo. The mage's desperate counter-spell grazed his shoulder — minor damage — but the match ended in six minutes flat.

Post-match lobby.

Ling Feng's avatar didn't disappear. Instead, he leaned against a virtual rock, silver eyes fixed on Yun Qing.

"You're scary when you want to be," he said quietly. There was no mockery in his tone — only genuine curiosity. "Most rookies panic when focused. You… you hunt. Who trained you?"

Yun Qing stayed silent for a moment, old memories flashing: rainy rooftops, blood on concrete, the sting of betrayal. He pushed them down.

"Life," he answered simply. "Some lessons stick."

Ling Feng hummed, the sound low and thoughtful. "Life, huh. You sound like you've seen real fights, not just pixels."

The words hit closer than Yun Qing liked. He changed the subject. "You don't usually duo with randoms. Why me?"

A pause. Ling Feng's avatar shifted slightly, as if the Ice Emperor was choosing his words carefully.

"Because you're different. Most players chase damage numbers or flashy skills. You fight like it matters. Like losing isn't an option." His voice dropped. "And… I wanted to see it again."

The air between their avatars felt heavier. Yun Qing's new, younger heart beat a little faster. He told himself it was just adrenaline from the match.

Before he could reply, a system notification appeared for both of them.

Ling Feng spoke first. "Enter with me."

It wasn't a question. Yet it didn't feel like an order either — more like an offer he hoped Yun Qing wouldn't refuse.

Yun Qing looked at the tall figure in silver-black gear. The man who had just fought beside him with perfect trust, even without knowing his secrets.

Trust.

The word tasted strange after two lifetimes of betrayal.

He exhaled slowly. "...Alright. Let's enter."

Ling Feng's usual cold expression softened by a fraction — almost a smile. "Good. I'll send the team invite. We should practice more. Maybe… outside the game too, if you're comfortable."

The suggestion hung there, carrying the first real hint of real-world interest.

Yun Qing's fingers tightened on the virtual controls. In his cramped apartment, the cheap VR helmet felt suddenly warmer against his face.

This was getting dangerous.

But for the first time, the Shadow Emperor didn't want to disappear into the night.
