Queen Maeve, having successfully bluffed her way through, returned to her room and pulled out the backup phone hidden inside the wardrobe.
She opened the album. Inside lay the group photos of Stormfront with those Nazi officials. But she didn't send the photos to Starlight right away. Instead she simply explained what had happened.
"That's how it is. I got caught and Homelander took the photos back."
...
Cut to Starlight's side.
After reading Maeve's text she couldn't help letting out a sigh. Really a pity. They had been so close to succeeding. Who would have thought Homelander would notice at the critical moment.
"We'll cut contact for the next few days. When the time is right I'll send you a new phone number by email."
"Understood."
After receiving Starlight's reply, Queen Maeve skillfully pulled out the SIM card, snapped it in half, and flushed it down the toilet.
"I've got one good piece of news and one bad piece of news. Which one do you want to hear first?" Starlight looked at everyone in the basement and shrugged.
"The good one. I just heard a bad piece of news and need something good to ease my mood." Saying this, Hughie glanced at Butcher. Not only Hughie, even Frenchie and the others were full of resentment toward Butcher right now. Their operation had been a complete success and even brought unexpected gains.
But that perfect situation had been completely ruined by one video from Butcher.
"Maeve found those blackmail photos of Stormfront. It turns out Homelander really did have the originals." Starlight said.
"Alright, I can basically guess what the bad news is."
Hughie dug a can of beer out of the fridge, popped it open with a crack, and took a drink.
"It's really unbelievable. We clearly passed the ball right in front of the goal with no one defending. All someone needed to do was give it a light kick and we would have won the match. Instead that guy kicked the ball out of the stadium. My God, who knows how much longer I'll have to stay in this basement."
Hearing Hughie's complaints, Butcher, knowing he was in the wrong, could only keep a dark face and stare motionless at the computer screen.
"Don't be so down. At least we saved Butcher's son." Frenchie mocked while rubbing his own head. "I just hope that after he's released he doesn't blow our heads off with laser eyes. I saw the photos from the scene. That sight… tsk tsk tsk, simply too horrible to look at."
"I'm planning to send Becca away." Butcher suddenly spoke.
"Is that so? I thought you two were going to spend your honeymoon here." Frenchie picked up the heavy rifle on the table and checked the body of the gun. "You sure she'll leave America without seeing Ryan first? Don't make me laugh. I just hope she doesn't expose the location of the basement, otherwise we'll really have nowhere to go."
"Guys, I found something interesting."
Mother's Milk spread a poster out in front of everyone. "Doesn't this newest superhero Vought just launched look a little familiar? I feel like I've seen her somewhere."
"You mean Pure White Witch? She did attract a lot of popularity with that deliberately mysterious outfit, but what does that have to do with us? Is she your relative?" Hughie was currently in full "I don't care" mode. He casually glanced at the poster in Mother's Milk's hand. Although he also found it familiar, he didn't think much of it.
"I can't find any information about Pure White Witch online. It's like she appeared out of thin air. And do you know what her power is?"
"Witchcraft? Or mixing poisons?" Because of all the things that happened these past few days, Hughie had zero interest in caring about Vought's newest superhero.
"It's telekinesis."
The moment Mother's Milk finished speaking, Frenchie, Hughie and the others all frowned at the same time. Not long ago they had just run into someone with extremely strong telekinesis. That bald woman's strength was way beyond Kimiko's brother. She was a pure nightmare.
"I remember Lamplighter mentioned her to me once. Her name was something like…"
"Cindy." Frenchie filled in.
"You've got to be kidding me. She's the psycho from Sage Grove, the lab rat Vought was studying. Don't tell me the first thing she did after escaping was not take revenge on Vought but go join Vought instead. My God, this world must be crazy." Hughie refused to believe Pure White Witch and Cindy were the same person even if you killed him.
Starlight sitting by the sofa also shook her head. "That doesn't make sense. If I were Cindy I would definitely take revenge on Vought."
"Unless…"
Butcher, whose senses had always been sharp, suddenly thought of a possibility.
"Unless she got caught by Vought and they used some method to force her into becoming a new superhero and working for Vought."
"For example?" Hughie spread his hands.
"For example sticking a bomb up her ass, or threatening her with her family's lives. Those are the usual methods Vought uses." Butcher seemed to have found another breakthrough point.
He wiped the lethargy from his face and said with renewed energy, "As long as we can get in contact with her and confirm she's the Cindy from Sage Grove, everything after that becomes easy.
We help her remove Vought's threat, and she'll go crazy taking revenge on Vought. With her strength she can turn the entire Vought Group upside down."
In reality Butcher's guess this time was extremely accurate.
After Cindy lost the fight against Homelander, Edgar locked her in a lab and planted several micro bombs inside her body.
That was how they managed to control her.
Although Cindy wanted revenge on Edgar, the bombs inside her were a fatal threat. Forced by that fatal threat she could only lower her head to Edgar.
"What should we do? Find a chance to contact her?" Hughie asked.
"That's right. We join forces with her and take out Stormfront directly."
The recovered Butcher showed a ferocious smile.
"Forget it. Joining forces with her is worse than asking the mysterious man for help. The Compound Six on him is actually pretty useful. Apart from making you forget what happened yesterday, just like getting blackout drunk, it has almost no downsides." Before knowing what method Vought was using to control Cindy, Hughie was worried that contacting her rashly might make her turn around and side with Vought.
"This time I agree more with Hughie's idea."
The shadow Cindy left on Frenchie was simply too deep. He had almost died at her hands.
"In that case we'll split up. Hughie, you contact the mysterious man, but remember not to touch that fucking Compound Six. Don't blame me for not warning you. Only God knows what the side effects of that shit are.
As for Frenchie and Mother's Milk, you keep investigating Payback and try to find the location of one of its members. I'll go contact Cindy. I refuse to believe she doesn't hate Vought." Butcher stood up. The fire of revenge in his eyes was burning fiercely once again.
