The final echoes of the introductions dissolved into the sterile air of the classroom, leaving behind an uncomfortable, heavy silence. The students sat scattered throughout the classroom, their visual and social contrasts more glaring than ever.
The sound of the lock turning was unnaturally loud, echoing through the room like a gunshot. Before anyone could vocalize their confusion, Mr. Vale reached for the cords of the heavy, thick curtains lining the large windows. With a single, sharp pull, the blinds slammed shut all at once.
Darkness swallowed the classroom instantly.
The bright, warm afternoon sun was completely blocked out, leaving only a dim, eerie shadow cutting across the desks. The sudden transition made several students gasp. The air inside the room instantly grew colder, the temperature dropping so rapidly that Shonte could see the faint mist of his own breath in the dim light.
From the middle row, Min-soo tilted his head, his snowy-white hair catching faint shadows. He leaned back slightly toward his brother.
"Ooh, look at this," Min-seo whispered, a small twisted grin appearing on his face. "It's giving gothy vibes. Very theatrical."
"Agreed," Min-soo murmured. He reached down, lightly touching the dark crystal pendulum hanging around his neck. "The energy in the room just shifted. I kind of love it."
Mia popped her gum again in the dark. "If we're about to do a seance, I didn't bring my candles, boys."
"Quiet," Elena snapped from the front row, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound authoritative. "Mr. Vale, turn the lights back on. This is completely unprofessional. We are students, not participants in a haunted house."
Mr. Vale didn't answer her. Instead, he walked back to the front of the room, his movements stiff and mechanical, like a puppet being pulled by invisible strings. He stood perfectly centered before the blackboard, his head lowered slightly. When he spoke, his voice was different— flatter, more echoing, carrying a weight that didn't seem to belong to a normal human being.
"You may save your complaints, Miss Mire. From this moment forward, I am going to be your guide. Your mentor. The administrator of your development."
Tyler let out a sharp, mocking laugh from his seat. "A guide? Buddy, I don't know what kind of power trip you're on, but I don't need a guide to tell me how to get an A. Open the door."
Mr. Vale ignored him completely. His blank gaze swept over the twelve faces in the dark. "Each of you had been chosen for a specific reason. Whether you realize it or not, each of you has gotten a message, one way or another.
In the back row, Shonte's blood ran cold. The word 'message' triggered something unstable inside his mind. He thought of his dreams— the dark, suffocating shadows, the towering figures, the unearthly voice that had haunted his sleep. It wasn't a coincidence. None of this was a mistake. A sudden wave of panic washed over him, making his chest feel tight. He didn't want to be part of whatever twisted game this was. He didn't want to be special.
Without thinking, Shonte blurted out, his voice cracking slightly in the quiet room. "I don't... I don't want to be here. Let us leave."
Mr. Vale's head snapped toward the back corner. His movements were too fast to be natural. His pale face seemed to gleam in the shadows as his unblinking eyes locked directly onto Shonte. A cold, chilling smile spread across his face as he stared at him, though his jaw remained completely rigid.
"Oh...." Mr. Vale whispered, the sound echoing from the walls rather than his mouth. "So you're the one. The anomaly. The favourite."
Shonte recoiled tightly into his seat, his confusion turning into pure terror. "What? What are you talking about? What do you mean by 'the one'
The others turned to look at Shonte, their expressions a mix of confusion and growing fear. Elena frowned, looking between Shonte and the teacher, while the Park twins leaned forward, their dark crystal pendulums gently vibrating against their chests.
"Wow...cool."
Mr. Vale tore his gaze away from Shonte, looking back out at the collective group. "Listen to me very carefully. What happens in this room today could change each of your lives forever. The world you think you know is merely a fragile thin crust over a vast, incomprehensible reality. Your mundane grades, your social statuses, your familial wealth— they mean absolutely nothing where you are going."
"And where exactly are we going?" Farah demanded, her usual academic confidence cracking. Damian nodded beside her, his exhausted eyes wide with alarm.
"Into the pages," Mr. Vale answered calmly. "To learn, to survive, and to evolve. You will be required to enter books physically—literary worlds, historical records, and arcane texts. Within those pages, you will face trials. You will complete dangerous quests and survive lethal encounters. With every quest you complete, you will unlock latent abilities. You will inherit power. You will become stronger than any ordinary human could ever dream of being."
For a moment, the room was entirely still. The concept was so absurd, so entirely detached from reality, that the students didn't even know how to process it.
Then, Tyler stood up.
He slammed his hands down on his desk, the loud thud breaking the silence. He sneered at the teacher, his face twisted in utter disbelief. "Okay, that is it. I've had enough of this delusional garbage. Books? Quests? Gaining superpowers? I didn't think the education district would send a literal madman to run a support program. You belong in the psychiatric ward, not a high school."
Tyler grabbed his expensive backpack, slinging it over one shoulder. He began marching confidently toward the locked door. "My father is going to hear about this before I even reach the parking lot. You're finished, Vale."
"Tyler, sit down!" Elena hissed, though she looked just as terrified.
Tyler didn't listen. He reached out, his hand wrapping around the metal doorknob.
But before he could turn it, the shadows in the room seemed to violently twist. A sudden, invisible force slammed into Tyler's chest. With a loud gasp, he was violently yanked backward through the air. He flew across the aisle and slammed forcefully back into his seat. The desk rattled violently, but Tyler was pinned flat against the backrest, an invisible weight pressing down on his shoulders so hard he could barely breathe.
"What the-!, I can't move! Something is holding me down!" Tyler panicked, his arrogant demeanor completely shattering into a high-pitched terror.
"What did you do to him?!" Malik shouted, finally dropping his phone as his massive frame tensed, ready to fight.
Before a riot could break out, Shonte suddenly let out a sharp cry of agony. He collapsed forward over his desk, his hands clawing at his uniform shirt. A searing hot burning feeling erupted in the dead center of his chest. It felt as if a branding iron was being pressed directly into his ribs, the heat radiating outward through his veins. He gasped for air, his vision blurring as the burning sensation grew unbearable.
