Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: A Life Without Direction

Chapter 2: A Life Without Direction

The door clicked shut behind him.

Silence.

That was the first thing loki noticed every time he came home.

No voices.

No footsteps.

No one waiting.

Just… quiet.

He tossed his keys onto the table without much thought and walked further inside. The house was simple, but modern—clean lines, minimal furniture, nothing unnecessary.

He had bought it two years ago.

Back when he thought money would fix everything.

It didn't.

Loki exhaled slowly and ran a hand through his hair before heading straight to his room.

The faint glow of his computer screen lit up the space as he turned it on. Within seconds, familiar sounds filled the silence—menu music, notifications, digital noise.

He dropped into his chair.

"Let's just kill some time…"

Hours passed without him really noticing.

Game after game.

Win. Lose. Repeat.

It didn't matter.

Nothing really did.

At some point, he leaned back, staring at the ceiling.

"…What am I even doing?"

No answer came.

Of course it didn't.

With a quiet sigh, he shut everything down and got up. His body felt heavy—not from physical exhaustion this time, but something deeper.

He went to bed without thinking much more.

Darkness swallowed the room.

And within minutes—

He fell asleep.

---

Morning came too quickly.

Sunlight slipped through the curtains, landing directly on his face.

"…Tch."

Loki groaned and turned to the side, trying to ignore it.

Didn't work.

After a few seconds, he gave up and sat up slowly, rubbing his eyes.

"Morning already…"

His voice was hoarse, barely more than a whisper.

He stood up and stretched slightly before heading toward the kitchen.

The fridge door opened with a soft hum.

Inside—

Nothing.

Well, almost nothing.

A half-empty bottle of water.

Some random leftovers that had definitely expired.

And… that was about it.

"…Great."

He stared at it for a moment longer before closing the door.

"Guess I need to go shopping."

Not that he minded.

It gave him something to do.

---

A short time later, loki was already outside.

Dressed casually, hands in his pockets, he walked down the quiet street toward his car.

Living alone had its advantages.

No one to answer to.

No one to rely on.

And thanks to years of working—and some smart decisions—money wasn't really a problem for him.

He had enough.

More than enough, actually.

But money couldn't buy purpose.

Or meaning.

Or anything that actually mattered.

As he got into his car, he paused for a brief second.

That feeling again.

Subtle.

Faint.

Like something… watching.

His eyes moved to the rearview mirror.

Nothing.

Just the empty street behind him.

"…I'm imagining things."

He started the engine.

---

The store wasn't far.

As loki walked inside, the automatic doors slid open with a quiet hiss.

Bright lights.

Organized shelves.

Normal life.

He grabbed a basket and started walking through the aisles.

Milk.

Bread.

Something quick to eat.

Basic stuff.

As he moved through the store, he noticed a familiar face.

"Yo, loki!"

He looked up.

One of the guys from work.

"Hey."

"Didn't expect to see you here this early," the guy said with a grin.

"Had to buy food."

"Yeah, same." He laughed. "You coming out for a drink later?"

Loki shrugged slightly.

"Maybe."

"You always say that."

"…And?"

"Fair enough."

Another short pause.

"Work's killing me, man," the guy continued. "Thinking of quitting."

Loki glanced at him.

"And doing what?"

"…No idea."

"Then don't quit."

"…Yeah. You're probably right."

They both stood there for a moment.

Two people.

Same situation.

Different ways of dealing with it.

"Anyway," the guy said, stepping back, "see you around."

"Yeah."

And just like that—

Conversation over.

Loki continued shopping.

Nothing special.

Nothing memorable.

Just another part of the day.

---

Not long after, he was already back home.

Groceries placed on the counter.

Silence returned.

He unpacked everything slowly, placing items where they belonged.

Then he stopped.

"…It's still early."

He checked the time.

Yeah.

Way too early to just sit around again.

He leaned against the counter, thinking.

"What now…"

For a moment, nothing came to mind.

Then—

He grabbed his phone.

Scrolling.

Random videos.

News.

Useless stuff.

Until something caught his eye.

A national park.

Close by.

With a massive waterfall.

The video showed clear water crashing down from high cliffs, surrounded by nature. Peaceful. Quiet.

Different.

Loki stared at it for a second longer.

"…Why not."

---

The drive took a while.

The city slowly disappeared behind him, replaced by open roads and trees.

Less noise.

Less people.

More space to think.

Or… maybe not think at all.

His hands rested lightly on the steering wheel as he drove.

Then—

That feeling returned.

Stronger this time.

His eyes instinctively flicked to the rearview mirror.

And for a split second—

He saw something.

A figure.

Vague.

Unclear.

But its eyes—

They weren't normal.

They looked like… entire galaxies.

Endless space.

Stars.

Worlds within worlds.

Loki's breath hitched.

"…What the—"

He blinked.

And it was gone.

The mirror showed nothing but the empty road behind him.

Silence filled the car.

"…I need sleep."

He let out a short, dry laugh.

"Yeah… that's it."

He focused back on the road.

Still—

Something didn't feel right.

---

Eventually, he arrived.

The park was quiet.

Peaceful.

Almost untouched.

Loki stepped out of the car and took a deep breath.

Fresh air.

Different from the city.

Better.

He walked along the path, following the distant sound of water.

Step by step—

It grew louder.

Until finally—

He saw it.

The waterfall.

Water crashed down with immense force, creating a constant roar that echoed through the area. Sunlight reflected off the mist, creating a faint rainbow in the air.

It was… beautiful.

Loki sat down on a nearby rock, his eyes fixed on the falling water.

For the first time in a while—

He felt something.

Not happiness.

Not exactly peace.

But… something close.

"…Maybe I needed this."

He leaned forward slightly, resting his arms on his knees.

His thoughts drifted.

Life.

Work.

Everything.

"…Is this really it?"

No answer.

Just the sound of water.

Then—

A presence.

Right behind him.

Watching.

Listening.

Closer than ever before.

Loki froze.

His body reacted before his mind could.

Slowly—

He turned his head.

Nothing.

Just a small movement in the bushes.

A squirrel.

He stared at it for a second.

"…Seriously?"

The animal twitched slightly before running off.

Loki let out a breath.

"Yeah… I'm definitely losing it."

He turned back toward the waterfall.

Unaware—

That what he felt…

Was real.

And that something far beyond his understanding—

Was now closer than ever.
