Chapter 7 - When Legends Don’t Save You

The moment Riven moved—

The creature lunged.

There was no warning this time.

No pause.

No hesitation.

It crossed the distance between them in an instant, its body twisting unnaturally as it closed in. Riven barely had time to react, his body shifting on instinct alone as something sharp sliced past where his neck had been a second ago.

Too fast.

Way too fast.

He stumbled back, barely keeping his balance as his foot caught against a root. The creature didn't stop. It didn't need to.

It attacked again.

And again.

Each movement unpredictable. Each strike aimed to kill.

Riven's breathing broke.

His rhythm shattered.

This wasn't like before.

There was no running now.

No escape.

Only survival.

"Move—!"

He forced his body to respond, ducking under another strike, feeling the air split just above his head. His vision blurred for a second as panic tried to take over.

Too fast.

Too strong.

Too much—

His foot slipped.

Just slightly.

But enough.

The creature reacted instantly.

Its body twisted mid-motion, adjusting, correcting—

A killing blow.

Riven's eyes widened.

He couldn't dodge this.

Not in time.

Not—

The world froze.

Not slowed.

Stopped.

Completely.

Even the creature hung in place, inches away from him.

And then—

Darkness shifted.

Space cracked.

And something else stepped in.

"…Pathetic."

The voice was cold.

Sharp.

Cutting through everything.

Riven's breath caught.

A figure stood beside him.

Short black hair.

A blade resting against his shoulder.

Eyes that didn't hold hesitation.

Only judgment.

"…Levi Ackerman…"

The name surfaced without thought.

Levi didn't look at him.

Didn't acknowledge the recognition.

"You're about to die because you hesitated."

His tone didn't change.

No anger.

No concern.

Just fact.

Riven clenched his jaw.

"…I know."

Levi's gaze shifted slightly.

Toward the creature frozen in front of them.

"…Then stop acting like you don't."

The space behind them distorted again.

Another presence.

Calm.

Heavy.

Watching.

"…Fear clouds judgment."

A new voice.

Deeper.

Controlled.

Riven turned slightly.

A man stood there.

Cloaked in darkness, yet perfectly visible.

Eyes sharp.

Unshaken.

"…Itachi Uchiha…"

Riven's chest tightened.

"…Another one…"

Itachi's gaze met his.

Not harsh.

Not soft.

Just… knowing.

"You're not weak."

The words landed quietly.

"But you're lost."

Riven didn't respond.

Because—

That was true.

A third presence appeared.

Lighter.

But intense in a different way.

"…Oi."

The voice carried a strange energy.

Playful.

But serious underneath.

Riven turned.

Spiky hair.

Sharp eyes.

A stance that screamed battle.

"…Ichigo Kurosaki…"

Ichigo frowned slightly.

"You keep backing off, you're dead. Simple as that."

Riven's breathing steadied slightly.

Not because he felt safe.

But because—

Something inside him was changing.

"Then what do I do?" he asked.

This time—

All three looked at him.

Different expressions.

Same answer.

"Fight."

The world cracked.

The stillness shattered.

Time resumed.

The creature moved.

So did Riven.

But this time—

Something was different.

He didn't panic.

Didn't freeze.

Didn't think too much.

He moved.

Not perfectly.

Not skillfully.

But intentionally.

He stepped forward instead of back.

Just slightly.

Enough.

The creature's strike missed.

Barely.

But it missed.

Riven's heart pounded.

"…That's it."

Levi's voice echoed faintly.

"Keep moving."

Another strike came.

Riven shifted again.

Cleaner this time.

Less hesitation.

"…Good."

Ichigo's voice.

Closer now.

"Now don't stop."

The creature adjusted.

Faster.

More aggressive.

But Riven didn't break.

"…You see it now."

Itachi's voice.

Calm.

"Don't look at everything."

Riven's focus narrowed.

Not the whole body.

Not the chaos.

Just—

Movement.

Intent.

Direction.

Another attack.

He moved.

Not fast enough to dominate.

But enough to survive.

"…That's how it starts."

Sunraku's voice echoed faintly from memory.

And suddenly—

Everything aligned.

Not fully.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Riven stepped in.

Closer than before.

Riskier.

The creature reacted—

But this time—

Riven was already moving.

His body shifted just outside its strike range.

And for the first time—

He didn't just dodge.

He countered.

A simple movement.

A desperate one.

But real.

Contact.

The creature recoiled slightly.

Not injured.

But affected.

Riven's eyes widened.

"…I hit it."

A small thing.

A tiny thing.

But everything changed in that moment.

The voices faded.

The presence disappeared.

The forest returned fully.

And now—

It was just him.

And the creature.

No help.

No guidance.

No legends.

Only survival.

Riven exhaled slowly.

"…So this is what you meant."

No one answered.

But he didn't need one anymore.

The creature moved again.

Faster.

Deadlier.

And Riven—

Stepped forward.

This time—

By his own will. 🔥
