Synopsis
--- In a world where power is defined by Circles and Stars, Astraeus Academy stands as the empire’s ultimate proving ground—where nobles reign, and the weak are forgotten. Aether, a quiet orphan known across the empire as a once-in-a-generation prodigy, enters the academy carrying expectations… only to be judged as nothing more than a failure. While others see a second-circle mage unworthy of his reputation, no one realizes the truth—his understanding of magic doesn’t follow the rules of the world itself. Beside him stands Agumi Valerith, heir to a ducal house and a rising star among swordsmen, whose strength shines as brightly as her unfiltered, natural spirit. Where Aether is calm and unreadable, she is instinct and fire—and somehow, despite their differences, their paths begin to intertwine. As rivalry, power struggles, and hidden tensions unfold within the academy, something far greater lingers beneath the surface—fragments of a life that shouldn’t exist, and a truth that connects them beyond this world. Because in a world where nine circles define the limits of humanity… someone is about to prove there was never a limit to begin with.

Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Prodigy They Doubt

Astraeus Academy did not nurture talent. It measured it.

The grand hall pulsed with quiet tension—nobles standing tall in polished uniforms, commoners lingering at the edges, their presence tolerated but never truly accepted. Above them, intricate sigils glowed faintly across the ceiling, ancient magic watching in silence.

At the center stood the pillar.

Cold. Absolute. Unforgiving.

"Step forward when your name is called."

Seraphine Drell's voice cut cleanly through the noise. "Your worth will be determined by your circle."

No one spoke after that.

Because everyone understood.

This was where their place in the world would be decided.

"Agumi Valerith."

A subtle shift moved through the crowd.

Not loud—but heavy.

She stepped forward without hesitation, one hand resting lazily at her side as if this were nothing more than routine. Her expression held no tension, no anticipation—only mild impatience.

"…finally."

Her palm met the pillar.

For a brief moment, nothing happened.

Then—

light surged.

Clear. Stable. Strong.

"Fourth Circle."

Whispers spread instantly.

"As expected of House Valerith…"

"She's already at that level?"

Agumi stared at the glow for a second, then tilted her head.

"…that's it?"

Someone nearby stiffened. "That's already high—"

She stepped back with a small shrug. "…feels normal."

And just like that, she was done.

No pride. No performance.

Just fact.

"Aether."

This time, the silence was different.

Quieter.

Sharper.

"They're calling him already…"

"The prodigy…"

"I heard he mastered advanced theory before entering…"

"Then why is his circle so low?"

Expectation.

Doubt.

Curiosity.

All of it settled onto him at once.

Aether walked forward.

Calm. Measured. Unaffected.

There was nothing overwhelming about his presence—no visible pressure, no arrogance. And yet, something about him felt… still. As if the noise of the world simply didn't reach him.

He placed his hand on the pillar.

The hall held its breath.

Waiting.

A faint glow appeared.

Weak.

Unsteady.

Then it stopped.

"…Second Circle."

For a moment—

nothing.

Then laughter broke the silence.

"That's it?"

"This is the prodigy?"

"Second Circle? That's barely anything."

Agumi frowned slightly, looking at him again.

"…seriously?"

Aether withdrew his hand.

"…yes."

No frustration. No embarrassment.

Just a simple answer.

From above, unseen by most—

Headmaster Arcturus Vale watched.

His gaze did not waver.

"…interesting."

The evaluation continued, but the atmosphere had shifted. Conversations grew sharper, quieter—centered around a single contradiction.

A prodigy… with nothing to show.

Agumi moved closer once the crowd shifted.

"They said you were a prodigy."

"They did."

She studied him for a moment, eyes narrowing slightly.

"…this doesn't match."

"It doesn't need to."

A pause.

She exhaled lightly. "…you're not even bothered."

"Should I be?"

"…a little."

"I'm not."

She stared at him, then shook her head.

"…you're weird."

"I know."

Above them, a group of nobles observed with open disdain.

Leon Draven stepped forward slightly, his gaze fixed on Aether.

"…that's the one?"

Disappointment flickered across his face.

"…looks like a mistake."

"Ranks determine everything within the academy."

Seraphine's voice echoed once more.

"Authority. Resources. Opportunity."

A brief pause.

"Higher-ranked students may challenge those below them."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"Prove your place… or remain beneath others."

The meaning was clear.

This was not a school.

It was a hierarchy.

Agumi crossed her arms, glancing sideways at Aether.

"…so people are going to come after you."

"Probably."

"…because of your rank."

"And reputation."

She nodded once.

"…makes sense."

Then, after a beat—

"…don't lose too easily."

Aether glanced at her.

"I won't."

A faint smirk tugged at her lips.

"…good."

For a brief moment, everything settled.

Then—

Aether's vision flickered.

A classroom.

Soft sunlight through a window.

A voice—familiar.

"…you're overthinking again."

His eyes sharpened.

The image vanished instantly.

Gone.

Like it had never existed.

"…Aether?"

Agumi stood in front of him now, watching.

"You stopped."

"…nothing."

She didn't look convinced.

"…you sure?"

"Yes."

A pause.

Then she shrugged.

"…alright."

But her gaze lingered a second longer than necessary.

Above—

Arcturus Vale's expression didn't change.

But his attention remained fixed.

"…Second Circle," he murmured.

"…and yet…"

Something about Aether didn't align.

Not weakness.

Not failure.

Something else.

Something the system couldn't measure.
