Caleb had been awake since before dawn.
Ta1lorath's second message was still open in the overlay. He had read it four times since midnight. Same source, three queries across six days. The pattern was not cartel grade, too loose for that, but it was consistent.
He closed the message and turned it over in his head.
The clip itself was manageable enough. Thirty-one seconds of camera wobble, no face visible, and no identifying marks anywhere in the frame. Someone with more familiarity in engineering might have raised a flag, but the group that possessed that kind of knowledge was vanishingly small.
A dead zone like this would not let an anonymous clip linger for too long.
The cashout routing was different. That meant someone was building a picture, though not a full picture yet. Three queries inside six days looked more like a process than an accident. If they put it together, they were not coming to negotiate. They would simply show up and take it.
This was not random. Not scavengers, not forum drift. Someone out there knew something and kept looking. That was worse than random.
If someone like that decided to act on what they found, they would not come to negotiate.
They would claim the territory.
His structures were the thing worth taking, which made them the thing worth hitting.
His thought was interrupted when he received a new DM from ta1lorath.
[ta1lorath: heyyy]
Caleb instantly recognized the tone. They wanted to do something else with him.
[Wyd]
Ta1lorath responded nearly instantly, likely having the message already typed out and waiting for a response.
[ta1lorath: do u know anything about low grade essence crystals?]
[I'm still learning about this game every day tbh]
[ta1lorath: there's a thin supply and no real demand. it's an easy play at making money if we're careful.]
[What would you want me to do]
[ta1lorath: i'll buy them with proxies, you just have to hold them for me. you won't have to pay any capital. you get 40% of everything for being my mule]
[Fine by me]
[ta1lorath: ur the best. dont tell anyone. even that weird old dude you talk with]
[Wasn't going to]
He closed out of the DM window when another notification fired across the screen.
[TRAIT UNLOCKED: RUIN LATTICE]
[PASSIVE: DETONATION CHAIN]
[TRIGGER: FORGED STRUCTURE DESTRUCTION]
[EFFECT: DESTROYED STRUCTURE DETONATES FOR 25% OF MAXIMUM STORED ESSENCE AS AREA BURST]
[RADIUS: 8M FROM STRUCTURE FOOTPRINT]
Three structures were demolished yesterday. The system had been watching.
He had spent the morning thinking through what happens when structures get destroyed.
He wrote it down, filed the notation under passive yield modifiers, and pulled up the Tier 2 requirements.
Harlan had already identified three new points of access before sunrise. The last transmission packet from Ta1lorath suggested that traffic associated with the cartel was still being concentrated in the outlying sectors and at least four days away from District 13.
All of that was the Tier 1 picture.
He pulled the skill tree and looked at the Structural Evolution branch. Tier 2 had several unlock conditions.
[Forge Sensitivity threshold], minimum structure count, and material certification.
The material certification was achievable. The structure count had been accidentally hit two days ago.
The sensitivity threshold was the variable he could not read directly, which meant he was estimating it off yield curves and reaction times.
His estimate said he was not there yet. The system-recommended forge load ceiling was capped at 65% until the sensitivity threshold cleared.
He thought about the four-day window. Then he loaded the forge.
[82 DAYS]
The orange warning fired at seventy-one percent.
He kept cranking.
The system pushed a secondary prompt at eighty-two percent. Red text layered on top of itself.
[RECOMMENDATION: STOP]
[RISKS FLAGGED: STRUCTURE VOLATILITY, ESSENCE BLEED, POTENTIAL CASCADE]
Caleb read it and ignored the warning. Something in the warning language read like the system was already expecting to be ignored.
The forge topped out at ninety-four percent. Its frame was vibrating under his grip, essence strands pulling tight and unraveling at the ends, the bind cycle skipping with an irregularity he had not felt before. It was not breaking, but it was close enough to it that the distance felt negotiable.
He was wrong about that.
At ninety-seven percent, the two outer choke structures did not collapse. They detonated.
[CATACLYSM REVOLT: MINOR]
[OVERLOAD THRESHOLD EXCEEDED]
[STRUCTURAL CASCADE: 2 STRUCTURES DESTROYED]
[RUIN LATTICE: CHAIN DETONATION ACTIVE]
The chain detonated out of the southwest frame as a double pulse. Each unit detonated in a lattice burst. The burst struck the ferrocrete and created a pressure wave that formed a very rough circle of fifteen-meter diameter on the plaza surface. The kill corridor was intact, uphill of the barricades' line, and braced against the east wall. The two new structures were destroyed.
[ESSENCE DEBUFF: -40% YIELD (DURATION: 30 MINUTES)]
He was reading the debuff line when the plaza stopped being quiet.
A Ruin Colossus came out of the crater.
There was no billboard head and no corporate loop. The Ruinwardens ran heavily and deliberately. This thing ran like something had removed the mass ceiling entirely. It stood at hip height, roughly humanoid, built from compressed rubble and raw lattice framework fused into a chassis at every joint. It crossed twenty meters before Caleb had the Rebar Club off his back.
The first strike came in low and wide. He got the Club up in time and took the force off his forearm instead of his chest.
Three seconds.
He had the Ruin Lattice. The Colossus was running on packed essence. The blast zones were still active in the crater, flames throwing heat in overlapping rings.
That was the play.
He stepped into the crater.
The footing was bad between uneven debris heaps and hot rebar clusters that he nearly went through. He caught his left foot on a shard and lost two steps of lead distance. The Colossus's attack did not hit him, yet he still took proximity damage from the blast.
Seventy-four percent HP.
He kept running.
He had built both structures himself. He knew the footprint lines. He knew where the burst radius ended. He cut through the eastern edge of the first zone.
The Colossus followed.
The detonation was a crack and pressure report that hit his avatar's ears and his body at the same time; the haptic suit reading the area burst as blunt force across his shoulder and back.
The Colossus took a shot center mass.
It slowed.
Not enough.
The chain fired again. Double burst radius, the two fields overlapping at the edges. The Colossus staggered. It had lost something on its left side, the lattice framework fractured, and that half of the chassis was moving wrong.
He hit the shoulder joint. Same technique as the Ruinwardens. Precision strike at the seam line, redirect the aggro vector, and fracture the exoskeleton. On the Ruinwardens it produced a stumble and an aggro redirect. On the Colossus it produced a crack like a cable snapping under load, the joint splitting cleanly and the left side losing motor function.
He hit it again. Same spot.
The Colossus went down.
[RUIN COLOSSUS DEFEATED]
[ESSENCE HARVEST: AVAILABLE]
He stared at the notification.
His first solo elite kill. No backup. Just the forge and himself. That felt better than any gold or experience points.
He sat down on the crater floor and let the stamina bar do its job.
Then he pulled the spawn log.
He expected a natural spawn event. A territory pressure threshold, a patrol escalation, something the zone generated on a timer. What he got was different.
[SPAWN TYPE: SYSTEM RESPONSE]
[TRIGGER EVENT: OVERLOAD THRESHOLD BREACH]
[CLASSIFICATION: CATACLYSM REVOLT (MINOR)]
[ZONE COMPENSATION PROTOCOL: ACTIVE]
He read it once. Then again.
The Colossus was not a patrol. It was not ambient. It was a reaction. The Hollows had registered his overload as a destabilization attempt and generated a punitive measure calibrated to the severity.
The Hollows had reaction logic. It responded to destabilization proportionally. Systems that did that had rules.
Rules could be read.
The zone was not trying to kill him. It was testing him.
He wrote it down and kept moving.
one reaction logic confirmed. cataclysmic revolt scales with breach severity. ,inor breach, minor revolt. check the ceiling before the next push.
The repairs took two hours. He rebuilt both southwestern structures from reclaimed material and the Colossus harvest; placed them at the adjusted angle; and ran the link test.
The orange thread engaged on the first attempt.
Two structures were now gone, which now let him build them at better angles. He had come out ahead all things considered. Most of all, he now knew how the Hollows responded to someone pushing too hard.
[81 DAYS]
He was logging the fight data when the plaza edge distorted.
No patrol signature. No settlement drift. The ferrocrete at the east corner bulged once, and two blocks in front of Caleb flickered in and out of existence despite being fully rendered previously.
But nothing was moving.
Nothing had moved
He stood very still and looked at the corner.
"Ves... per?" Caleb could barely speak, his voice just louder than a whisper. His knees began to shake and he could feel his heart begin to beat faster than it should be.
Whatever had passed through was not her presence. It was proximity.
He pulled up his log entry. It still had notes from the Colossus fight.
The insertion pointer blinked repeatedly on that line for a long time until finally he closed the log entry and game entirely.
[Vesper Protocol: 0.6% Erosion]
[HIDDEN LOG: SYSTEM COMPENSATION INITIATED]
