Chapter 13: The Stillness Strikes
---
The Slum Ring was dark before dawn.
Ren didn't sleep. He lay on his straw bed, staring at the ceiling, listening to the drip of water from a leak he had patched three times. His hand rested on Old Sol's arrowhead.
Today.
He sat up. Opened his system screen.
Level: 25. XP: 55/550. JC: 1,606. Lifespan remaining: 99 years.
Inventory: Poisonthorn arrows (2), healing potions (3), Heartleaf bandages (4).
Unseen Presence: Ready.
He closed the screen. Stood up. His body was calm. His hands were steady.
He walked to the door. The mist was thick—Breathing Fog, heavy and wet. He pulled his collar up and stepped outside.
The mud paths were empty. The children were asleep. The old men were dreaming.
Ren walked toward the Root Ruins gate.
---
Dorian was waiting at the edge of the ruins.
He stood in the shadow of a fallen pillar, his bow slung across his back, his gray hair pulled tight. He looked up when Ren approached.
"You're early," Dorian said.
"The Vine King won't wait."
"No. It won't." Dorian fell into step beside Ren. "Remember. I'm backup. I won't interfere unless you're dying."
"I won't die."
"Good. Then I won't interfere."
They walked in silence.
---
The Root Ruins were darker than usual.
The mist had seeped into the hollows and crevices, turning the pillars into ghostly shapes. Ren moved through the ruins like a shadow—quiet, careful, invisible.
Unseen Presence: Active.
His heartbeat slowed. His breath quieted. His body cooled.
Dorian followed at a distance, his footsteps silent on the wet ground.
They reached the Vine King's territory. The trees were dead. The vines were withered. The ground was bare.
Ren stopped at the edge of the hollow.
"She's there," he whispered.
The Vine King was coiled around her heart-wood, her vines wrapped tight, her root-mouth closed. The amber light pulsed weakly—fading, but still alive.
"The crack," Dorian whispered. "Can you see it?"
Ren squinted. The crack was smaller than before—almost sealed. A thin line of darkness in the center of the heart-wood.
Two days left. Maybe less.
"I see it."
"Can you hit it?"
Ren notched a Poisonthorn arrow. "I have to."
---
The west crevice was narrow.
Ren squeezed through the gap in the stone, his shoulders scraping against the walls. The passage was dark—no light, no sound, just the smell of old blood and decay.
Unseen Presence: Holding.
He moved deeper. The crevice opened into a small chamber behind the heart-wood. Ren could see the back of the Vine King's mass—vines thicker than his arm, coiled around the pulsing core.
The crack was directly ahead. Ten feet away.
Ten feet. Two seconds. One arrow.
Ren notched his first Poisonthorn arrow.
He waited.
The Vine King's vines pulsed. One. Two. Three.
Contraction.
The heart-wood was exposed.
Ren fired.
The arrow flew straight—silent, fast, true.
It struck the crack.
The Vine King screamed.
Vines exploded outward. Ren dove behind a root, covering his head. The vines whipped past him—close enough to feel the wind.
One hit. Need more.
He notched his second Poisonthorn arrow.
The Vine King was thrashing now. Her vines were everywhere—slamming into the walls, cracking the stone, tearing the roots from the ground.
Wait. Wait. Wait.
The vines pulsed. One. Two. Three.
Contraction.
The heart-wood was exposed—but the crack was smaller. The first arrow had partially sealed it.
Ren fired.
The second arrow struck the crack. Deeper.
The Vine King's scream changed—higher, more desperate. The amber light flickered.
Ren notched his last Poisonthorn arrow.
The vines were slowing. The poison was working. But the heart-wood was still protected—the crack was almost gone.
One more shot. One more chance.
Ren stepped out from behind the root.
The Vine King's root-mouth turned toward him.
She sees me.
Ren fired.
The third arrow flew straight—into the crack, through the crack, into the heart of the heart-wood.
The Vine King went still.
The amber light died.
The vines fell limp.
Ren stood in the chamber, breathing hard, his heart pounding in his ears.
System notification.

Lifespan updated: +20 years (levels 26-28). Total lifespan: 140 years. Remaining: 119 years (age 21).
Ren stared at the notification.
Six thousand six hundred six Jungle Coins.
I did it.
He pulled his arrows from the heart-wood. Two were damaged. One was still usable.
He stored them in his quiver.
Then he sat down against the wall and waited for his heart to slow.
---
Dorian emerged from the shadows.
He looked at the Vine King's corpse. Then at Ren. Then back at the corpse.
"You killed it."
"Yes."
"Alone."
"Yes."
"With three arrows."
"Three Poisonthorn arrows."
Dorian shook his head. "Old Sol would be proud."
Ren touched the arrowhead on his belt. "I hope so."
---
The walk back to camp was slow.
Ren carried the Vine King's heart-wood—smaller than he expected, but heavy, pulsing with faint amber light. Dorian carried nothing. He walked beside Ren in silence.
Rin was waiting at the camp.
She looked at the heart-wood. Then at Ren.
"You did it."
"Yes."
"Alone."
"With Dorian watching."
"That's still alone." Rin nodded. "Good. Now sit. You look like you're about to fall over."
Ren sat.
---
The campfire was warm.
Ren drank Heartleaf tea. His hands were shaking—not from fear, from exhaustion. His body was running on adrenaline and spite.
"Six thousand six hundred coins," he said quietly.
Rin raised an eyebrow. "That's a lot."
"It's ten percent of my goal."
"Ten percent from one hunt. That's good."
Ren nodded. "I need nine more Crown Beasts."
Dorian laughed. "Nine more? You're planning to kill all seven?"
"Seven Crown Beasts. Six more to go."
"Six? You've killed the Vine King. That's one."
"The Thorn Walker wasn't a Crown Beast?"
"No. Thorn Walkers are rare, but not Crown. Crown Beasts are the heart of each layer." Dorian leaned forward. "There are seven. The Vine King is the weakest."
Ren looked at him. "What's the strongest?"
"The Jungle Heart. No one has ever killed it."
Ren set down his cup. "Then I'll be the first."
---
The sun was setting when Kite, Mica, and Finn arrived.
They had heard the news—the whole guild had heard. A solo Crown Beast kill. Level eighty-five. By a level twenty-five hunter.
"Ren!" Kite shouted, running toward the camp. "You killed it!"
"Yes."
"Alone!"
"Yes."
"You're insane!"
"Probably."
Mica was smiling. Finn was crying. They surrounded him, patting his back, shaking his shoulders.
Ren endured it.
"Six thousand coins," Kite said. "You're rich!"
"I'm less poor."
"That's the same thing!"
Rin laughed. It was a dry, rasping sound. "Leave him alone. He needs to rest."
The three archers stepped back. But they were still grinning.
---
The walk back to the Slum Ring was cold.
The mist had thickened—Breathing Fog, heavy and damp. Ren walked slowly, carefully, his footsteps silent on the wet ground.
Unseen Presence: Active.
His heartbeat slowed. His breath quieted.
He reached his room. The roof was dry. The straw bed was damp. The wooden box under the bed held 1,606 JC—now 6,606.
Ren sat on the bed. Opened his system screen.
Level: 28. XP: 95/580.
Jungle Coins: 6,606.
Lifespan remaining: 119 years.
Soulbound: Old Sol's arrowhead, Unseen Presence, Vine King's Heart-Core (+5% stealth).
He closed the screen.
Six thousand six hundred six coins. Sixty-five thousand to go.
Progress: 10.2%.
He lay down. The roof didn't leak.
The jungle breathed outside his window.
Ren closed his eyes.
I'm coming for you, Fog Drinker.
