Chapter 25 - First Rival

Rain tapped softly against the broken glass above the abandoned transit station, each drop echoing through the hollow underground like a countdown.

Kai stood near the edge of the empty platform, arms folded tightly across his chest, staring at the flickering emergency lights embedded in the walls. The city above was alive with panic—broadcast warnings, patrol drones, Null Agents sweeping districts for newly awakened Rank C users.

But down here, beneath the ruined tracks and forgotten tunnels, there was only silence.

And waiting.

Lira leaned against a rusted support beam nearby, one boot pressed against the metal, arms crossed. Her expression was unreadable as always.

She had saved his life.

Twice.

And somehow, Kai still didn't know if he trusted her.

"You're staring too hard," she said without looking at him.

"I'm thinking."

"That usually looks less dramatic."

Kai exhaled sharply. "You said Rank C users were being detained because they're evolving too fast. You said most people lose their minds trying to advance."

"They do."

"But I didn't."

Lira finally looked at him, her pale eyes sharp in the dim light.

"No," she said. "You didn't."

Eli stirred in the back of Kai's mind like static waking from sleep.

Because you're not normal.

Kai ignored him.

He stepped closer to Lira. "Then tell me what I am."

For the first time since they'd met, hesitation crossed her face.

That scared him more than any answer could.

"You're compatible," she said quietly.

"With what?"

"With the deeper Echo layers. With rank ascension. With synchronization beyond normal human tolerance."

Kai frowned. "That sounds like a fancy way of saying I'm a lab rat."

"It means," Lira said, pushing off the beam, "that when people like us sync, we borrow skills. Borrow memories. Borrow instincts."

She pointed at him.

"But you? You absorb."

The word sat heavily between them.

Kai remembered the fights. The reflexes that weren't his. The knowledge he shouldn't have. The way Eli's thoughts sometimes felt less like another voice and more like his own.

"No one should be able to do that," Lira continued. "Rank C is called Merge for a reason. It's supposed to be temporary. Controlled. But you…"

She stepped closer.

"You're turning it permanent."

A cold wave passed through him.

"That's impossible."

"Exactly."

Eli laughed bitterly inside his head.

See? I told you. You're special. Congratulations. We're probably doomed.

Kai rubbed his temple.

"Helpful."

Always.

Lira watched him carefully.

"He talks more now, doesn't he?"

Kai froze.

"You can tell?"

"I can feel it."

Her voice lowered.

"And he's getting stronger."

Before Kai could respond, a sound cut through the station.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Not hiding.

Lira's entire posture changed instantly.

Danger.

She moved in front of Kai.

"Stay behind me."

Kai frowned. "You know who it is?"

Her jaw tightened.

"I was hoping I was wrong."

From the darkness at the far end of the platform, a figure emerged.

Tall.

Relaxed.

Hands in the pockets of a long black coat.

He walked like the station belonged to him.

Like the city belonged to him.

His dark hair was swept carelessly back, and a faint smile rested on his face—the kind that made people trust him before they realized they shouldn't.

He looked young.

Too young for the weight in his eyes.

When he stepped beneath the flickering light, Kai felt it immediately.

Pressure.

Not physical.

Mental.

Like invisible fingers pressing against the inside of his skull.

Eli's voice snapped sharp.

Run.

Kai stiffened.

Lira's expression had turned to ice.

"Dante."

The man smiled wider.

"Lira. Still dramatic, I see."

His gaze shifted to Kai.

And lingered.

Interest.

Recognition.

Danger.

"So," Dante said softly, "this is him."

Kai forced himself not to step back.

"Do I know you?"

Dante chuckled.

"Not yet. But I know you."

He approached slowly, every step deliberate.

"Kai Adebayo. Rank C anomaly. Survived system collapse. Multiple skill blending. Unregistered compatibility spike."

He tilted his head.

"You've been very hard to ignore."

Kai's fists tightened.

"Who are you?"

Lira answered before Dante could.

"Rank A."

The station seemed to get colder.

Kai stared.

Rank A.

He had barely survived becoming Rank C.

Lira was Rank B and terrifying enough.

Rank A felt less like a person and more like a natural disaster.

Dante gave a mock bow.

"Charmed."

Kai forced calm into his voice.

"What do you want?"

Dante smiled.

"Curiosity."

"Try lying better."

That made Dante laugh—genuinely this time.

"Oh, I like him."

His eyes sharpened.

"But also honesty? Fine. I'm here because people like you become problems."

He gestured lightly.

"Most Rank C users burn out. Collapse. Get caught. Die. You, however…"

His gaze darkened.

"You keep surviving."

Eli's voice was tight.

He's checking if you're worth killing.

Kai swallowed.

"And if I am?"

Dante shrugged.

"Then I solve the problem early."

Lira stepped forward.

"You'll have to go through me."

Dante sighed like she'd interrupted a pleasant dinner.

"Lira, you always make things personal."

"Because you make people into tools."

"Efficiency," he corrected.

Kai frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Dante looked at him, almost amused.

"You really don't know."

He raised one hand slowly.

"I don't borrow minds, Kai."

The pressure in the station intensified.

"I take control of them."

Kai's blood ran cold.

Forced synchronization.

Not shared.

Not borrowed.

Possession.

Dante smiled softly.

"Consent is such an overrated concept."

Lira moved instantly.

She lunged.

Three versions of her split from the motion—her consciousness dividing across multiple bodies, each attacking from a different angle.

Kai barely tracked it.

But Dante—

Dante sighed.

And moved once.

Fast.

Too fast.

One hand caught the first Lira by the throat.

A turn of his body sent the second crashing into a pillar.

The third vanished as the split broke under strain.

The real Lira hit the ground hard, coughing.

Kai stared in shock.

He hadn't even seen the exchange clearly.

Dante released her and adjusted his sleeve.

"Please. I'm trying to have a conversation."

Kai stepped forward instinctively.

Bad idea.

The pressure slammed into him.

His vision blurred.

For one horrifying second, he felt his own body hesitate—his hand twitching without permission.

Dante's voice softened.

"Interesting."

Kai fought against it, every muscle rigid.

It felt like hands reaching into his nervous system.

Pulling strings.

Trying to find the hooks.

Eli roared inside him.

NO.

Something snapped.

The pressure shattered.

Kai stumbled back, gasping.

Dante's expression changed.

For the first time—

surprise.

"Well," he said quietly.

"There it is."

Lira pushed herself up, breathing hard.

"Leave. Now."

But Dante was no longer looking at her.

Only Kai.

Like a scientist staring at a phenomenon he wanted to dissect.

"You resisted."

Kai's heart pounded.

"Yeah. Get used to disappointment."

Dante smiled faintly.

"No. I don't think I will."

He stepped closer.

"Do you know how rare that is? Most people fold instantly. Rank doesn't matter. Fear does."

His voice dropped.

"But you have someone in there helping you push back."

Silence.

Kai froze.

Dante's eyes sharpened.

"Ah," he said.

"So I was right."

Eli whispered:

He can feel me.

Kai forced himself steady.

"You talk too much."

Dante laughed softly.

"And you hide too little."

He took a slow step back.

"I could kill you tonight. It wouldn't even be difficult."

Lira tensed.

Kai prepared to move.

But Dante only smiled.

"Unfortunately, I'm patient."

He turned toward the stairs leading back to the city.

"Potential is more interesting than corpses."

Kai called after him.

"So what—this is a warning?"

Dante paused.

Without turning, he said:

"No. This is professional courtesy."

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

The station stayed silent for several seconds.

Kai's breathing sounded too loud.

Finally, Lira muttered a curse under her breath.

"That went badly."

Kai stared at the empty stairs.

"Who is he really?"

She looked exhausted.

"Someone the Null Agents fear. Someone independent enough that even the government avoids direct conflict."

She wiped blood from the corner of her mouth.

"He builds networks. Controls information. Controls people. Entire districts answer to him and don't even realize it."

Kai frowned.

"Why?"

"Because power is easier when people think it was their idea."

Eli's voice was grim.

I know him.

Kai stiffened internally.

What?

A pause.

Longer than usual.

Then:

Before I died… I was investigating him.

Kai's pulse quickened.

You never mentioned that.

Because I was trying to remember.

Eli sounded distant.

And because some memories are safer buried.

Kai turned away from Lira, pretending to check the tunnel.

What did he do?

Eli answered quietly.

He helped the overwrite project happen.

The words hit like ice.

The same project that copied minds.

Replaced minds.

Killed Eli.

Kai swallowed hard.

And Lira?

Silence.

Then:

She was there too.

Kai's stomach dropped.

Eli's voice was barely a whisper now.

She helped kill me.

The world seemed to stop.

Rain.

Lights.

Breathing.

Everything distant.

Kai turned slowly toward Lira.

She was watching him.

And in her expression—

for the first time—

fear.

Not of Dante.

Of this moment.

Kai's voice came out low.

"What happened to Eli?"

Lira said nothing.

His hands trembled.

"What did you do?"

She took one step forward.

"Kai—"

"Don't."

The word cracked like glass.

Inside him, Eli was silent.

Too silent.

Kai stared at the girl who had saved him.

Protected him.

Lied to him.

And suddenly, he didn't know which version of her was real.

The station felt colder than before.

Above them, somewhere far away, the city kept moving.

But underground, between ghosts and half-truths, something had broken.

And Kai realized the real danger wasn't Dante.

It was the people standing closest to him.

Lira's voice was barely audible.

"If I tell you the truth… you may never forgive me."

Kai met her eyes.

Right now, he wasn't sure he wanted to.
