Chapter 4: Fortification
The morning air felt heavier than before.
Kael stood near the lake, staring at his reflection in the still water. The boy who had once lived a quiet life in the mountains was gone.
In his place—
Someone forced to adapt.
Someone who couldn't afford hesitation.
"…No more wasting time," he murmured.
He turned toward his base, his expression steady.
"Today… I build."
---
The platform he had made the previous day was barely enough to rest on. It creaked faintly under his weight, the uneven structure reminding him how fragile his situation still was.
"…First priority," he said quietly. "Shelter."
Kael began gathering materials again.
This time, his movements were faster.
More efficient.
He selected longer branches, stronger ones, testing each piece before dragging it back toward the tree. The forest floor was scattered with usable debris, and now he could identify what he needed at a glance.
"Link."
The thread of energy responded instantly.
The branches fused more smoothly than before, the joints stronger, more stable.
Kael paused briefly, observing.
"…It's easier now."
A faint notification flickered.
---
Linking Proficiency Increased
---
He continued.
Piece by piece, he constructed a frame above his platform. Angled branches formed the skeleton of a roof, sloping slightly to one side.
Then came the layering.
Leaves.
Twigs.
Smaller branches.
Using Linking, he reinforced everything, tightening the structure until it felt solid.
Not perfect.
But protective.
Kael stepped back, wiping sweat from his forehead.
"…Good."
---
Next—
Defense.
Kael's eyes hardened slightly.
"The forest won't stay quiet forever."
He moved around the clearing, scanning the terrain carefully.
"…I need warning… and delay."
He began carving sharpened stakes using stone edges. The process was slow, but he improved with each attempt.
Once done, he used Linking to bind them into clusters.
Spike traps.
He dug shallow pits near the edges of the clearing, placing the spikes inside and covering them with leaves and loose dirt.
"Not enough to kill," he muttered. "But enough to stop them."
Then he worked on noise traps.
Using vines, he tied small stones together and suspended them between trees.
"If anything passes through…"
He nudged one lightly.
The faint clinking echoed.
"…I'll hear it."
---
Kael stood still for a moment, observing the setup.
For the first time—
The clearing didn't feel completely exposed.
---
Then his gaze shifted to his spear.
"…Still limited."
Close range.
Risky.
He needed distance.
"A bow…"
Kael searched carefully through the forest, selecting a flexible branch. It took time to find one that bent without breaking.
"This should work…"
He used thin vines as string, binding them tightly to both ends.
"Link."
The connection reinforced instantly.
The branch bent—
Held.
A bow.
Kael tested the tension slowly.
"…Good enough."
Next came arrows.
Straight sticks.
Sharpened tips.
Some reinforced with small stone fragments.
Using Linking, he strengthened their structure.
After multiple attempts, he created a small bundle.
Kael nocked an arrow.
Pulled.
Released.
The arrow flew forward—
Striking a tree trunk with a dull thud.
Not perfect.
But usable.
"…I'll improve."
---
Hours passed.
The sun climbed higher, though its light still felt unnatural in this broken world.
Kael's movements grew smoother, more confident.
Then—
A notification appeared.
---
Skill Upgraded: Linking → Level 2
---
Linking (Level 2):
Increased stability and strength
Reduced energy consumption
Improved precision
---
Kael exhaled, a faint smile appearing.
"…Finally."
He picked up two branches.
"Link."
They fused instantly—clean, seamless.
"…This changes everything."
---
By midday, Kael's stomach growled.
He paused.
"…Right. Food."
---
He started with the fish.
Kneeling by the lake, Kael cleaned it carefully using a sharp stone. It wasn't pleasant work, but he forced himself to focus.
"Survival," he muttered.
After cleaning it, he gathered dry wood and small twigs.
Starting a fire proved harder than expected.
He struck stones together repeatedly.
Again.
Again.
His hands grew sore.
"…Come on…"
Finally—
A spark caught.
A small flame flickered.
Kael quickly fed it dry leaves, then twigs.
The fire grew slowly.
"…Yes."
Relief washed over him.
He placed the fish on a sharpened stick and held it over the fire.
The smell came gradually.
Cooked.
Real.
Kael swallowed.
"…Food."
He waited patiently this time, turning it slowly.
When it was ready, he took a bite.
Hot.
Simple.
But satisfying.
"…Better than nothing."
A faint sense of strength returned to his body.
---
After eating, Kael didn't stop.
"I need more."
He moved into the forest again, gathering fruits, mushrooms, and roots.
This time—
He was faster.
More precise.
Nature Sense guided him subtly, warning him away from certain plants while drawing his attention toward others.
"…I can feel the difference," he whispered.
He collected safer fruits, testing small portions first.
Mushrooms were trickier, but he avoided those with strange patterns or strong odors.
Roots required effort, but they were worth it.
By the time he returned, he had a small supply.
---
Kael decided to prepare more food.
He roasted some roots over the fire, their outer layer blackening slightly before softening inside.
The fruits he cleaned with lake water.
Some he ate raw.
Others he saved.
"…This should last," he said quietly.
Not luxury.
But survival.
---
As the afternoon passed, another notification appeared:
---
Experience Increased: 5 / 10
---
Kael stared at it briefly.
"Halfway…"
His grip tightened slightly.
"Still not enough."
---
He stood and looked around his clearing.
A raised platform.
A roof.
Hidden traps.
A bow and arrows.
A spear.
A small food supply.
A fire pit.
It wasn't much.
But compared to yesterday—
It was everything.
---
The sky slowly began to darken.
Kael added more wood to the fire, ensuring it would last through the night.
His senses remained sharp.
Always alert.
"…Tonight won't be as quiet," he muttered.
He picked up his bow this time, keeping the spear nearby.
The forest beyond the clearing felt alive.
Watching.
Waiting.
Kael sat beneath his shelter, the firelight flickering across his face.
"…Six days left."
The words felt heavier now.
But so did his resolve.
"I'm not dying here."
The fire crackled softly.
The sky darkened further.
And somewhere in the distance—
Something moved.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
"…Let them come."
