Chapter 12 - The Shadow Play

~The Next Morning~

The sun had barely risen over the Ora and Olio skyline when Elena was already buried in work. The rhythmic clicking of her keyboard was interrupted by the sound of the office door swinging open. Chloe marched in, panting heavily, her face flushed as if she had run a marathon.

"Ma'am... I have... important news," Chloe managed to say, catching her breath.

Elena looked up, her focus shifting instantly. "Yes, Chloe? What is it?"

"Ma'am, you know about the Global Nexus Group, right?"

"Hmm, who doesn't?" Elena leaned back, tapping her pen. "They are a massive international powerhouse. Every year, they choose a specific country to host their 'Market Reach Challenge.' Their primary goal is to collaborate with a 'Rising Star' company to prove they support fresh talent. Whoever wins gets a direct partnership with them—it's a deal that can skyrocket a company's valuation overnight. But why are you bringing this up? You look like you're about to tell me they chose the USA this time." Elena laughed lightly at the thought.

"Exactly! But... how did you know?" Chloe asked, stunned.

Elena choked on the air in her lungs, her laughter turning into a cough of pure shock. "What the heck, Chloe? Are you for real?"

"Yes! And here's the best part—our company has a higher chance to win than anyone else because the true giants, the established empires, aren't allowed to participate." Chloe adjusted her glasses, her eyes gleaming.

"You're right, Chloe," Elena whispered, the gears in her head already turning. "If we win this, it will have a massive impact on our shares. This is the opportunity we've been waiting for."

"But Elena," Chloe's voice dropped, becoming serious. "Alex Valois is a man of his word, and he never leaves his enemies alone. Don't you think he will become a massive hurdle in your way?"

Elena shook her head confidently. "No. Not in this situation. His company is an empire—it's bigger and more powerful than the international group itself. According to the strict rules of Global Nexus, a full-grown empire like Valois is disqualified from the 'Rising Star' category. Our path is clear."

Chloe sighed in relief. "You're absolutely right. I totally forgot about that restriction. Okay, let's get to work—we have a war to win."

~The Week of Adrenaline~

The week leading up to the nomination was a fever dream of exhaustion and adrenaline. While the streets of New York were plastered with giant billboards of famous Hollywood actors holding products from NovaStream or Loom & Lustre, Elena Vane took a completely different path.

Inside the Ora & Olio headquarters, the marketing team was panicking.

"Elena, look at the competitors!" Chloe cried, pointing at a screen showing a rival company's $10 million ad campaign featuring a top supermodel.

"They are spending a fortune on professional commercials. We haven't even hired a single production crew. We're going to be invisible!"

Elena didn't look up from her laptop. "Commercials are for people who want to be seen. I want to be needed."

Instead of high-budget ads, Elena spent the week coordinating with hundreds of "lifestyle" influencers—not the ones with millions of fake followers, but the ones people actually trusted. She didn't ask them for a "Paid Partnership" post.

"Don't sell the product," she told them over a Zoom call. "Just live your life. If you're busy and tired, show yourself heating up our Frozen Risotto. If you're at a park, let the camera catch our snack wrapper on the bench. No scripts. No fake smiles. Just reality."

The result was a viral phenomenon. People weren't seeing ads; they were seeing a lifestyle. They saw their favorite creators actually eating the food because it was convenient, not because they were being paid.

~The Strategy: The Trash Initiative~

But the weirdest part of her plan—the one that made her own employees think she had lost her mind—was the "Trash Initiative."

Elena had teams going out to the busiest parts of the city—Times Square, the subway stations, and high-end shopping districts. Their only job? To drop empty, slightly crumpled Ora & Olio wrappers into the public dustbins, making sure the logos were just barely visible at the top of the trash.

"Ma'am, I don't understand," a junior executive whispered during a late-night shift. "We are literally throwing away perfectly good packaging into the trash. It's a waste of resources. Why aren't we handing these out as samples?"

Elena paused, a tired but sharp glint in her eyes. "It's psychology, Ben. When someone walks past a dustbin and sees five of our wrappers in the trash, their brain registers it subconsciously. They don't think 'that's an ad.' They think, 'Everyone is eating this.' The more 'trash' they see, the more they believe we are the most popular brand in the city. Humans are social animals—they want what everyone else is already having."

For seven days, Elena worked 20 hours a day. She was in the kitchens checking the frozen food quality, she was monitoring the "organic" social media mentions, and she was tracking the foot traffic near the "seeded" dustbins.

While other CEOs were at red-carpet launch parties for their nominations, Elena was in her office, her hair in a messy bun, surrounded by data charts and empty coffee cups. She wasn't just building a company; she was hacking the mind of the public.

By the end of the week, Ora & Olio wasn't just a brand. It was an obsession. And yet, as the nomination meeting approached, the question remained—would her "psychological war" be enough to beat the raw, cold power of the mysterious #1 spot?

~At the nomination meeting ~

The air in the Ora & Olio boardroom was thick with the smell of strong coffee and the hum of server fans. For the past week, the entire office had been a war zone. This wasn't just about a project; it was the One-Week Survey to decide the nominations for the International Collaboration. Only the top 20 companies would be chosen.

"Ma'am, the survey closed at midnight," the Operations Manager said, his voice raspy from lack of sleep. "Our sales data from all our restaurant branches and delivery hubs have been uploaded. We've seen a 40% spike in customer engagement this week alone. We've worked harder than any other 'Rising Star' in the market."

Elena nodded, her eyes fixed on the blank projector screen. "We did what we had to. Our quality is higher, and our buyer retention is the best in the industry. There is no reason we shouldn't be at the top of that list."

Chloe sat next to her, clutching her tablet. "The officials are about to release the Global Top 20 Nomination List. Everyone in the industry is watching this live. Based on the data, Elena, you're the favorite for the #1 spot."

"Refresh the page," Elena commanded.

The screen flickered. A digital list began to scroll slowly from the bottom up.

20. GreenBite Co.

19. Aura Cosmetics.

15. SwiftWing Cargo.

The names kept climbing. Elena's team started to lean in, their hearts racing.

10. TerraMove.

5. CyberPulse Tech.

3. Quantum Leap.

"Only two spots left," Chloe whispered, her eyes wide. "This is it."

Suddenly, the screen flashed.

[2. ORA & OLIO GLOBALS]

The room went dead silent. The directors looked at each other in total shock. Elena's hand tightened around her pen until her knuckles turned white. Second? She had calculated everything. She had outworked everyone. How could she be second?

Then, the final name appeared at the very top in a cold, metallic font:

[1. VALIANT VENTURES]

"Valiant Ventures?" Elena murmured, her voice laced with confusion. "Who are they? I've never heard of this company in the business sector. How did a ghost company manage to beat our sales and customer count in just seven days?"

"I'll check their background immediately," the Tech Lead said, typing furiously. "But Elena... their data is perfect. Too perfect. They swept the rural states and mid-market territories while we were focused on our core hubs. They have numbers we didn't even know were possible for a small company."

Elena stared at the name Valiant Ventures. She didn't know that behind that small name stood the infinite bank accounts and shadow-power of something more big . She didn't know that the owner of this company had spend many like water just to place it exactly one inch above her head.

"A new competitor," Elena said, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the #1 spot. "They think they can appear out of nowhere and take my throne? Fine."

She stood up, her aura turning icy. "They may have won the nomination survey, but the actual competition hasn't even started. I want a full profile on whoever owns Valiant Ventures. I want to know how they breathe, how they think, and how they fight."

She walked out of the room, her mind already spinning. For the first time in a long time, she felt a genuine chill of a real threat. She thought she was fighting a rival business—she had no idea she was already in someone's trap.

~ At home~

Later that evening, Elena was at home with Chloe. This wasn't business; it was personal.

"So, Elena, what are you thinking?" Chloe asked, handing her a coffee.

"About what?"

"About Gino. Has he said anything?"

"He said Angelo was in Milan," Elena said, her voice turning cold.

"Then why don't you confront him? He's a big fish. If we find him, we find the Sterlings."

"It's not that simple, Chloe. If we move directly, the Sterlings will find out. They'll either move Angelo to other location or kill him." Chloe hummed as they got busy in other talks.

Suddenly, Chloe's phone buzzed. She gasped. "Elena... look."

~The Valois Penthouse~

Alex was in his home office, his eyes fixed on his laptop as Jimmy marched in.

"What are you doing, Alex?" Jimmy asked, irritated.

"Working. Can't you see?" Alex replied without glancing up.

"That's not what I mean! Ora & Olio Globals is becoming more popular nowadays. It can create problems for us by becoming a massive rival for our food distributive department. Aren't you worried?"

"They can only win in one sector, Jimmy. On the other sectors, I rule alone."

Jimmy raised his brows. "Are you saying this, Alex? Where is your winning spirit? A small company is threatening us!"

"Jimmy... don't overreact. You know a small company like that can't do anything to me. I will look after it. Or... I already have," Alex said in a deep, chilling voice.

Jimmy's eyes widened. "You've already made a plan without telling me?" He smiled mischievously.

A guard interrupted. "Sir, she—"

"Let her come in," Alex ordered.

Within seconds, Elena stormed inside. She threw a file onto Alex's desk. "What is this, Valois?"

Alex looked up with a smirk, playing the victim card. "What, Elena? Have I done something wrong?"

"Oh, really? Then why are you participating in the competition?" Elena roared. "The rule is that only rising companies can participate! You have an Empire! Why do you need this?"

"Lower your voice, Miss Vane," Alex said, standing up and towering over her. "My Empire didn't participate. I played by the rules. If I can't change the rules, I change the game. I bought Valiant Ventures two weeks ago to nominate them. If the company I bought in two weeks can beat the company you built for years... then I don't think you can survive."

Elena glared into his soul. "Okay. Let's see then... who will survive, and who will lose."

[Author's POV]

OH Dude LITERALLY ! Did you guys feel that chill? I'm literally shaking! Elena thought she was playing a fair game, but Alex just flipped the entire chessboard! He didn't just enter the race; he bought a whole new car just to cut her off at the finish line! The tension in that room was enough to start a fire. Elena is out for blood, and Alex is playing the ultimate villain. Is Ora & Olio strong enough to take down a ghost company backed by Valois billions? Or has Elena finally met a hurdle she can't jump over? Stay tuned, because this war just got personal! 🔥😱
