Chapter 50 - Chapter 50 – The Weight of a Legacy

Nicolas Flamel sat calmly in a strange floating chair that hovered silently above the floor. Ancient alchemical runes glowed faintly beneath the seat while delicate levitation enchantments hummed almost imperceptibly through the air.

With a small gesture, he led Leo deeper into the manor until they stopped before an enormous wine cabinet filled with hundreds of bottles collected from countless countries and eras.

"Come," Nicolas said gently. "Let me show you where you'll be studying."

Before Leo could respond, brilliant multicolored lights suddenly spread across the crystal surface behind the cabinet.

The space distorted.

A familiar pulling sensation swept over him.

Not quite like Apparition.

Not quite like Portkey travel either.

The next instant, the world changed completely.

Leo found himself standing inside a vast chamber overflowing with books.

Shelves stretched endlessly in every direction. Ancient tomes floated gently through the air under invisible magical guidance while glowing alchemical circles rotated slowly across the ceiling.

His breathing unconsciously slowed.

This place...

It was magnificent.

Nicolas studied his reaction with amusement before speaking.

"Tell me about your current understanding of alchemy."

Leo scratched his cheek slightly.

"Honestly, I'm still learning," he admitted. "I understand some basic alchemical principles and can create a few simple magical items, but my knowledge is still fairly shallow."

Nicolas nodded thoughtfully.

Then his eyes briefly drifted toward Leo's glasses.

"What is your understanding of elemental transmutation?"

Leo considered the question carefully.

"Elemental transmutation is one of the fundamental pillars of alchemy," he answered slowly. "Through magical methods, one material can theoretically be transformed into another. But doing so requires a deep understanding of both magical laws and material properties."

He paused briefly.

"And the process itself becomes dangerous if stability isn't maintained."

A faint glimmer of approval appeared in Nicolas' tired eyes.

"Then tell me," the old alchemist continued, "what matters most when creating magical artifacts?"

"Stability and functionality," Leo answered immediately. "A magical item is useless if it becomes unstable during operation. Reliability matters just as much as power."

Nicolas smiled slightly.

"Good."

Then his expression sharpened.

"Now tell me the three principles of alchemy."

This time Leo answered without hesitation.

"Equivalent exchange. Understanding. Deconstruction and reconstruction."

Nicolas folded his hands together.

"Explain."

Leo organized his thoughts.

"Equivalent exchange means nothing can be gained without paying an appropriate cost. Understanding refers to fully comprehending both material structures and magical laws."

He glanced briefly toward the floating books surrounding them.

"And deconstruction and reconstruction involve breaking matter apart before rebuilding it into a new form."

Nicolas nodded slowly.

"Then how are these principles applied in practice?"

Leo considered the question for several moments.

"When creating magical artifacts, you first need to understand the materials completely. Then you determine how to safely deconstruct and reconstruct them while maintaining magical balance."

His expression grew more serious.

"And the exchange itself must remain reasonable. Otherwise instability or collapse becomes inevitable."

Silence filled the room briefly.

Finally, Nicolas smiled.

"Very good."

The old alchemist's tired eyes now carried visible satisfaction.

"You possess genuine talent."

Then he added dryly,

"Though your memory is clearly helping you quite a bit as well."

Still, Nicolas wasn't entirely satisfied.

Dumbledore had already described Leo's abilities in considerable detail. His spellcasting talent, magical control, and Transfiguration skill all far exceeded what should be possible for a first-year student.

Then again...

Considering who Leo descended from, perhaps that wasn't surprising at all.

"For now," Nicolas said, "you may freely read the books here. Strengthening your foundation matters more than rushing forward."

Leo immediately reached for the nearest tome.

From that moment onward, time seemed to disappear entirely.

Hours passed unnoticed.

Leo immersed himself completely in the endless ocean of alchemical knowledge surrounding him. Every page revealed concepts he had never encountered before. Ancient theories. Forgotten techniques. Advanced material formulas.

It was intoxicating.

Only much later did Leo finally lift his head from the mountain of books surrounding him.

Instinctively, he checked his pocket watch.

Then froze.

That much time had passed already?

Stretching slightly, Leo's gaze drifted toward Nicolas.

The old alchemist had fallen asleep quietly in his floating chair.

Soft snores echoed gently through the library.

A flicker of guilt rose inside Leo.

He had become so absorbed in studying that he hadn't even noticed when Nicolas drifted off.

Carefully, Leo performed a small Transfiguration spell, creating a soft blanket before gently draping it over the old wizard.

The following days passed in almost complete isolation.

Perenelle personally prepared a guest room for him, but Leo barely used it.

Aside from eating, bathing, and occasionally sleeping, nearly all of his time disappeared inside the enormous alchemical library.

He absorbed knowledge greedily like a starving sponge.

Then he compared everything against the information stored inside the Cave Heaven, constantly verifying and refining his understanding.

At lunch the following afternoon, warm sunlight spilled gently through the manor windows while Leo and Nicolas sat facing one another across the dining table.

The atmosphere felt calm.

Peaceful.

Finally, Leo spoke.

"Master Flamel, I was honestly surprised you recognized the Cave Heaven."

He hesitated briefly.

"And even more surprised that you helped create it."

Earlier that morning, Nicolas had sensed the Cave Heaven hanging around Leo's neck almost immediately.

Only then had he revealed his connection to its creation.

What Leo didn't know was that Nicolas recognized it because traces of his own magic still lingered within the artifact even after all these years.

Nicolas smiled faintly.

"Your ancestor Amber and I were close friends," he said quietly. "We experienced many things together."

His expression softened further.

"He also once saved both my life and Perenelle's."

Deep gratitude appeared in the old alchemist's eyes.

For a brief moment, Nicolas seemed to recall an enormous figure from long ago.

Then suddenly, he stopped himself.

Whatever memory surfaced clearly wasn't something he intended to share.

Perenelle looked toward Leo warmly.

"Seeing you reminds us of him," she said gently. "Especially your eyes."

Leo blinked in surprise.

"My ancestor was really that powerful?"

Images of Amber immediately surfaced in his mind.

That strange appearance.

That overwhelming aura.

Nicolas' expression gradually became serious.

"Some things are dangerous to know too early," he said slowly. "The battle we survived involved matters far beyond ordinary understanding."

Then his gaze sharpened slightly.

"Listen carefully, Leo. The existence of the Cave Heaven must remain secret."

Leo straightened instinctively.

"And you," Nicolas continued quietly, "must avoid becoming too famous within the wizarding world."

His tired eyes carried unusual gravity.

"Otherwise, the attention you attract may become extremely dangerous."

Leo nodded solemnly.

"I understand."

After lunch, Nicolas suddenly looked toward the pendant hanging around Leo's neck.

"Would you allow me to enter the Cave Heaven?" he asked calmly.

Leo blinked in surprise.

Still, he nodded immediately.

"Of course."

Then Nicolas asked another question.

"Why did you rename it 'Cave Heaven'?"

Leo explained patiently.

"In ancient traditions, a Cave Heaven represents a hidden independent world—a place separated from ordinary reality."

His fingers lightly touched the pendant.

"I thought the name suited it perfectly."
