Chapter 9 - The Flame That Burns Back

Night settled over the city, but the lights never dimmed.

From the top floor of Lin Corporation, the world looked small—controlled, distant, almost insignificant.

Lin Yanyan stood by the glass window, her reflection faint against the endless skyline. One hand held a glass of untouched wine. The other rested loosely by her side.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm.

"Chairwoman," her assistant said carefully from behind, "the security division reported something unusual around the eastern district. Should we increase—"

"No."

The answer came without hesitation.

The assistant froze slightly.

Lin Yanyan didn't turn around.

"They're already here."

Silence.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop by a fraction.

"…Here?" the assistant whispered.

Lin Yanyan finally moved.

She placed the glass down on the table with a soft click.

Then she turned.

Her eyes were different tonight.

Still sharp.

Still controlled.

But deeper.

Like something beneath the surface had finally opened its eyes.

"Leave," she said.

The assistant didn't argue.

Didn't question.

She left immediately.

The door closed.

And the moment it did—

The air changed.

A shadow moved.

Not from the door.

Not from the window.

From within the room itself.

A man stepped out from the darkness near the corner.

No sound.

No warning.

Just presence.

Foundation Establishment.

Peak.

Stronger than the previous ones sent to the Su family.

His gaze locked onto Lin Yanyan.

"You noticed," he said.

Lin Yanyan walked back to her desk slowly, as if nothing had changed.

"You're not subtle."

The man didn't react.

"You're not afraid," he observed.

Lin Yanyan sat down.

Crossed her legs.

Looked at him.

"Should I be?"

A pause.

Then she added, almost lazily:

"You're not here to talk."

The assassin didn't waste time.

He moved.

Faster than any normal person could perceive.

The distance between them vanished instantly—

His hand aimed directly at her throat.

A clean kill.

Efficient.

Precise.

But—

He missed.

Not because she dodged wildly.

Not because she reacted late.

But because she had already moved.

Her chair slid back slightly.

Just enough.

The assassin's fingers cut through empty air.

His eyes narrowed.

Impossible.

A mortal shouldn't react to that speed.

Lin Yanyan stood up slowly.

Her heels touched the ground with a soft sound.

She looked at him.

And for the first time—

She smiled.

Not cold.

Not polite.

But sharp.

"You're slower than him."

The assassin's expression changed slightly.

"Him?"

Lin Yanyan didn't explain.

She stepped forward.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Just like before.

But something was different now.

The air around her felt… wrong.

Not like cultivation.

Not like energy.

But like pressure without source.

Invisible.

Untraceable.

"You people keep making the same mistake," she said calmly.

"Thinking I'm just… a normal human."

The assassin's eyes sharpened.

"Are you not?"

Lin Yanyan tilted her head slightly.

Then asked:

"Do I look like someone who survived this long by luck?"

Silence.

Then—

The assassin attacked again.

Faster.

Stronger.

This time, he didn't aim to test.

He aimed to kill.

His energy surged outward, filling the room with killing intent.

Foundation Establishment Peak—

Fully unleashed.

But—

Before his strike could land—

Lin Yanyan moved.

Not faster.

Not stronger.

Just… earlier.

Like she already knew where the attack would go.

Her hand rose slightly—

And pressed against his wrist.

Softly.

Too softly.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

The assassin's body froze.

His eyes widened.

"What…?"

He couldn't move.

Not because of strength.

But because something had disrupted his balance.

Not his energy.

His body.

His control.

Everything felt… off.

Like his own movements no longer belonged to him.

Lin Yanyan stepped closer.

Her voice lowered slightly.

"You rely too much on power."

She looked into his eyes.

"And not enough on control."

The assassin gritted his teeth.

"What are you—"

He never finished.

Because Lin Yanyan's other hand moved.

Not fast.

Not powerful.

Just precise.

Her fingers tapped lightly against his chest.

Right above his heart.

The assassin's expression changed instantly.

Then—

His entire body collapsed.

Like his strength had been cut off at the source.

He fell to one knee.

Breathing uneven.

"What… did you do…" he forced out.

Lin Yanyan looked down at him.

Her expression had changed again.

The sharp smile was gone.

What remained—

Was cold.

Empty.

And far more dangerous.

"You're not worth explaining to."

The assassin tried to stand.

Tried to move.

But couldn't.

Not anymore.

Because something inside him had already been… severed.

Not his life.

Not yet.

Something else.

Lin Yanyan turned away from him.

Walked back to her desk.

Picked up her glass again.

"You came alone?"

Silence.

No answer.

She sighed softly.

"Then you're not important."

The assassin's eyes filled with rage.

He forced his energy to surge again—

Trying to break whatever had been done to him.

For a moment—

It worked.

His aura flared violently.

The room trembled slightly.

But—

Lin Yanyan didn't even look at him.

"Don't struggle."

Her voice was quiet.

But absolute.

"It makes it worse."

He didn't listen.

Of course he didn't.

Cultivators never did.

They believed power could solve everything.

That breaking limits meant freedom.

That resistance meant survival.

But—

They didn't understand.

Some limits…

Weren't meant to be broken.

The moment his energy surged again—

His body twisted violently.

A silent scream tore through his throat.

Then—

Everything stopped.

Completely.

His body went still.

Collapsed.

Dead.

Silence filled the room again.

Lin Yanyan finally turned.

Looked at the body.

Then away.

Uninterested.

She walked toward the window again.

As if nothing had happened.

After a moment, the door opened slightly.

Her assistant stepped in carefully.

"…Chairwoman?"

Lin Yanyan didn't turn.

"Clean it up."

The assistant's eyes widened when she saw the body.

But she didn't ask questions.

Didn't hesitate.

She nodded and left quickly.

Alone again—

Lin Yanyan placed her hand against the glass.

Her reflection stared back.

But this time—

It looked different.

Not because her appearance changed.

But because the feeling behind it had.

Something deeper.

Older.

Hidden.

Her fingers moved slightly.

As if remembering something.

A fragment.

A past.

A place where strength wasn't measured the same way.

Where survival required more than power.

Where control…

Meant everything.

Her eyes softened slightly.

Just for a moment.

"Su Chen…"

His name came out quieter this time.

Not possessive.

Not sharp.

But thoughtful.

"You're not the only one hiding something."

A pause.

Then—

Her lips curved again.

The familiar smile returned.

But now…

It carried something heavier.

"You broke their expectations."

She tapped lightly against the glass.

"I broke mine a long time ago."

Far away—

In the darkness where the orders were given—

Another light went out.

Another failure.

This time—

The silence lasted longer.

Back in the city—

Lin Yanyan turned away from the window.

Picked up her coat.

And walked toward the door.

Her steps were calm again.

Controlled.

Perfect.

But behind that calm—

Something had already been revealed.

Just a glimpse.

Just enough.

To show that she wasn't just the woman standing beside Su Chen—

She was something that walked her own path.

Equally dangerous.

Equally unknown.

And when she stepped out into the night—

The city lights reflected in her eyes like distant flames.

Unsteady.

Unpredictable.

Burning.
