Chapter 70 - Those Eccentric Relatives - Saint Baelor

Baelor Targaryen, known as the "Blessed Baelor," was the King of the Seven Kingdoms, yet he devoutly worshipped the Seven Gods.

What Daenerys found most striking was Saint Baelor's construction of a tall tower in the Red Keep called the Maidenvault.

But what was the Maidenvault specifically used for?

To imprison his sisters.

The Targaryens had a tradition of brother-sister marriages, but such incestuous unions were strictly forbidden by the Doctrine of the Seven Gods.

Thus, Baelor annulled his engagement to his sister Daena and took religious vows: to remain a virgin and never marry.

This in itself wouldn't have been so odd; after all, he wasn't the only emperor to become a monk.

The truly absurd part was that his three sisters—Daena, Rhaena, and Elaena—were all young, beautiful, and lovely, blessed with the Targaryen's renowned beauty.

As a normal man, Baelor developed carnal desires towards them.

Yet he was too devout, having risen to become the High Septon of the Church of the Seven.

Driven mad by his piety, he sought to reject his sisters' carnal temptations (causing his sisters to raise their eyebrows in confusion). To achieve this, he built the Maidenvault in the palace and locked his three sisters inside.

"Fairy, cease your seduction of this Holy Monk!"

He refused to touch them himself, nor would he allow other men to, claiming it was to protect their purity from the corruption of male lust and worldly evils.

Given Baelor's nature, he might not have been lying; perhaps he truly believed this.

"We will ascend to heaven together, my sisters and I, in sacred purity."

Saint Baelor later declared prostitution illegal, banishing all harlots and their children from King's Landing. He proclaimed that all were equal under the Seven Gods, making a noble Earl wash the feet of lepers. To commune with the divine and grasp the true meaning of the Doctrine of the Seven Gods, he frequently "secluded himself for spiritual cultivation"—locking himself in the holy temple, praying without food or drink, until he starved to death!

Saint Baelor's deeds were many. It could almost be said that the Seven Gods were equivalent to Christianity, and Saint Baelor to Saint Peter (the chief of Jesus' twelve apostles). Burning books of magical knowledge was child's play to him.

"Alas, what a pity," Daenerys sighed. "Knowledge is priceless and innocent."

Ji Qi, the maid who had been listening silently, spoke up. "Khaleesi, dragons hatched from the moon."

"Oh?" Daenerys was amused and asked with a smile, "You've studied the origins of dragons too?"

The Horseman girl straightened her face and replied earnestly, "Originally, there were two moons in the sky. One, being too close to the sun, couldn't withstand the scorching heat. It shattered like an egg, and millions of dragons surged forth."

"Everyone knows that," she added quickly.

"Haha, do you know how far the moon is from the earth? Even a dragon flying its entire life couldn't reach the ground. And the environment beyond the sky is too harsh for even the Giant Dragons to survive," Daenerys said, shaking her head.

Suddenly, a thought struck her. "Everyone knows this legend?"

"Even the Qarthians know it," Ji Qi said quickly.

Daenerys glanced at Jorah, Whitebeard, and Bevos. "Do you know it?"

"No," Jorah and Whitebeard replied.

"I've heard similar myths in Meereen," the fat eunuch said, scratching his head uncertainly.

Daenerys fell into thought. The Dothraki, Qarthians, and Meereenese were three distinct peoples with different beliefs and cultures. If they all shared this one belief, then the legend must contain some kernel of truth.

What if there really were two moons?

This wouldn't violate celestial mechanics. Multiple-satellite planets are quite common; it's actually rare for a planet to have only one, like Earth.

What if one of the moons disappeared? Or what if that celestial body closer to the sun were actually a moon?

What if it were another, more distant star?

The most famous characteristic of a three-body system is that the planet's seasons are completely unpredictable.

This...

Alright, Daenerys thought, she was getting carried away. Even if the "second moon" were a star, there would only be two stars, one short of a three-star system.

Still, a binary system seemed plausible.

She hoped the Valyrian Grand Maester was telling the truth—that this world had gods. And, as in the prophecies, the Green Prophet was as much of a plot device as ever. Perhaps she could uncover the world's truth from them.

The thought had barely formed when she scoffed at herself. Even if she understood the mechanics of this system, what good would it do her?

The fleet remained at New Ghis for three days. On the fourth day, when the sails were fully inflated, Captain Groleo gave the order. The thick iron anchors creaked as they were winched from the seabed.

The fleet continued westward, leaving the small island of New Ghis behind.

Before departing, they sent a small boat to the harbor to purchase some fruits, vegetables, and medicine.

"The Black Dragon still hasn't returned. Should we really wait for it?" Blackbeard asked Daenerys, glancing around anxiously.

Big Black seemed to look down on his two younger brothers, Little White and Little Green, like a top student in the rocket class dissing slackers.

He had always been a loner, spending the past few days poaching goats and fat cattle—livestock raised by the people of New Ghis—in the interior of Bann Island.

Little White and Little Green lacked Big Black's endurance and didn't dare fly too far from Daenerys, so they could only catch flying fish that leaped out of the sea near the ship.

"There's no need to wait. The Giant Dragon can sense my location and will find us himself," Daenerys said.

Since the Temple of Dust "consumed" a Faith Spirit (a Demigod), Big Black's intelligence had grown, and his size had increased rapidly, like crops fertilized with magic fertilizer.

Growth required a massive amount of food, and the ship's supplies were limited, forcing Big Black to go out and forage!

As expected, two days later, the sailors on deck suddenly felt the sky darken overhead, as if a vast cloud had obscured the clear blue. Looking up, they let out cries of awe and fear.

The Black Dragon, now the size of a pony, unfurled its wings, each spanning ten meters and four to five meters in width.

With a sudden fold of its wings, its body shot down like a missile, whistling as it plummeted toward the sea. *Whoosh!*

Water splashed in a beautiful arc—not a massive amount, but enough to win a gold medal in a diving competition.

*Gurgle, gurgle!*

White steam and black smoke churned in the blue water, turning the sea into a boiling cauldron.

A full half-minute passed before a *boom!*

The water exploded upward, and a dark shape burst from the depths. With a *flap, flap*, Big Black spread its wings and hovered four to five meters above the surface, shaking the droplets from them. Then, with a *hiss*, it soared into the sky.

Jorah, who had been leaning over the railing to watch, asked in confusion, "What was it doing? Taking a bath?"

Before he finished speaking, a white mass slowly rose from the deep blue seabed—a 15-meter-long, blimp-like white whale, its belly facing upward. Its milky-white head was charred and mangled, black blood oozing from the wounds, leaving a gruesome scene.

"Seven hells!" Ser Jorah exclaimed, his voice filled with disbelief. "The Black Dragon actually hunted a sea monster."

Daenerys retorted, "How could you think it was a sea monster? It's a whale—the most docile of the large marine animals."

"But the Black Dragon is less than half a year old," Jorah insisted seriously. "By the time he's a hundred, he could easily kill a sea monster. It seems the legends are true—Giant Dragons do feast on sea monsters."

"Oh, by the Seven Gods, the Black Dragon has killed a massive whale!" a sailor shouted, and soon a crowd had gathered at the ship's rail.

"Quick, lower the hooks! Have a sailor go down and secure the whale," Groleo ordered, glancing at the carcass as it drifted toward the stern.

Daenerys drove away the three eager Dragons, then had the sailors cut the enormous whale carcass into chunks. Standing at the stern, she picked up a bloody piece of whale meat from a wooden bucket and hurled it skyward.

"Sizzle—Boom!"

A pillar of fire erupted from Big Black's mouth, charring the meat almost instantly. Before the charred morsel could fall, the Dragon's fanged maw snapped it up.

She bent down to grab another piece from the bucket and repeated the process. Little White and Little Green, meanwhile, wrestled with each other as they fought for the food.

"Princess! Princess!" Jorah leaned over the railing of the bridge, waving to Daenerys at the stern of the ship.

Daenerys handed the dragon-feeding duties to Quaithe and washed the blood from her hands in a bucket of seawater hanging over the side. She hurried toward the high platform on the third deck.

Besides Daenerys herself, the three dragons were closest to Quaithe, the Horseman warrior.

Dragon feeders could establish friendly bonds with dragons.

Daenerys had appointed Quaithe as the Giant Dragon Guardian. Naturally, she couldn't allow the dragons to harm him, so she often entrusted him with feeding them.

The *Seduction* resembled the treasure ships used by Zheng He during his early Ming Dynasty voyages, with a hull even larger than that of a Spanish galleon.

However, the bridge was designed more like a sailing ship's forecastle: an open-air platform from which the helmsman could steer and the crew could raise and lower the sails.

The burly Bevos squatted nearby, skewering pieces of glistening, golden-brown whale meat over the coals. His narrow, studded leather vest was splattered with grease, but he paid it no mind, continuing to eat merrily.

Jorah, Groleo, and Whitebeard stood with grave expressions, as if they had just finished arguing.

"Princess," Jorah said, his voice serious, "we'll reach the Valyrian Sea in another day. We must change course immediately!"

He had discussed this matter with Daenerys many times. While she agreed with his idea of buying Unsullied in Slaver's Bay, she had never urged him to change course.

"Princess, Governor Illyrio and the people of the Seven Kingdoms are waiting for you!" Groleo urged, his brow furrowed.

He wasn't foolish; Ser Jorah had clearly not just recently conceived of going to Slaver's Bay. The Princess had likely known of this for some time.

"Princess, you are the true Queen. With the kings of Westeros warring and all industries in ruins, the people suffering, only you can restore order and justice," Whitebeard added.

Daenerys glanced at them, torn, and asked Jorah, "What do you think?"

"Heh." Ser Jorah laughed coldly at Whitebeard. "These past days, you've perfectly demonstrated your wisdom and experience to the Princess, even sharing knowledge of dragons. So why feign ignorance and urge her to go to Westeros to die?"

"You're spouting nonsense!" Whitebeard's white beard bristled with anger.

"Hmph, with your insight, can you not see that beyond her three young dragons and the Targaryen name, the Princess has no capital to claim the throne?"
