Chapter 37 - BERSERK

The battlefield grew silent, save for the dry whistle of the desert wind. Azula stood amidst the carnage, the tip of her blade lowered. The sword, a masterpiece of ancient craftsmanship, hummed with a low, dissonant vibration; the runes etched along the fuller bled a faint, violet light, purging the viscous, black ichor of the monsters from the steel.

Kyle stood a few paces away, his brow furrowed as he inspected the hem of his tunic. A splatter of gore had marred the fabric, ruining its pristine aesthetic. "Zayne is going to be furious if he sees this," he muttered, his voice cold and devoid of its usual predatory edge.

Vaygar, his massive, feline-dragon hybrid form looming over the sands, let out a deep, rumbling chortle. "A god, concerned with the triviality of thread and dye? Your priorities are as muddled as a hatchling's, boy."

Azula allowed a small, sharp chuckle to escape, but Kyle's response was immediate. He snapped his head toward Vaygar, his eyes narrowing into a death stare that could have withered stone. Vaygar merely blinked, unfazed. Kyle then turned his gaze to Azula, who was still watching him with an inscrutable expression. The "god" persona snapped back into place instantly, his posture stiffening into a mask of regal indifference.

"Lead the way," he commanded, his voice brooking no argument.

He kept his suspicions about her demon-like sword style buried deep beneath a layer of calculated apathy. The Dark Lord had made it clear: all of this was a trial designed for Kyle's benefit. If Azula was a subject of the Dark Lord's right hand, then she was merely a tool—a weapon to be utilized and discarded. There was no need for a god to fear his own furniture.

They took to the skies, the wind whipping past them until Azula gestured toward a jagged, obsidian-colored cliff. They landed silently. Before Kyle even touched the ground, his mana sense spiked, registering a level of corruption so foul it felt like needles pressing against his soul. Something ancient and nightmarish slumbered in the cave below.

They crouched, analyzing the terrain. Using a handful of scattered pebbles and the bleached ribcage of a long-dead beast, Kyle laid out his plan. His tone was absolute, his instructions cold and surgical. Azula argued, her brow furrowed, but the sheer, crushing arrogance in Kyle's voice silenced her. She would enter the cave through the shadows; he would remain the beacon, drawing the ghouls into a slaughter.

Azula began the ritual. She knelt, her fingers blurring as she traced intricate, glowing runes around Kyle's boots. As the sigils locked into place, Kyle looked down into the darkness of the ravine. The thralls below were shifting, their twisted forms sensitive to the burgeoning pressure of his intent.

"Remember," Vaygar's voice echoed in his mind, sharp and urgent. "The bond skill is volatile. You have exactly five minutes in the berserk state before it tears your core apart."

Kyle didn't answer. He waited until Azula dissolved into a ripple of shadow, vanishing from sight. Then, he began to breathe.

He sat in the center of the cliff, drawing the ambient mana toward him like a tide. He felt the familiar, dangerous pull of the 8th circle. It was a bridge too far for his current foundation, but the temptation to refine the base of his potential—to touch the precipice of archmage status—was intoxicating. He poured his will into the gathering currents.

Then, the world changed.

He stood, his eyes snapping open. With a sharp exhale, he commanded the winds. They didn't just obey; they screamed. A vortex erupted around him, a swirling prison of razor-sharp air that tore the sand from the cliffside.

Below, the thrall stirred. A hundred ghouls, their skin pale and necrotic, raised their heads. A chorus of demented, wet chortles drifted upward as their eyes fixed on the man wreathed in the cyclone.

Kyle grinned, a predatory expression that had no place on a human face. The vortex wasn't just bait; it was a kiln.

He didn't hold back. He opened his core, letting every drop of his internal mana pour out, and ignited it. The wind roared, turning from a transparent gale into a pillar of searing, golden flame. He stretched out his hand, his core suddenly hollow—a vacuum waiting to be filled. The tornado compressed, shrieking as the physics of the world bowed to his command, until the entire storm condensed into a single, lethal spear of concentrated fire held in his palm.

He felt the weight of it—the raw, destructive potential of a dying star. He threw it.

The recoil was a physical blow, sending him sliding back across the stone, but the spear was already gone, a streak of blinding light carving through the desert sky.

*Boom.*

The impact was not merely an explosion; it was an erasure. When the fire touched the center of the frenzy, the reality of the ravine seemed to fold. A dome of white-hot light expanded, vaporizing the ghouls instantly. Their bodies didn't just burn; they were disintegrated into ash, their essence stripped away and violently sucked into Kyle's hungry core.

As the mana surged back into him, he felt his own body warp. His hair lengthened, bleeding of all color until it turned the shade of moonlight—a pale, spectral white. Gauntlets of hardened, living shadow wove themselves around his forearms, clicking into place with the sound of snapping bone.

He didn't wait for the flames to die. He tasted the blood of the earth. He activated the berserk skill, his consciousness fracturing, and hurled himself into the heart of the inferno, a monster diving into a graveyard of his own making.
