Chapter 89 - Chapter 89: The Flatmate’s Misunderstanding

The heavy silence that followed Shreya's revelation about Madhuri's mysterious disappearance hung in the air like a physical weight. Rahul sat motionless on the sofa, his mind racing as he tried to process the dark turn his investigation had taken. Amar and Madhuri vanishing without a trace from a guarded military compound pointed to something far more sinister and calculated than a simple falling out.

Before either of them could pull themselves back from the grim abyss of their thoughts, the quiet atmosphere of the apartment was interrupted.

The front door clicked open, and someone slipped inside without a sound, carrying the gentle rustle of grocery bags.

It was Rupa, Shreya's flatmate of over a year.

Rupa kicked off her flats at the entryway and stepped into the living room, her eyes darting up to find Shreya sitting remarkably close to a striking, sharp-faced young man she had never laid eyes on before. Her steps faltered, and a bright, knowing smirk instantly replaced her initial surprise. In the entire year they had shared the apartment, Shreya had never brought a man home—let alone sat beside one with such raw, lingering emotional intensity in the air. To Rupa, the conclusion was as obvious as the sun at noon: this had to be Shreya's long-kept secret boyfriend.

"Oh! Well, well, well," Rupa teased brightly, dropping her keys onto the entryway bowl and walking over with an amused grin. "Am I interrupting something profound here?"

Shreya blinked, snapping out of her daze, her cheeks flushing a sudden, bright crimson. "Rupa, wait, it's not—"

Before Shreya could finish, Rupa had already extended a friendly hand toward Rahul, introducing herself with bubbly enthusiasm. "Hi, I'm Rupa, Shreya's flatmate. It's so nice to finally meet you! Honestly, I'm just shocked. We've been living together for a full year, and she has never once mentioned a boyfriend. She's always buried headfirst in financial spreadsheets, working twenty-four hours a day. I've never even seen her chat with anyone on her phone like she cares."

Rupa laughed softly, tossing a playful glance toward a blushing Shreya. "I have to hand it to you, though—your boyfriend is exceptionally handsome, Shreya! Why on earth did you hide him away in secret all this time? You didn't need to worry; I promise I wouldn't steal your handsome boyfriend!"

"Stop, stop, stop! Rupa, please breathe for a second!" Shreya stammered, her face turning even redder as she threw her hands up defensively. "You got it totally, completely wrong! He is not my boyfriend."

Rupa raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. "Oh, really? Then who is he?"

"He is my college senior and my closest friend," Shreya said, her voice softening as she looked at Rahul with an expression filled with years of unspoken loyalty. "This is Rahul. Do you remember? I told you about him once—the friend we spent hours talking about."

Rupa's playful smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a look of profound realization and immediate mortification. Her eyes widened as the name registered in her mind, connecting all the emotional dots of the stories Shreya had shared over late-night cups of coffee.

"Oh..." Rupa breathed out, her hands flying to her mouth in utter embarrassment. "Oh, goodness me. Rahul? The Rahul?" She turned to him, bowing her head slightly with genuine remorse. "I am so, so sorry, Rahul. Please, please don't take my teasing to heart. Shreya is a wonderful girl, but she's been so guarded, and seeing her sitting so close to you after everything she's told me... I jumped to completely the wrong conclusion. I'm deeply sorry for running my mouth."

Rahul offered a faint, understanding smile, the tension in his shoulders easing. "No apologies needed, Rupa. Your protectiveness over her proves what kind of friend you are. I'm just glad she had someone like you looking out for her while I was away."

Rupa smiled warmly, her embarrassment washing away under his graciousness. Then, looking at the clock on the wall, which already showed past nine in the evening, her hospitality took over. "Well, it's already quite late, and you must have traveled a long way to get here. You aren't going anywhere tonight—you can stay right here with us. We have a comfortable guest room all set up. Please, make yourself entirely at home."

Rahul immediately shook his head, instinctively resisting the idea of imposing. "No, I couldn't possibly. I should find a hotel nearby and let you both get back to your weekend routine."

"Absolutely not," Shreya intervened instantly, her voice carrying a tone of absolute finality that brooked no argument. She stood up, blocking the path to the front door with quiet stubbornness. "You are not stepping foot out of this apartment at this hour, Rahul. After thirty months, you think we are just going to wave goodbye and let you sleep in a sterile hotel room?"

Rupa chimed in, stepping up beside Shreya to block the exit route as well with a cheeky grin. "That's right! The doors are officially locked, and the security guard downstairs has strict instructions not to let any stubborn ex-college seniors sneak out into the night. Consider yourself our captive guest."

Looking at the two women standing shoulder-to-shoulder, their expressions a mix of fierce affection and stubborn warmth, Rahul felt a thick lump form in his throat. The cold, impenetrable armor he had worn for years cracked just a little bit more.

"Alright," Rahul surrendered softly, a genuine smile reaching his eyes. "You win. I'll stay."

Later that evening, after settling into the guest room, Rahul sat on the edge of the bed and picked up Shreya's phone, dialing a number etched into his memory. When Shreya's parents answered on the third ring, greeted by the sound of his voice, they expressed profound relief and joy. They made him promise to look after their daughter, specifically reminding him to take her out to unwind and have fun since the next day was Sunday. Rahul readily accepted their request.
