Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Big Fish

Ram felt a chill shoot up from her heels straight to her brain. She fiercely shook the reins in her hand, letting out a crisp "crack" as they struck the back of the Earth Dragon.

"Hoo!"

The Earth Dragon understood the driver's intention and instantly increased its running speed.

"Grin! Look behind us, what is that thing in the sky?"

Ram suppressed all her emotions, concentrating fully as she expertly steered the dragon carriage onto a small path leading into the forest.

Her instinct told her she had to quickly get off the open main road!

Alarm bells were ringing in Grin's heart as well. He looked back and saw a massive fog covering the area from not far away.

In the center of the fog, there was a bulky, elongated black shadow.

"Oh my god! Master, what a huge fish!"

The magic mirror sensed the danger and spontaneously floated up before Grin's eyes.

A fish?

Grin thought for a moment and immediately reacted.

Holy crap, could it be that thing?

It appeared early, didn't it!

No, this big guy must have always been active around the Great Tree of Flugel. It's just that due to Survivor Bias, everyone who saw this thing died!

Therefore, at this point in time, no one knew this giant creature had already appeared.

The sound of the wind vanished, even the buzzing of insects fell silent, leaving only sticky air clinging to the skin, carrying a salty, fishy smell of decay.

Tiny ice crystals floated in the mist; they didn't melt upon landing but instead pricked the skin like needles, piercing deep into the bone marrow.

Ram observed the changes around them, and a terrible thought surfaced in her mind.

"Is it really the White Whale? Damn it, Ram refuses to be buried alongside such a filthy creature!"

The peach-haired girl said resolutely, and the dragon carriage, driven by her will, navigated the bumpy path with agility.

"Stop being so dramatic, Ram. I don't want to die either!"

Grin desperately suppressed the fear in his heart, quickly entered the carriage, and threw all the luggage and everything visible off the dragon carriage to reduce some weight.

Boom!

A massive cylindrical burst of mist erupted from the mouth of the giant creature in the sky, smashing down behind the dragon carriage like a laser beam.

Clang!

The immense blast wave shook the ground, and the trees that had been concealing their location instantly toppled over.

The White Whale's attack was like a bulldozer, continuously destroying the ecology of the area.

Roar!

The Earth Dragon let out a terrified shriek and ran for its life. The creature, usually so muscular, was now no different from an ant.

If it could, it would bite through the reins and flee.

Boom! Boom!

The White Whale, possessing higher intelligence, continuously sprayed mist, attempting to restrict the dragon carriage's maneuvering space.

"We're done for!"

Grin's expression had never been so serious. He lightly chewed on his Fingers, desperately searching his mind for a way to survive.

As for Shamak magic, it would probably be dispersed in an instant.

Other offensive methods could not cause any effective damage.

"magic mirror, I remember you can refract light, right!"

A flash of inspiration crossed Grin's mind. He thought of a risky solution, a slim chance for survival.

If they couldn't escape and couldn't fight, they could only hide.

The magic mirror floated up, looked at Grin, and replied:

"I understand your idea, Master! I can indeed achieve an invisibility effect by refracting light. However, during the invisibility process, you cannot move, and even subtle movements will disrupt the balanced light."

Grin licked his lips, which were dry from tension.

"It seems there's no other choice. Life and death are fated, wealth and honor depend on heaven. Begin, magic mirror!"

The magic mirror was silent for a few seconds, then said, "Master, this ability cannot cover a large area. At most, it can conceal one person."

Hearing this, Ram couldn't help but give a bitter smile.

The sudden appearance of this talking magic mirror surprised her, but based on her worldview, it must be some kind of Great Spirit in a strange form.

After a moment, Ram adjusted her mindset.

"Fight to live, Mr. Mouse. Don't worry about Ram. Ram's vitality is far stronger than that of a rodent! If... if Ram cannot return to the Menzies Territory, please... look after Rem."

Grin was stunned for a moment. This Ram, she must be trying to lure the White Whale away by herself.

Now it seems the tsundere Ram has a few adorable qualities.

"I've really been underestimated, Ram."

Grin stood up and stretched his limbs, clasping his hands together and making a loud cracking sound, putting on a show of coolness.

The White Whale swooped down toward the dragon carriage. From Grin's perspective, it looked as if the sky was falling.

Seeing this, Ram said anxiously, "Jump out of the carriage, Grin!"

Grin ignored Ram's cries, instead decisively grabbing Ram by her slender waist and violently throwing her sideways.

Ram traced a long, sweeping arc through the air.

"El Fura!"

Just before hitting the ground, Ram used Wind Magic, condensing a violent gust of wind and blowing it downward, slowing her descent.

Finally, Ram rolled several times on the ground, eventually neutralizing her body's momentum.

Just as she was about to stand up, she felt something strange coming from her embrace.

Looking down, the source of the foreign sensation was the talking Golden Mirror.

"Idiot, quickly curl up your body!"

The magic mirror scolded her, then rapidly began releasing a colorful halo, continuously distorting the surrounding light.

Ram had no time to think. Obediently, she curled up her body, hiding herself beneath the special barrier constructed by the magic mirror, gradually erasing her presence.

Roar!

On the other side, a loud roar, wrapped in dense fog and gale-force winds, engulfed the dragon carriage.

The White Whale opened its abyss-like maw, two rows of teeth gleaming coldly, lined up like sharp knives.

As the White Whale lowered its altitude, its lower jaw embedded itself into the earth like a scoop, plowing toward Grin at an astonishing speed!

Grin released the Earth Dragon from its restraints, freeing the diligent creature. Subsequently, the solitary dragon carriage slid across the ground for a distance, as if emergency brakes had been applied, before stopping in place.

The fleeing Earth Dragon turned its head and glanced at Grin gratefully, thinking: *He really did that, I'm moved to tears.*

At this moment, the White Whale was right upon him, and a scorching blast of air rushed into his face!

"Me, avoiding your edge?"

After speaking, Grin performed a Leap of Faith and jumped into the White Whale's mouth.

The instant the White Whale's massive jaws clamped shut, a puff of black smoke exploded.

It was like biting into a high-density smoke bomb.

A massive quantity of black gas filled the White Whale's throat, causing black smoke to continuously pour out of its nasal cavity and mouth; even the organs that spewed white mist began choking out black gas.

"Green Andersen!"

Ram didn't dare to shout, only uttering his name heavily.

In Ram's eyes, Grin's body was smothered in one bite by the mountain-sized White Whale.

She truly couldn't figure out why Grin would sacrifice his life for her. Had this guy's heart become so kind?

The White Whale felt terrible, choked by the smoke. This Potent Smoke was too strong; it was practically suffocating it.

Its massive body twisted around on the ground several times before it regained its ability to fly.

The White Whale smacked its lips, trying hard to find some small piece of flesh inside its mouth.

Why does it feel like I ate nothing?

The White Whale brainstormed for a long time but couldn't figure it out, so it decided to stop thinking about it. Maybe it accidentally swallowed the prey while choking.

It had clearly seen two people on the carriage just now.

Thus, the White Whale started hovering low again, scouting the ground, its millstone-sized pupils flashing with dangerous light.

Its enormous body brought it not only immense strength but also an endless hunger in its belly. Only continuous feeding could buy it brief tranquility.

This time, it definitely had to chew carefully and fully savor the sensation of that moist, warm feeling bursting in its mouth.
