「New fingerprint detected. Existing biometric profile mismatch. Skippy has ceased operation.」
The moment Jackie took Skippy, the little gremlin started acting up.
"V, what the hell is this, choom?" Jackie had never handled a weapon this smart before. The numbers looked good, but the gun itself was… weird.
"It's lively, but it'll do." Vash said. Then he addressed the pistol, voice flat, "Skippy. I authorize the person in front of you to use you."
A cheeky little rocket holo popped out of the gun again.
「Skippy does not support Dual Wield Mode.」
"If you don't support it, I've got no reason to keep you." Vash said, irritated, "I'll strip you for parts, toss your AI into the Net, and you'll never get reincarnated."
The rocket holo froze, then made a panicked face.
「Everything is negotiable. Dual Wield Mode activated. Current user added: Jackie Welles.」
Jackie played with Skippy for a minute. Once he understood the modes, he actually started to grin.
"Alright." Vash said, "Before they surround us, we push out — now."
Jackie nodded, then lifted the pistol, "You're handing me this toy… what are you running with?"
Vash pulled out the Nekomata, "I'll post up and pick them off."
Jackie's eyes lit up, "Now that's what I'm talking about — preem. Let's move."

They tore out through a maintenance passage.
Jackie kept Skippy in Stone Cold Killer mode, sweeping the corridor, "V — there's a lot of Militech hardware up ahead."
"Relax. I already hacked the whole place." Vash said.
"As always — thorough." Jackie chuckled, tension draining from his shoulders.
They hit a wide workshop floor. The layout was a maze: food-processing machines, conveyor lines, and three-story staircases crossing and tangling like a steel spiderweb.
Footsteps thundered outside. Through gaps between machines, they saw Maelstromers flooding in.
Vash and Jackie exchanged a look. Jackie slid left, ghosting toward the stairs — classic merc instincts. It wasn't just about shooting; it was about terrain, angles, and not giving the enemy a clean line.
He moved behind stacked crates, then lined Skippy up on a Maelstrom punk holding position.
Bang!!
Stone Cold Killer. Auto-lock.
One shot, one drop!
Jackie immediately shifted. Outside, Maelstrom returned fire in a spray-and-pray storm, bullets chewing through metal and plastic without discrimination.
Up high, Vash planted his footing, braced the rifle, and brought up the Nekomata.
With his 〈Perfect Weapon Mastery〉 — and a system-built piece in his hands — anyone who landed in his scope was already dead the moment he decided to squeeze.
But clean one-shot kills were boring. He wanted something nastier.
Vash pulled out the latest Militech mod: Lightning Core. He slotted it into the Nekomata's mod port.
The rifle's readout flashed — then updated. Lightning rounds!
⌜▹▹▹▹▹▹▹▹▹▹▹▹▹▹▹⌝
" Nekomata "
" Type: Sniper Rifle "
" Installed Mod: Lightning Core — Lightning Storm (On hit, chance to trigger chain lightning across multiple targets within range.) " " Intrinsic Mod: Can be charged from hip-fire. " ⌞◃◃◃◃◃◃◃◃◃◃◃◃◃◃◃⌟
In the base game, mods were meant for cyberware — guns usually shipped with fixed stats baked into the hardware.
But the Nekomata in Vash's hands wasn't standard issue. It was a system product, and it played by system rules.
He raised the rifle. In his scope: a Maelstromer with a heavy machine gun, dumping rounds into Jackie's cover like they were trying to saw the world in half.
Zap!
Vash fired, and a thundercrack of electricity snapped through the air!
The lightning round punched into the shooter's head — then the discharge jumped sideways, lashing the gonk next to him and carving a smoking crater through their chest.
Vash adjusted his angle and did something crueler: he put the next shot into the iron stairs.
The Maelstromers crouched on the steps convulsed instantly. Current surged through the metal, straight into their chrome and into their brains. Their bodies spasmed, then toppled — dead weight spilling over the railings.
Maelstrom loved stuffing extra cyberware into their skulls, rewiring themselves to carry more weapons and more implants. It made them tougher in some ways — and fragile in exactly one: a direct surge to the brain.
Once Vash confirmed it worked, he stopped aiming at people, and started aiming at metal.
Chain lightning. Instant brain-death!
And just like that, the fight turned into a one-sided slaughter.
After a few volleys, Jackie discovered the joy of Skippy's Puppy-Loving Pacifist mode — limbs only.
Each shot dropped someone screaming… and with the way Skippy "helped", certain critical parts, aka balls, kept getting ruined.
The scene was — honestly — beautiful in the worst possible way.
