Chapter 1 - Luck

Fuck... It hurts!

"Don't move. You're a big boy y, are you still afraid of pain?" A nurse in her twenties standing in front of him said while holding his head.

"Be gentle, it really hurts lady." Nick shrank his head back and hissed.

"Bear with it, I'm cleaning your wound with iodine. If you move again, I'm switching to alcohol." The nurse gripped his head firmly and threatened.

Hearing the nurse's words, Nick didn't dare to move recklessly. Better to offend a villain than a doctor. Otherwise, you'll likely suffer for it.

Feeling the nurse rubbing the iodine-soaked cotton ball back and forth on the wound on top of his head, Nick had the urge to die.

Well, that metaphor was a bit exaggerated, but Nick could clearly feel a stinging sensation spreading from the wound on his head all the way into his brain.

Perhaps, besides sweet and savory grapes, there might also be sour ones.

Pfft, pfft, why am I thinking about grapes again? It seems I have a craving; I must go and buy some.

"Alright, done!"

Lost in his wild thoughts, he stood up upon hearing the nurse's words and looked at the nurse who was tidying up her medical instruments, saying, "Thank you."

"Sit down, you still need a tetanus shot." The nurse picked up the syringe and scolded him.

Seeing the long, thin blue syringe in the nurse's hand, Nick couldn't help but swallow hard and said, "Do I really need a shot? It's just a head wound from being hit by hail."

"You injured your head, you can't be careless. Who knows if that hail was clean? What if there's some bacterial or viral infection?" The nurse rolled her eyes at him and continued fiddling with her syringe.

Watching the liquid spray from the needle tip, Nick couldn't help but swallow again: "Do I need a skin test too?"

"It's safer to get a shot, to see if you're allergic to the vaccine." As she spoke, the nurse wiped his arm with a cotton ball, then pressed the needle against his skin and slowly inserted it.

Fuck...

"A big man, yet afraid of needles." The nurse said with a mocking expression.

To this, Nick shook his head and said, "I'm certainly not afraid of shots, what I'm afraid of is you waving the syringe in front of me."

"Wait fifteen minutes, I'll come back to check the results." After saying this, the nurse picked up the tray and walked out.

Watching the nurse's departing back, Nick felt the pain in his head and arm, and shook his head helplessly.

Thinking back on the day, he really was unlucky. Choked on water in the morning, bit his tongue while eating lunch. Finally, it was evening, but unexpectedly, a sudden gust of evil wind mixed with hail came crashing down on him.

Fuck youuuuuuu Murphy!

It seems he really needs to go to a church to pray, ward off bad luck, and get some kind of trinket or holy water.

...

"Lie down, take off your pants."

"Um, I think it was my head that got hurt?"

"I know, take off your pants."

"Oh, okay."

"Who told you to take them all off? Just take them halfway down, exposing your butt is enough."

"Fuck... gentle, it hurts!"

"What are you yelling for? Is a shot really that bad?"

...

Carrying his medicine, Nick returned to his dormitory. With graduation approaching, many people had already moved out. Only those like him, who hadn't found jobs yet, were still lingering in the dorm, waiting for the final moment to arrive.

"Yo, Barney is back, you alright?" The fatass sitting at the desk playing a game greeted him as he walked in.

This black guy was named Tyler, but he jokingly called him Big Smoke, he was his roommate and classmate, as well as his best friend throughout these four years of college.

"Everyone has a fatass around them; if you don't, then you might be the fatass yourself."

It's the Golden Rule of college dorms, right next to "If it smells like old pizza, it's definitely under the bed."

Tyler is 6' tall and weighs 300 pounds. He doesn't just sit at his desk; he exerts a gravitational pull on the rest of the dorm.

;.

"It's fine, just a bit of broken skin." Nick replied, then climbed onto his bed and lay down. He just wanted to fall asleep early so this frustrating day could end sooner.

"Oh, that's good bro." Tyler refocused his eyes on the screen. As a best friend, he naturally understood Nick's current mood, so he didn't disturb him further.

With graduation approaching, for those of them who hadn't found jobs yet, the pressure was really high. These past few days, Nick had interviewed at several companies, but there was no news from any of them, so his mood was naturally very low.

Even unluckier was that when he went out today, he got caught in the hail. Not only did he fail to make it to the interview, but he also got hit on the head like this; anyone's mood would be terrible.

Lying on the bed, Nick looked at the ceiling, feeling a bit dazed. Ever since he was hit by the hail, he felt strange, but he couldn't pinpoint what was strange.

He always felt like something was pulsing inside his head, just like a heartbeat. When a person is calm, they can feel the pulsing of certain parts of their body. But this kind of pulsing inside his brain was something he was encountering for the first time.

Damn it, I didn't actually get my brain damaged, did I?

Accompanied by these wild thoughts, Nick finally fell asleep. However, he didn't sleep soundly, because he had a very strange dream.

He dreamt he was in the middle of a violent storm, with gale-force winds mixed with countless paper-like fragments flying towards him. Frightened, he hurriedly used his hands to block them, only to find these fragments drilling into his body and disappearing.

Immediately after, he entered a vast, empty space, boundless and without edges. In this space, countless light spots like fireflies were floating.

Feeling curious, he used his finger to touch a light spot nearby. The moment it touched him, the light spot quickly burrowed into his finger, and immediately he felt some things clearly appearing in his brain.

To be precise, these were pieces of information. This information was varied, incredibly numerous, and then fluttered in the air like butterflies.

When he focused his mind to try and see these data clearly, he was startled.

These pieces of information quickly gathered in front of him, then pieced together into a complete page of information.

"Research and Application of Drone Swarm-Array Control Technology"

Damn...

With a cry of surprise, Nick sat up from the bed.

"What's wrong with you man?" Tyler, looking at him with sleepy eyes from the opposite bed, asked.

"Nothing, nothing, just had a nightmare." Nick realized and hurriedly waved his hand.

"Ha... ah..."

Tyler yawned, then collapsed back down, mumbling: "I was just dreaming of a girl with D cups, and before I could even hug her, you woke me up. You have to compensate me..."

Hehe...

Nick chuckled, then lay back down, continuing to recall this strange dream he had just had.

Wait, something seems wrong.

Nick sat up again all of a sudden, his heart filled with shock. How could he remember those pieces of information from the dream so clearly?

How could he still remember the content of the material he saw in his dream?
