Chapter 44 - Drunk Jay

Keifer POV

It started exactly how I feared.

With chaos.

Jay suddenly stood up from the sand holding the wine bottle high in the air like some ancient warrior preparing for battle.

Her eyes narrowed dramatically at me.

"The fire demands sacrifice."

Oh no.

I immediately took a careful step back. "Jay—"

"A VIRGIN SACRIFICE!"

Then she pointed directly at me.

"HIM."

I gasped in betrayal. "Why always me?!"

Jay started running toward me at full speed while laughing like an evil little gremlin.

I panicked instantly and ran.

Absolutely ran.

"GET BACK HERE, YOU PURE BLOODED MAN!"

"THAT IS NOT A NORMAL SENTENCE, JAY!"

The bonfire crackled loudly while she chased me around it with shocking determination.

"You can't escape destiny!"

"I DON'T WANT THIS DESTINY!"

"I SHALL OFFER YOU TO THE FIRE FOR IMMORTALITY!"

"I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIE!"

I ran faster.

Unfortunately drunk Jay was horrifyingly athletic.

At one point she almost grabbed my hoodie and I genuinely saw my ancestors welcoming me into the afterlife.

Then suddenly—

"AH!"

Jay tripped over the sand near the fire.

I stopped immediately.

"Jay?!"

All panic vanished instantly as I rushed toward her.

"Are you hurt?!" I crouched beside her quickly. "Did you hit your head?"

Big mistake.

The second I leaned close—

Jay's hand shot out and grabbed my hoodie.

My eyes widened in horror.

"It was a trap."

Before I could react, she pulled me down with her onto the sand.

"JAY—"

She climbed halfway over me dramatically, pointing toward the bonfire like a villain in a fantasy movie.

"I SHALL SACRIFICE YOU, VIRGIN, FOR THE IMMORTALITY OF LIFE!"

I stared at her in absolute terror.

The firelight flickered behind her while her hair fell around her flushed face and honestly she looked both adorable and terrifying at the same time.

"P-please don't sacrifice me," I begged dramatically. "I'm too young for that."

Jay narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

"I haven't even married you yet!" I continued desperately. "We don't even have Watcher and Caretaker yet!"

Those were the names I secretly decided for our future kids during one sleep-deprived emotional breakdown.

Don't judge me.

Jay froze.

Slowly… very slowly… she looked down at me with an expression that immediately made my survival instincts scream.

Oh no.

That look meant an idea was forming.

And drunk Jay with ideas was humanity's greatest threat.

Then suddenly her lips curled into a teasing smile.

Her voice dropped softer this time.

"Well…" she leaned closer lazily, "then let's take away your virginity so I won't sacrifice you."

My brain stopped functioning.

Completely.

System failure.

I stared at her like she had personally unplugged my soul from my body.

"…what?"

Jay giggled softly at my horrified expression, clearly enjoying my suffering.

"You heard me, pretty boy."

I could physically feel my heartbeat losing control.

"J-Jay," I said weakly, trying very hard to remember how breathing worked.

Meanwhile she looked entirely too pleased with herself.

Dangerous.

Beautiful.

Evil.

Mostly evil.

Keifer POV

I was still frozen beneath her.

Completely frozen.

Meanwhile Jay looked very proud of herself.

"You're blushing," she whispered dramatically, poking my cheek. "Awww. My virgin is shy."

"My WHAT—"

She burst into laughter and nearly collapsed on top of me again.

"Oh my God your face!" she wheezed. "You look like I proposed marriage and murder together!"

"Because you basically did!"

Jay giggled uncontrollably while lying against my chest, completely unbothered by the chaos she was causing inside my nervous system.

The wine bottle was still loosely hanging from her hand.

Which honestly felt like a weapon now.

I carefully took it away before she decided to baptize me into fire rituals again.

"Heyyy," she whined dramatically. "Rude."

"You've had enough."

"You're no fun."

"I'm trying to survive the night."

Jay suddenly squinted at me suspiciously.

Then she grabbed my face with both hands.

I immediately stopped breathing.

"You're really pretty, you know that?"

"…Jay."

"No seriously." She leaned absurdly close to my face. "Like unfairly pretty. Sometimes I get angry looking at you."

I stared at her.

Because drunk Jay apparently had no filter whatsoever.

She continued confidently, "Your eyes are stupid pretty. Your voice is stupid pretty. Even your eyelashes make me mad."

"People aren't supposed to compliment eyelashes."

"Well yours exist aggressively."

I choked on my own breath.

Jay suddenly gasped loudly like she remembered something important.

"Oh my God."

"What?"

She pointed at me dramatically. "I used to stalk your old pictures."

Silence.

I blinked slowly. "You WHAT?"

She slapped a hand over her mouth too late.

Oops.

Then she started laughing uncontrollably again.

"I KNEW IT," I yelled dramatically. "YOU WERE OBSESSED WITH ME."

"No I wasn't!"

"You stalked my pictures!"

"That doesn't count!"

"That literally counts the most!"

Jay hid her burning face against my shoulder while laughing. "Okay maybe a little…"

"A little?"

"You looked hot in black hoodies okay?! Leave me alone!"

My ego ascended into heaven.

Jay suddenly lifted her head again, eyes glassy and soft from the alcohol and firelight.

"And your hands."

"…my hands?"

"They're attractive."

I stared at her in disbelief.

"You flirt more aggressively drunk."

She grinned lazily. "Because sober me has dignity."

"Drunk you is terrifying."

"Drunk me is honest."

That sentence hit me harder than expected.

Before I could even recover, Jay suddenly spoke again.

"And I kept your hoodie."

I blinked. "Which hoodie?"

"The black one."

"The one I searched for three months?!"

She nodded proudly.

"I sleep with it sometimes."

I genuinely stopped functioning again.

"Jay."

"It smelled like you."

"Jay."

"And when I missed you I hugged it—"

"JAY."

She burst into laughter seeing my completely destroyed expression.

"You're turning red again!" she accused happily.

"You're exposing classified information!"

"Well too bad." She poked my chest smugly. "Now you know I'm secretly obsessed with you."

"Secretly?" I repeated weakly. "You literally admitted to stalking me."

She smiled sleepily before resting her chin on my chest.

Then in the softest voice possible she mumbled,

"…I really love you though."

And just like that—

All the chaos inside me went quiet.

Keifer POV

Jay stayed curled against my chest for a few quiet seconds after saying she loved me.

And honestly?

I thought the chaos was over.

I was wrong.

Terribly wrong.

Because suddenly she lifted her head again, eyes half-lidded and dangerous.

Then her fingers slowly traced the collar of my hoodie.

"…You know," she mumbled thoughtfully, "you make it really hard to behave."

I blinked.

"What?"

Jay tilted her head innocently. "You sit there looking all pretty and boyfriend material and expect me to stay normal?"

I let out a short laugh under my breath. "Boyfriend material?"

"Mhm." She poked my chest lazily. "Very kissable too."

My ears instantly burned.

Jay noticed immediately.

"Oh my God." She gasped dramatically. "You blush so easily when I flirt back."

"You're drunk."

"And honest."

"That's what scares me."

She giggled softly before leaning closer again until I could feel her breath against my neck.

"You know what else is unfair?" she whispered.

I swallowed nervously. "What?"

"The way you hold my waist."

My brain malfunctioned immediately.

Jay continued shamelessly, "Like sir… are you trying to kill me?"

I covered my face for a second while laughing weakly. "Jay…"

"No seriously." She looked deeply offended now. "You just casually pull me close like it's normal and then expect me not to think things."

"What things exactly?"

Her grin turned mischievous instantly.

"Oh? So now you want details?"

I regretted speaking immediately.

Jay moved even closer until our noses almost touched.

"I think about kissing you a lot," she admitted casually.

My heartbeat betrayed me instantly.

"And sometimes," she continued dramatically, "I wonder if you know how attractive you sound when you whisper my name."

I actually choked.

Jay burst into laughter at my reaction.

"You're turning red again!"

"You're impossible."

"You love it."

Unfortunately…

She was correct.

Jay suddenly grabbed my jaw lightly, studying my face with drunk seriousness.

"You know what your problem is?"

"…what?"

"You act confident but you're secretly shy."

"I am not shy."

"You literally panic every time I flirt."

"Because you flirt like a criminal."

She looked proud of that.

Then suddenly her expression softened again.

"You looked really handsome when you got protective earlier," she admitted quietly. "When you thought I got hurt."

My laughter faded slightly.

Jay traced random patterns against my hoodie while mumbling softly, "Made me feel safe."

That hit directly in the chest.

Then of course—

Two seconds later she ruined the emotional moment completely.

"But also," she added thoughtfully, "your arms look very comfortable for sinful activities."

I stared at her in complete disbelief.

Jay started laughing so hard she nearly fell sideways into the sand again.

Meanwhile I sat there with my face burning while trying not to laugh too.

"You are actually insane," I muttered.

"And yet," she smirked proudly while poking my cheek, "you're obsessed with me."

…I really was.

Keifer POV

Before I could recover from her last comment, Jay suddenly shifted closer.

Then—

She climbed directly onto my lap.

My entire soul left my body.

"JAY."

"What?" she asked innocently, arms loosely wrapping around my neck. "The sand is uncomfortable."

"You are drunk."

"And you are warm."

Her hair smelled faintly like smoke and shampoo as the bonfire flickered beside us. Meanwhile I was trying very hard not to completely lose my mind.

Jay looked down at me with sleepy mischievous eyes.

"So…" she hummed softly, "about your virgin sacrifice problem."

"Oh no."

She nodded seriously like this was an important meeting topic. "I've been thinking."

"That sentence never ends well."

Jay ignored me completely. "If I take away your virginity, then technically the fire can't sacrifice you anymore."

I stared at her in horror.

"There it is," I whispered dramatically. "The worst solution imaginable."

She burst into laughter, nearly falling against my shoulder again.

"You should see your face!"

"My survival instincts are screaming."

Jay grinned lazily before tracing her finger down the front of my hoodie absentmindedly.

"You know…" she tilted her head, "for someone so pretty, you panic a lot."

"Because you keep saying insane things!"

"They're not insane." Her lips curled teasingly. "Maybe I'm just very motivated."

I covered my face briefly while laughing under my breath. "You're unbelievable."

"Mhm." She leaned closer. "But admit it… you like when I flirt."

I peeked at her through my fingers. "…maybe a little."

Jay gasped dramatically. "Confession accepted."

Then she suddenly looked thoughtful again.

"You know what else?"

"What now?"

"You act all dominant sometimes but if I whisper one thing in your ear you completely malfunction."

"That is slander."

Jay leaned right beside my ear anyway.

"Pretty boy," she whispered softly, "your ears turn red first."

I froze instantly.

And of course she noticed.

"Oh my God there it is!" she laughed victoriously. "See?!"

I couldn't even defend myself because unfortunately she was correct.

Jay kept smiling smugly before resting her forehead lightly against mine.

The teasing in her eyes softened a little.

"I like making you blush," she admitted quietly.

"…why?"

"Because usually you're the one making me nervous." Her fingers played with the back of my hair lazily. "So this feels like revenge."

I laughed softly this time, unable to stop myself.

Then Jay looked at me again with that dangerous drunk confidence.

"You know," she murmured teasingly, "if you keep looking at me like that, I might actually follow through on my plan."

My eyebrows lifted cautiously. "Which terrifying plan exactly?"

She smiled sweetly.

"The anti-sacrifice plan."

I groaned loudly while she dissolved into laughter against my shoulder again.

Keifer POV

Jay suddenly pulled away from my shoulder with a determined expression.

Oh no.

That look again.

The dangerous "I've made a decision" look.

She pointed at me dramatically while still sitting on my lap.

"I have chosen."

"…that sentence is terrifying."

Jay ignored me completely. "The anti-virgin sacrifice plan must happen."

I stared at her in disbelief. "You are still on that?!"

"Yes." She narrowed her eyes seriously. "Because if I don't take away your virginity, the fire will claim you."

"The fire has never said that."

"It whispered to me."

"The fire is literally wood."

Jay gasped dramatically. "Don't invalidate its feelings."

Then suddenly she stood up from my lap and pointed toward the bonfire like some fantasy queen declaring war.

"Choose,Mark Keifer Jay Waston!"

I blinked slowly. "What."

"Either…" she stepped closer mischievously, "you give me your virginity willingly."

I nearly choked.

"OR," she continued dramatically, "I sacrifice you for the immortality of life!"

Then she started chasing me around the bonfire again.

"JAY!"

"THE FIRE HUNGERS!"

"I AM A HUMAN BEING!"

"A VERY PRETTY HUMAN BEING!"

"That DOESN'T HELP!"

She kept laughing while trying to grab my hoodie.

"COME HERE, VIRGIN!"

"I HATE THIS TITLE!"

Eventually she cornered me near the wooden fence, both of us breathless from laughing too much.

Jay looked up at me with flushed cheeks and messy hair while the firelight danced across her face.

Then suddenly…

She grabbed my hoodie softly and pulled me down.

Her lips pressed against mine.

Warm.

Slow.

Sweet despite all the chaos.

For one second I kissed her back automatically.

Then reality hit me.

I gently pulled away first.

"Jay," I whispered softly.

She blinked up at me lazily. "What?"

"You're drunk."

"So?"

I sighed quietly, brushing some hair away from her face. "No, baby… you're drunk. You don't fully know what you're doing right now."

Her teasing expression faded slightly into confusion.

"But what about the sacrifice?" she asked seriously.

God.

I laughed softly under my breath.

"We'll talk about it tomorrow."

Jay narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "And then?"

"Then," I said carefully, smiling a little, "you can decide whether you want to sacrifice me… or my virginity."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Really?"

"Yeah." I kissed her forehead gently. "Totally your choice."

That finally seemed to satisfy her drunk little brain.

"Okay," she mumbled proudly. "Very fair deal."

I took her hand carefully before leading her back inside.

By the time we reached the room, she was already half asleep and mumbling nonsense about "protecting the fire kingdom."

I helped her lie down properly under the blankets.

Within minutes she fell asleep completely.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

Adorable.

I sat beside the bed for a while just watching her.

The same girl who could destroy my sanity in five minutes was now sleeping with slightly puffed cheeks and tangled hair across the pillow.

And somehow…

I loved every version of her.

The chaotic one.

The angry one.

The soft one.

Even the terrifying Barakuda version.

I brushed my thumb lightly against her hand before smiling to myself.

"You really ruined my life, sunshine," I whispered fondly.

Because before Jay, love felt simple in my head.

But with her?

It felt consuming.

Like wanting to protect someone even from themselves.

Like seeing a future automatically every time you looked at them.

Watcher and Caretaker.

I laughed quietly at myself.

Then I leaned down and kissed her forehead gently.

"Goodnight, future wife."
