The teacher asks us to turn in our assignments as the class ends. My legs faltered as I dragged myself to drop mine. I had waited until a lot of the others turned in theirs. If Calix was going to tell the teacher and humiliate me, it should not be in front of the little crowd. Mr Kowalski eyes scrutinized me from behind his huge glasses that are too much of a mismatch for his face.
"Did you do the assignment with your partner?"
"Yes." I respond in a flat tone. I am silently enraged that he is using the word "partner" which sounds a little intimate.
He should have just called his last name. He lets out a low hum that holds and an undertone of suspicion. "I'll have to confirm with him." My nerves and muscles locks on hearing that. He is looking past me.
"Lamont?" He calls out.
"Where is he?"
