Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Price of Respect

The leather seat of the Uber Lexus was cool against Tobi's skin, a stark contrast to the jagged metal and suffocating heat of his delivery bike. Outside the window, the neon lights of Lekki blurred into streaks of gold and red. For the first time in three years, Tobi wasn't looking at the road to calculate the fastest route for a ₦200 tip. He was looking at the world as a predator looks at a forest.

He checked his cracked phone one more time. The number hadn't changed. One million Naira. In Lagos, that was enough to change a man's name; in the eyes of the System, it was just the beginning.

[Time Remaining: 2 Hours 14 Minutes]

"We are here, boss," the driver said, pulling up to the grand entrance of The Palms Mall. The driver looked in the rearview mirror, his eyes lingering on Tobi's shredded green vest and the dried blood on his temple. "You... you sure you're okay? You want me to wait? I can stay here for another thirty minutes for a small fee."

Tobi caught his reflection in the tinted glass. He looked like a survivor of a war zone. But his eyes? His eyes were glowing with a cold, sharp confidence that didn't match his rags. He tapped his phone, sending a ₦5,000 tip notification to the driver's dashboard.

The driver's jaw dropped. "Thank you, sir! Hey! God bless you, sir! Anything you need, just call me!"

Tobi stepped out. He didn't slouch or try to hide his dirty clothes. He walked toward the massive glass doors with his head held high, the Lagos humidity thick against his skin. As he approached, two security guards in crisp khaki uniforms crossed their arms, blocking his path. One of them, a tall man with a scar across his brow, sneered as he looked Tobi up and down.

"Hey, no deliveries through the front door. Are you blind? Use the loading bay at the back with the other okada riders," the guard barked, his hand resting on his baton.

Tobi didn't stop. He walked until he was inches away from the guard, looking him straight in the eye. The Price-Tag Eye flickered, and blue text boxes hovered over the man's head.

[Current Thought: 'This dirty boy wants to come and steal. I'll break his legs if he tries.']

"I'm not here for a delivery," Tobi said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low rumble. "I'm here to spend money. Money that could buy your entire village's loyalty."

"With what? The sand in your pocket?" the other guard mocked, stepping forward. "Look at you. You smell like exhaust fumes and failure. Clear out before we use the baton and call the police for loitering."

A small crowd began to gather. Well-dressed shoppers paused to watch the "okada boy" get humiliated. Tobi felt the old, familiar sting of shame, the weight of a thousand insults he had swallowed over the years. But then he felt the hum of the System in his mind, a golden vibration that settled his nerves.

Ding.

[Notice: Authority Aura (Passive) partially triggered.]

Tobi pulled out his cracked phone and opened his Zenith Bank app. He didn't show them the balance—that was a secret for now—but he showed them the "Success" screen of a recent ₦150,000 transfer to a high-end hospital.

"I just paid more for a single hospital deposit than both of you earn in a year," Tobi said, his voice carrying across the lobby. "Move. Now. Or I'll buy this security firm tomorrow and ensure your first task is cleaning the gutters in Ajegunle."

The guard with the scar looked at the phone, then at the terrifying intensity in Tobi's gaze. Something had shifted in the air. Tobi didn't look like a victim anymore; he looked like a king in a beggar's cloak. The guard slowly, almost involuntarily, stepped aside.

Tobi walked past them into the air-conditioned bliss of the mall, heading straight for 'The Gentry', the most expensive men's boutique in Lagos. The scent of expensive cologne and imported leather hit him like a wave. A sales assistant named Kelvin was busy polishing a glass case containing watches that cost more than a duplex in Ikorodu. He looked up, saw Tobi's blood-stained vest, and his face twisted in pure, unadulterated disgust.

"Out," Kelvin said, not even looking away from the glass. "The staff entrance for cleaners and deliveries is in the basement. You're scaring the real customers."

"I want the charcoal grey Italian wool suit in the window," Tobi said, his fingers trailing over a display of silk ties.

Kelvin stopped polishing and walked over, stopping exactly three feet away to avoid the "smell" of poverty. "Listen, 'my friend.' That suit costs ₦450,000. Your entire life probably isn't worth ₦450,000. Don't touch the silk, you'll stain it with your grease and I'll have to pay for it."

Tobi looked at Kelvin. The Price-Tag Eye did its work.

[Target: Sales Assistant Kelvin]

[Vulnerability: He is three months behind on his rent. His girlfriend is threatening to leave him for a Yahoo boy.]

"You're behind on your rent, Kelvin," Tobi said, leaning against a marble pillar. "And your girl is tired of eating gala and lacasera. You really want to lose a ₦45,000 commission today just because you don't like my vest?"

Kelvin froze, the cloth falling from his hand. "How... how did you know that?"

"The suit. The silk shirt. The leather shoes. And the latest iPhone across the hall," Tobi listed, his voice cold. "Bring them all to the fitting room. If they fit, I'll pay double the tag price just to see you sweat while you bag them."

Kelvin was trembling now. The sheer confidence in Tobi's voice was suffocating. Desperation won over arrogance. "Right... right this way, sir. My apologies, I... I thought you were someone else."

Tobi spent the next hour in a trance of luxury. When he stepped out of the fitting room, the man in the mirror was a stranger. The charcoal suit hugged his shoulders like armor. The white silk shirt felt like a second skin, cool and expensive. He picked up a pair of black oxfords that the Price-Tag Eye valued at ₦120,000.

Next, he walked across to the tech store. The staff there had already heard rumors of the "Rich Delivery Boy" in The Gentry. They didn't even question his clothes. He bought the top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max, 1TB, in Titanium Black.

[Reward: ₦2,000,000 added to account.]

[New Skill Unlocked: Authority Aura (Active).]

[Current Balance: ₦2,804,500.00]

Tobi felt a strange warmth spreading through his veins. It wasn't just adrenaline; it was as if the System was physically reinforcing his muscles and sharpening his mind. He looked at his hands. The grease under his fingernails was gone, replaced by the clean look of someone who had never worked a day in his life.

[System Notification: Level 1 Progress: 150/500 EXP]

"Everything alright, sir?" Kelvin asked, bowing slightly. He was holding a glass of chilled sparkling water.

Tobi took a sip, the bubbles sharp and refreshing. "Everything is fine, Kelvin. Tell me, who owns that silver G-Wagon in the VIP slot downstairs?"

"Chief Alabi, sir. He's the landlord of half this mall. He's... a very powerful man."

Tobi tossed a ₦50,000 note onto the counter—a tip that was more than Kelvin's basic salary. "Keep the change. By the end of this month, I want a car that makes his look like a scrap heap. If he asks who I am, tell him I'm the man who is going to buy his mall."

As Tobi walked toward the exit, he passed a group of girls holding shopping bags from high-end makeup stores. Earlier, they wouldn't have looked in his direction. Now, he felt their eyes tracing the line of his Italian suit. One girl in a shimmering dress purposely slowed down as he passed. "Nice suit," she whispered with a wink.

Tobi didn't stop. He realized the System didn't just give him money; it gave him a shield against the world. However, as he reached the main doors, a familiar face appeared in the crowd. It was Segun, another delivery rider from his depot. Segun looked exhausted, holding a large pizza box, sweat dripping from his chin.

"Tobi?" Segun gasped, nearly dropping the pizza. "Is that you? People are saying you joined a cult! They say you did 'Yahoo' or 'Plus'! The police are at the depot looking for the rider who disappeared with the company bike!"

Tobi reached into his shopping bag and pulled out a stack of ₦1,000 notes—about ₦20,000 in total. He pressed them into Segun's hand.

"I didn't join a cult, Segun. I just stopped being a victim," Tobi said. "Take this. Fix your bike. Quit that job. Tell Okeke I'm coming for the keys to his office tomorrow."

Suddenly, his new phone buzzed. It was a restricted number. He answered. "Hello?"

"Tobi? It's Mr. Okeke," a voice screamed through the speaker. It was his old boss. "Where the hell are you?! You missed three deliveries! If that bike isn't back in ten minutes, I'm calling the police to arrest you for theft! You hear me, you useless boy?!"

Tobi clicked the Authority Aura to 'Active.'

"Mr. Okeke," Tobi said, his voice like rolling thunder. Shoppers nearby actually stepped back, feeling a sudden pressure in the air. "I'm at The Palms. If you want your bike, come and pick it up from the hospital parking lot. And bring my balance of ₦12,000 for last week's work."

"You... you dare talk to me like—"

"Actually, don't bother," Tobi interrupted. "I'm buying your company tomorrow morning. Keep the 12k. You're going to need it for your severance pay. Don't be late for our meeting."

Tobi hung up. He walked out, the sliding doors opening like he was royalty. The guards from earlier snapped to attention and saluted.

[New Quest: 'The Foundation of Empire']

[Objective: Acquire a physical business location or office space.]

[Reward: ₦10,000,000 + 'Logistics King' Title.]

Tobi smiled. A black Range Rover pulled up, the driver jumping out to open the door. Tobi climbed in. "The best hotel in Victoria Island," Tobi said. "I'm done with the mainland. It's time to live where the money stays."

As the car pulled away, Tobi opened a new menu on his screen that he hadn't noticed before.

[System Shop (Level 1) — Items Available:]

1. Instant Body Healing (Small): ₦500,000

2. Professional Driving Skill: ₦200,000

3. Truth Serum (1 Use): ₦1,000,000

"I'm going to need all of it," Tobi whispered as he looked out at the Lagos skyline. The hunt was on.
