CHAPTER 6
"Matthew," I said as I stood there with my mouth agape, as if I just saw a ghost and the ghost happened to be one that I thought I would never see again sitting in front of me in the flesh.
His eyes widened as he looked up, but that was temporary because he immediately replaced it with a smirk of someone up to no good.
Of course he didn't pull the seat out for me; still a jerk, some things just never change I thought to myself.
I could feel his eyes on me, analyzing every feature of my body as I pulled the seat out. I had definitely changed a lot since high school, and so had he.
His hair was dark and curly, just like in high school but now he had shaved the sides. I briefly scanned his tanned skin, a tattoo peeking from beneath his collar, he coughed, pulling me out of my temporary trance.
"You look… well," I muttered under my breath, trying not to make it so obvious that I was so shocked at how he looked even better than he did in high school, which was a weird thing for me to admit given that I hated his guts.
"You too." He chuckled, his deep voice echoing across the restaurant.
"What are you doing back" I asked, trying to act like this was normal.
"Uhm, I just finished my master's in Business administration at Cambridge and…."
"Okay, I can't do this anymore," I paused, taking in a deep breath "Did you know I was the one you were meeting today?" I asked.
"Of course not. I'm just as shocked as you are," he said, flattening his palms as he sat up on the table, the hair on his arms stood on end.
"It didn't look like you did a few seconds ago." I retorted
"I promise you I had no idea, my Mum set up the date." he replied
"Are you sure?" I pressed.
"Yes, I definitely wouldn't have agreed to go on a date with someone like you"
"What is that supposed to mean?" I asked as I balled my fists under the table.
"There are way more attractive women in this city." he said with a smug look on his face.
"This was a colossal waste of time." I said as I pulled my chair out as loud as I could.
"Fuck you" I said as I stomped out of the restaurant.
The universe must really have something against me, how do I even end up on a date with my highschool bully.
As much as I hate to admit it, it wasn't her fault, it's not like I told her anything about how I was being treated in school, even if I had she never listened to anything I said, it all went through one ear and came out the other.
I tried to stop a cab but it didn't look like there were any, unfortunately for me this was the rich part of town and only Ubers and people's cars were on the road. And I would rather walk the entire distance and have blisters on my feet than order an Uber
It was walking then, I said to myself as I took off my heels and started walking down the hill, hopefully I would see a cab that could take me to the nearest bus station. I decided to call my mother as I was going. She picked after three missed calls
Beep beep
I looked back ready to yell at the driver that was pressing his horn at me when I'm clearly on the pedestrian's walk but decided against it. I kept on working but the car kept honking at me as the person slowed down beside me.
"Do i know you?" I asked the woman as I stared at her with my jaw clenched as i held my shoes tightly ready to fling it at her and run incase she was a serial killer.
"It's me, Mary " she replied, like I was supposed to know who the fuck she was.
"Who?"
"Mary from highschool" she said, and then it clicked
"Biology lab partners" I asked
"Yes, oh my god its been ages," she said "Come on, get in."
She looked so different with her hair that used to be in a bob, now long and wavy flowing down her back and her babyish face now mature, a nose piercing tying the whole adult look together and she looked amazing.
"You look amazing, glad to see we all ticked off things from our bucket list." I chuckled
"You too, I see the tattoo, nice" she said as she pointed at my leg
"Yeah, I know right. What are you doing in this neighbourhood?" I asked
"Oh my husband and I live here" she said
"You're married?" I asked shocked
"Three years now, I still can't believe it" she paused, smiling as she looked at her wedding band "How about you, are you married?" she asked as I visibly shrunk into the carseat.
"I just got divorced actually." I said
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry" she said
"Don't be. He was a piece of shit" I said avoiding her eyes.
"Well enough of that, have you met anyone else from school recently"
"No, why?" I replied.
"Well apparently, Matthew is back in town and his name has been in the headlines nonstop for the past few weeks." she said as I tried to act like I didn't just have dinner with him.
"Matthew Maychild, why?" I asked faking my suprise.
"Apparently, his dad just died and he's going to take his place as the next CEO of their company" she said giggling like she was spilling the tea with her friends back in highschool.
I was basically invisible I didn't really get involved in school gossip.
"Oh, I've not really been going through the news lately but that's good for him I guess." I said
"What's your Instagram we should totally catch up." she said as she dropped me at the bus stop.
He's the heir to his dad's company so why the fuck did he agree to go on a date with me a divorced baker
