Chapter 25 - Trial of Stone

The training arenas of Terrava Academy were carved deep into the canyon wall.

Kael followed Aria down a broad stone stairway that spiraled along the inner face of the cliff until the corridor opened into a massive circular chamber.

The Stone Arena.

It was far larger than Kael expected.

The arena floor was a wide circular pit filled with packed earth and layered stone plates, surrounded by rising tiers of seating carved directly into the canyon wall. Students already filled several of the tiers, some watching ongoing matches while others discussed techniques or argued loudly about rankings.

At the center of the arena, two students faced each other.

One slammed his foot into the ground.

A ripple ran through the arena floor as a line of stone spikes erupted upward toward his opponent.

The second student reacted instantly, raising both hands.

A curved wall of stone rose from the ground and intercepted the attack, shattering the spikes into fragments.

The watching students cheered.

Kael slowed.

"People do this every day?"

Aria nodded.

"Sparring is part of advancement."

She gestured toward the arena floor.

"If you want to move up the ranking system, you need to prove you can control earth under pressure."

Kael watched as the two fighters reset their positions.

"Looks dangerous."

"It can be," Aria admitted.

"But the arena floor is reinforced."

She tapped one of the stone railings.

"The earth here is layered with resonance channels. Halvek designed most of them."

Before Kael could respond, a familiar voice echoed behind them.

"Well, look who finally made it to the arena."

Darius Tal walked down the stone steps toward them with a confident grin.

Two other students followed him.

Kael recognized neither of them.

The first was tall and lean, with sharp features and calm eyes that studied everything carefully.

The second was a woman with short dark hair and a posture that radiated quiet confidence.

Darius stopped a few steps away.

"Kael Holt," he said.

"The miner."

Kael folded his arms slightly.

"That seems to be my title now."

Darius smirked.

"You did dissolve an academy resonance stone."

The tall student stepped forward slightly.

"Rhen Calder."

His voice was calm, analytical.

"I've been curious to see you myself."

The woman beside him crossed her arms.

"Mira Voss."

Her gaze was direct.

"You're the one everyone's talking about."

Kael rubbed the back of his neck.

"That wasn't really my plan."

Mira snorted.

"No one's plan is to become interesting."

Darius gestured toward the arena floor.

"Well," he said casually.

"Since you're here…"

Kael already knew where this was going.

"You want a spar."

Darius grinned.

"Glad we understand each other."

Aria stepped forward slightly.

"He just arrived."

"And?"

"He hasn't even started training."

Darius shrugged.

"He lifted a stone in the Resonance Hall."

"That was a basic test."

"Exactly."

Darius looked back at Kael.

"So let's see if the miner can do anything when the ground starts fighting back."

Several nearby students had already begun paying attention.

Word spread quickly in Terrava Academy.

Especially when Darius Tal challenged someone.

Kael sighed quietly.

"You're not going to stop until I say yes."

"No."

Kael looked toward Aria.

She gave a small shrug.

"You might as well."

Kael stepped toward the arena entrance.

"Fine."

Darius grinned.

"Good."

---

The arena floor felt different beneath Kael's boots.

Denser.

The stone plates beneath the packed earth formed a controlled resonance field designed to prevent excessive damage during combat.

Still, Kael could feel the earth clearly.

Layers of stone beneath the arena.

Pressure lines.

Subtle fault seams running beneath the training floor.

Darius stepped into the opposite side of the circle.

Several students gathered along the arena edge.

Rhen and Mira stood beside Aria.

Mira leaned against the railing.

"This should be entertaining."

Rhen studied Kael quietly.

"He's calm."

"That doesn't mean he's good," Mira replied.

At the arena edge, a senior student raised a hand.

"First knockdown wins."

Darius cracked his knuckles.

"You ready?"

Kael nodded.

"Sure."

The signal came.

Darius moved first.

His foot slammed into the ground.

The arena floor trembled as a wave of stone rippled toward Kael.

Kael reacted instinctively.

The earth whispered beneath his feet.

He stepped sideways just before the stone ridge erupted upward where he had been standing.

Several students murmured.

Darius raised an eyebrow.

"Lucky."

He thrust both hands forward.

Three jagged stone spikes shot upward from the arena floor.

Kael stepped back again.

But this time he felt the attack before it happened.

The earth moved first.

He shifted his weight slightly.

The spikes erupted harmlessly beside him.

Darius frowned.

"You're quick."

Kael didn't answer.

He was concentrating.

The arena floor felt… responsive.

Too responsive.

He forced himself to stay careful.

Darius slammed both hands down.

The ground cracked.

A shockwave surged across the arena floor.

Kael felt it coming through the stone beneath his boots.

Instead of blocking the attack, he simply stepped aside again.

The shockwave passed.

Students in the stands began whispering.

"He's reading the ground."

"Impossible."

Darius's expression darkened.

"Stop dodging."

Kael shrugged.

"You're the one attacking."

Darius growled slightly and stomped forward.

The ground beneath Kael's feet shifted suddenly.

A ridge of stone rose upward.

Kael reacted instinctively.

Without thinking, he pushed gently against the earth beneath him.

The stone ridge moved.

Not much.

Just enough.

Darius stepped forward—

And the ground tilted beneath him.

His foot slipped.

Darius lost balance for half a second.

It was enough.

He hit the arena floor on one knee.

The senior student at the edge raised his hand.

"Match."

The arena fell quiet.

Darius stared at the ground in disbelief.

Mira straightened slightly.

"Well."

Rhen frowned thoughtfully.

"That shouldn't have happened."

Kael stepped back, trying not to look surprised himself.

He hadn't meant to do that.

The ground had simply… cooperated.

Darius stood slowly.

"You tilted the arena."

Kael shrugged.

"I moved."

Darius stared at him.

"You did something."

Kael met his gaze calmly.

"Guess I got lucky."

At the arena edge, Aria smiled slightly.

Above them on the upper balcony of the arena entrance, Professor Halvek stood watching silently.

His eyes were not on the students.

They were on the arena floor.

The stone plates had shifted.

Not just where Kael stood.

But across the entire arena.

As if the earth itself had leaned slightly in the boy's favor.

Halvek clasped his hands behind his back.

Interesting.
