Magic.
A system that comes from within. It's an eternal life force that every person is born with across the globe. Ones you'd hear in fantasy stories have shined into light that is almost as natural as breathing.
A prospect that connects the person's mind, soul and body can control such magic. The deeper the bond, the greater the potential and power one will bring.
Examples like ice magic where depending on your bond and genetically traits, it will impact the strength of your overall magical capabilities and how you train them.
How such force of magic works is awakened at young ages and recommended to academies to perfect their skills and abilities regulates in today's society.
However, there would be such rare exceptions in history that have shaped the world as we all know it today beyond human comprehension.
The Lawless Divisions!
This title belongs to the most exceptional beings in history that have shaped the society and world as we know it that were above the laws of this world.
Long ago when the world was created, magic was implemented to shape today's society upon creation from the beginning. God's blessing to humanity to expand the knowledge and limitless potential.
Due to the expansion of magic and magic users, the world was too small for the rapid expansion for the potential of magic. They needed a way to expand the horizons. Literally.
The sphere entirely made of water would soon be filled with land and heavily expand in size from its original form by such exceptional people over time.
However only 99 Lawless Divisons have ever been born throughout the billions upon billions of years Earth has been around. None have ever been birthed in over 10,000 years.
Only people will ever wonder when the next phenomenon will come once more into life, and most of all:
What will they do when they come?
***
It was a bright early morning. The sunrise has started to gleam through the windows. A bright orange sky started to rinse the previous night ceilings.
The birds began to chirp and people would soon wake up for another day for another tomorrow. What a peaceful morning to wake up to.
The room was simple to say the least.
White walls, decently sized room with a bed to the far right side that was furthest from the door.
The floor was covered in gray carpet all over the room with a closet in front of the bed.
The only thing occupying the rest of the space was just some weights to the left of the room accompanied by a small desk and couch after.
Painfully average.
"Mm…" a man rubs an eye and yawns before stretching an arm up above his head.
His crystal clear, light gray eyes swiftly glance at the clock.
5:39 am.
The man sighs and laid his head back on the pillows and snuggles in his blanket a bit more.
"I don't wanna go to university today. Let me rot in bed all day…" he murmurs to himself.
The door slams open.
"Dear brother! Guess what day it is today!"
A soft and mother-like voice came from the entrance of his room.
The woman looks at her brother who is still laying in bed despite waking up earlier.
She lets out a soft sigh before walking over and starts to tug the sheets off him to let the cool air force him to wake up.
"Wake up!"
The woman said with a casual smile as she tried tugging the blanket off of him.
The brother immediately retaliated and held the blanket firmly to keep himself cozy and warm.
"Let me rot… just a bit more…"
He tiredly murmurs his want to her as he was pretty casually keeping the blanket to humself.
Sigh.
"If you don't get up right now, I won't make you those chocolate pancakes." The girl teasingly threatens.
However this was not a joke either.
In under a second, the man sat up straight as if he was a newly programmed robot.
"I'm up."
A small amused smirk played on her lips and ran her fingers through her dark, black hair.
"You're 19 and you still act like such a big baby sometimes, Mayeda."
The woman shook her head a bit before walking out of his room to start making him breakfast.
Mayeda slides out of bed and goes in his closet to find his university uniform.
After a few minutes, he was finally ready and changed into it. It was his first day after all, so he made sure to try and give an impression the first day there.
A black tie in a black uniform jacket and a white button up shirt with black pants. Don't forget to mention that a small white "X" is marked on the uniform to symbolize which university he goes to.
A university that helps students learn more about magic and it's uses to help them become more skilled in their craft and learn what they want to do with their gifts in the world.
Mayeda walks out of his room and scratches the back of his head, ready to have some sweet, sweet chocolate pancakes.
As he made his way down the stairs, he sees his sister in a white apron with her black hair tied up in a ponytail, already starting to bake up some chocolate pancakes.
"Excited for the first day at university?" She casually asks without looking back.
"Not really." He sighed.
A thin line forms on her lips.
"Of course not." She sighs as well but has a small smile afterwards.
The kitchen was painted in mostly white, the tiled floor was black and white with the countertops being a gray marbled surface.
He takes a seat in the high gray chair and watches her make them some pancakes.
"You know, I almost feel like I'm in school again on mornings like these, Yoshikawa." He says with a small smile, glancing around the kitchen.
Yoshikawa turns around for a moment to look back at her younger brother.
"You mean being woken up by your beautiful and caring older sister who makes you breakfast every morning?" She says in a sing-a-song voice, clearly in a good mood.
Mayeda sighs with an amused expression.
"I mean, I have a sister but I don't remember us having another one who's beautiful." He dryly said.
Pinch
She bent over the counter and began to pinch his cheek, swatting his face around.
"What did you just say to me?" She asks, more like a demand though as a small pout forms from his comment.
"I'm kidding! Just kidding!" He quickly stammers and tries to lean back to get her to let go.
Her pinch on his cheek only increased.
"Are you sure?" She asked.
Mayeda nodded quickly.
"Are you really sure?" She asked again.
Mayeda quickly nodded again.
…
"Are you really really sure?" She asked once more.
Mayeda grew a bit irritated by this banter before sniffing the air.
Uh oh.
He lightly poked her shoulder and points behind her.
The darkening smoke came from the pan.
The pancakes were being burnt.
A small fire starts to form on the pan before it grew tenfolds.
Panic rises.
"Oh no!" She panicked before she lets go of his cheek .
Without hesitation, she shoots multiple lines of water from her finger tips at the pan.
Tssssst
A good bit of smoke comes from the pan after clearing out the fire.
When the smoke disperses, the pancakes were now wet and clearly almost blackened all over.
Mayeda walks around the counter and looks down and looks back at her in silence.
Yoshikawa looks down at the pan and looks back at him in silence as well.
…
His sister clearly feels a bit embarrassed and guilty about this now. Messing up the pancakes on quite an important day.
What a silly sibling of mine.
He thinks about it and stares at the pan, especially the soggy burnt pancake.
Sigh.
Mayeda casually takes the soggy but burnt pancake from the pan and puts it in his mouth.
!?
Yoshikawa is stunned and panics from such a randomly, stupid decision.
"H-hey! Don't eat that!" She was worried and began to pat his chest to coax him in spitting it out.
"This is fine," Mayeda says with a full mouth.
His sister paused and just looks up at him from his sudden words.
"Huh?" She was puzzled yet confused.
"I can still eat the pancakes just fine, so don't worry so much, sis" He tries to act nonchalant and shrug it like it was no big deal.
He gave a small smile.
Yoshikawa paused.
After a moment, she had an endearing smile twice as big.
From feeling super touched of her brother's love, she tried to go in for a loving hug.
But…
Mayeda quickly leans over the sink and throws up the pancakes from his mouth.
Her endearing smile quickly erased into a shocked expression.
"Nevermind! I lied! Help!" He blurts out over the sink and quickly turns on the water to rinse the puke off in the sink.
"Goodness, why the hell did I do that?" He complains a bit, blaming himself for trying to look cool at the moment before.
Yoshikawa panics and glances around, not knowing what to do right now until she started to slap his back and poke him constantly with a small whine.
"I TOLD YOU TO NOT EAT THAT!"
She whines a little and tries to keep slapping his back to help get it all out.
***
After eating breakfast, not, and leaving the apartment, he went off to walk to his university.
He walks down the steps of the stairs.
God… my stomach still hurts a bit…
He glances over at the sky. The sun was still rising a bit yet it was still so beautiful over the horizon.
Well it's a good thing the weather is still nice.
He slicks his black bangs back.
This sucks. Why did I choose to have early classes again?
He walks all the way down the stairs and now began to walk on the smooth sidewalk while silently thinking to himself.
Oh yeah… it was to try and start getting up early for once.
He had a super bad habit of staying up late and waking up around the afternoon, so after thinking about it, and the scolding of his older sister, he chose the earliest classes of magic he could get to try and fix himself out of his room.
I regret trying to change.
He sunk his head down with a tired face before rising it back up while he walks to avoid an upcoming bicyclist to the side.
A coin drops.
He spots a coin on the ground and looks back to try and tell them but the bicyclist was already gone into the alleyway he just passed by a block away.
He stops in front of the coin and kneels down a bit to see what side it was facing.
Oh! It's facing heads!
He beams a bit and doesn't think twice before taking the coin.
"Heads means good luck! So that means today is gonna be quite lucky for me." He mumbles to himself before tucking it in his pocket.
Yes. He was quite superstitious of some stupid stuff too.
He tries to begin walking again until he felt a hard tug from his pocket.
Huh?
He glances down and noticed that he wasn't budging from the exact same position he was in.
Tugging again, same result happens.
He can't move!
Huh. That's odd.
He pauses and thinks for a second.
There was something poking from his pocket.
His eyes widen.
It was the co-
WHOOSH!
Suddenly his body flew backwards meters from where he was and zooming backwards to the alleyway.
His eyes widened to where he was flying towards and quickly tried to dig in his pockets to get the coin out of there but it won't budge!
He was definitely not gonna take his pants off in public… it might be public indecency!
In a last resort, he takes the bag that he was gonna take to university today and threw it as hard as he could to the side.
Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his stomach before he could think any further and fell onto the ground.
Thud
Hitting back first into the concrete at such a sharp spot.
"Ow!" He lets out from such a sharp pain before a foot stomps onto his chest.
He gazes up.
It was a man.
No.
Six men to be exact, including the man that was in front of him.
With such grins on their faces that it makes the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" a total lie!
They were thugs.
Damn it…
Mayeda's teeth grits a bit.
From the corner of his eye, he can see the bike he walked past by earlier resting to the side of the wall.
It was a setup.
The coin he had originally picked up snakes its way out of his pocket and into the hands of the man standing on him, resting in his palm.
So he must've been the one who manipulated the coin to fly me over here…
Like a fish falling for a fishing hook…
If he could sigh, he would, but he can't from this position.
Is his magic able to manipulate copper? That coin was made in 1832.
Due to that date of time, coins were made up of 100% of copper.
It's either the ability to manipulate copper or coins in general or maybe just straight up telekinesis-like magic!
"Give us your money, kid." The man demands with a sneer, pressing his foot harder into his chest against the concrete.
He was surrounded by him and five other men in this small alleyway, only darkness and shadows of buildings shields them from the sun at this angle.
Mayeda grins a little as he looks up.
"Well maybe if you asked me nicely fir-"
Snap
One of his ribs broke which caused him to fall on his words.
"I'm not in the mood for games, boy. Do you really think you're in any predicament right now to do so?" The man gets angrier before waving his hand.
Two of the men to his side immediately close in on Mayeda and began to shake and pat him down by force.
Mayeda tries to squirm a little but resistance was futile really.
The silence was loud other than the sounds of rummaging through his clothes, dropping his keys and phone to the ground.
The hands digging in his uniform and pockets eventually found his wallet.
"Lucky us. He had his wallet on him." One of the men exclaim with a mean smile and hands it to the man who was still on top of Mayeda.
"Once we collect our money, we'll let your sorry ass go. We didn't come here with the intent to get our hands dirty." The man stated with a condescending tone.
And finally without much hesitation, he opens the wallet.
Within it was-
Nothing.
No money.
Just some coupons and a star sticker.
Silence falls upon everyone.
Mayeda just laid there with an expressionless gaze.
Yeah, he had no money on him either.
"You know…"
Mayeda lets out a sharp sigh.
"I'm struggling too right now." He stated.
Mayeda smiles.
"Well not as much as you guys of course." He added in for fun.
The foot that was on his chest slowly began to lift off his chest.
"Finally letting me go now?" Mayeda finally began to breathe a bit normally.
WHACK!
Another sharp pain connects with Mayeda but in directly in the face this time.
It was a rough kick to the face, one that seems like it wasn't holding anything back on him.
Splat!
A bit of blood spilled onto the smooth and gray concrete floor.
Mayeda's eyes widen from the sudden attack before he was met with more.
Whack!
Pow!
Smack!
Just a shower of violence sprayed upon him and it looked like it hurt.
After a few more minutes of nothing but violent action, they stepped away to now look at the scene before them.
Mayeda laid there, bones broken and blood all around his body. It was something out of a gore video that most definitely would've killed him.
Yet he twitches slightly.
The man, who was still enraged, tries to calm his fist before calling for something.
Heavy electrical copper cables hovering above him.
It must've been from a nearby construction site…
"You really think you can just make us look like damn fools for your entertainment and mock us for it?!" He exclaims with a harsh tone before dropping one of the cables onto his already broken leg.
Crack!
Mayeda jolts his head back with a grunt of pain.
Then another one fell on his other broken leg.
Crack!
Another and another on his arms until he was practically shattered on almost every bone, except for the chest and skull of course.
"Can you even speak your last words, boy?" The man looks down at him.
"Because even if you don't have any money right now, we're sure your body will." A murderous grin appears beneath that black mask.
The rest of the men with an identical look, a black mask and black overall robes looked ready for dismemberment.
It was clear for another thing.
This now just wasn't about the money.
Now, it was about the enjoyment of this all. A sad reality that resided within them.
One that Mayeda could clearly see now. Closing an eye before opening slightly again, his eye shone a little despite no lighting nearby.
Mayeda barely gets out a breath.
"I wonder… if you've ever felt this sort of pain before…" he weakly says, only able to see in one eye since the other was torn out of his face.
The heavy copper cable grew tenfold in size, hovering just directly above his head before sending down on him.
Mayeda closed his eyes.
"I guess not."
The moment the cable copper made contact with his head.
CRACK!
A loud crack.
No.
Countless loud cracks snapped at once.
However, it wasn't for him.
All of the men suddenly began to feel immense pain and sprawl down onto the ground in intense agony.
It almost felt like their entire bodies were broken and shattered too.
What was this?
Mayeda stood up in silence and dusts his clothes off.
The man looks up at him with widened eyes.
This boy… is completely fine now!?
Mayeda's crystal clear, light gray eyes peered down at all of them.
Grunts and screams of pain now filled the silence in this space.
The pain hitting them all at once with no buildup. Was this his doing?
"Y-you bastard… what did you do?!" The man demands with blood dripping down the corner of his mouth.
Mayeda kneels down in front of him and yanks the black mask right off of him.
It reveals a rough looking man who appears in his fifties, a beard turning gray with blond hair and blue eyes.
Mayeda tilts his head from this view.
"On the bright side, I can see why you're struggling on finances by just looking at you alone." He commented with a smile.
This enraged the man even more and tries to throw a swing at Mayeda but the pain was too great to do so.
No, more like his arm was too broken enough to even attempt so.
The other men were desperately trying to wiggle away in agony, some couldn't even move and just laid there with tears.
One of the men even tried to use recovery magic on themselves, but the injuries were too severe to prevent any longer.
"W-what did you do?" The man demanded an answer, looking up at Mayeda.
Mayeda taps his chin and thinks in silence before responding.
"I didn't do a thing. You did this to yourselves." He answered and turns away.
The man's fist clenched.
"Don't bullshit me! What are you talking about?" He demanded again, this pain was far too great for just some normal magic.
Heck, he didn't even know what could cause this anyways.
Mayeda glanced back with a small shrug.
"You tell me." He simply finished off before he picks up his phone, keys and empty wallet.
Huh?!
Mayeda began to walk out the alleyway and casually picks up his small bag before walking back on the sidewalk.
"You don't even plan to finish us off?" The man commented with an enraged expression.
"Just like what you said too, I also don't intend to get my hands dirty." Mayeda brushed off before giving a final glance back.
"Well, that was what you said before." He adds.
"Y-you… get back here!" The man shouts out one last time.
He ignores it and just continued on like nothing ever happened.
Silence follows him once more with his thoughts once more on his way to a new chapter in his life.
